Solved: Is the Ryzen 5 5600 and RX 6600 a Good Pair on a PCIe 3.0 Motherboard?

The Ryzen 5 5600 and RX 6600 work well together on a PCIe 3.0 motherboard. The RX 6600 will normally run at PCIe 3.0 ×8, with a small, workload-dependent performance penalty.

Yes. The Ryzen 5 5600 and Radeon RX 6600 are a sensible, well-balanced combination for mainstream 1080p gaming, even when the motherboard only supports PCIe 3.0. The main limitation is that the RX 6600 uses a PCIe 4.0 ×8 interface, so on a PCIe 3.0 board it will normally run at PCIe 3.0 ×8. That can reduce performance in some workloads, but it is generally a modest, game-dependent penalty—not a reason by itself to replace a working motherboard.

Why the Ryzen 5 5600 and RX 6600 make sense together

The Ryzen 5 5600 is a six-core, 12-thread Zen 3 processor for the AM4 socket. It has a 65 W default TDP, a base clock of 3.5 GHz and boost clocks of up to 4.4 GHz. The RX 6600 is aimed primarily at 1080p gaming and includes 8 GB of GDDR6 memory. Those performance levels complement each other well.

At higher visual settings, the RX 6600 will commonly be the limiting component. The Ryzen 5 5600 is nevertheless fast enough to support high frame rates in many games. A CPU limit can still appear in esports titles, simulation games, large multiplayer games, or when targeting 144 Hz and higher refresh rates. “Bottleneck” is not a permanent property of a parts list: the limit changes with the game, resolution, settings and frame-rate target.

In practical terms, this is a balanced mainstream 1080p pairing rather than an excessive CPU matched with a weak graphics card.

What happens on a PCIe 3.0 motherboard?

PCIe devices are backward compatible. During startup, the graphics card and motherboard negotiate the fastest PCIe generation and lane width that both support.

  • The RX 6600 supports PCIe 4.0 ×8.
  • A B350 motherboard such as the MSI B350M Mortar provides a primary PCIe 3.0 ×16 slot when used with a Ryzen processor.
  • The RX 6600 uses eight lanes, so the expected negotiated connection is PCIe 3.0 ×8.

The card will remain fully functional: PCIe 4.0 is not required for it to display an image or run games. AMD lists the RX 6600 as a PCIe 4.0 ×8 card on its official product page.

Connection Approximate one-way bandwidth
PCIe 3.0 ×8 7.9 GB/s
PCIe 4.0 ×8 15.8 GB/s
PCIe 3.0 ×16 15.8 GB/s

PCIe 3.0 ×8 therefore offers roughly half the link bandwidth of PCIe 4.0 ×8. However, that does not mean games automatically lose half their frame rate. The GPU usually renders from its own VRAM, and games do not continuously saturate the PCIe link.

How much performance does PCIe 3.0 cost?

The honest answer is: usually a small amount in ordinary 1080p gaming, with larger effects possible in particular workloads. Results vary with the game engine, texture streaming, driver behavior, resolution, system memory and whether the card is already close to its 8 GB VRAM limit.

Testing of Navi 23 graphics cards has found that their PCIe 4.0 ×8 connection can be hindered somewhat on an older PCIe platform. Tom’s Hardware discusses this behavior in its RX 6600 review and test-setup coverage. The result is workload-dependent, so it should not be converted into a universal claim such as “the loss is exactly 2%” or “the loss is always 10%.”

Some games may show almost no measurable difference, while a title that streams substantial data over PCIe can show a more visible gap. The original Tom’s Hardware forum discussion also reported a generally negligible difference in most games but a larger result in Forza. That observation is useful as a practical example, not as a controlled universal benchmark.

  • For the advanced Socket AM4 platform, can support PCIe 4.0 on X570 and B550 motherboards

For an RX 6600 used mainly at 1080p, the sensible conclusion is that PCIe 3.0 ×8 is a limitation worth understanding, but not normally a deal-breaker.

Is a B350 motherboard compatible with the Ryzen 5 5600?

AMD lists B350 among the chipsets supporting the Ryzen 5 5600. That is chipset-level support, not a guarantee that every B350 motherboard will boot the processor. The individual board manufacturer must provide a BIOS containing the required CPU and AGESA support.

For the MSI B350M Mortar specifically, MSI’s official specifications list a primary PCIe 3.0 ×16 slot for Ryzen processors. Before buying or installing the CPU, check MSI’s CPU-support list for the exact model name and board revision. “B350 Mortar” and “B350M Mortar” should not be treated as interchangeable.

BIOS checklist before replacing the CPU

  1. Read the exact motherboard model and revision from the PCB, manual or original box.
  2. Open the manufacturer’s CPU-support page and find the Ryzen 5 5600 entry.
  3. Note the minimum BIOS version required.
  4. Update the BIOS while the currently working CPU is still installed.
  5. Use only the manufacturer’s prescribed BIOS file and flashing utility.
  6. Do not interrupt power during the update.
  7. After the update, load optimized or default settings, then reconfigure memory and fan settings.
  8. Install the Ryzen 5 5600 and confirm that it is detected correctly.

Some older boards cannot update without a currently supported processor if they lack a BIOS Flashback feature. Common mistakes include flashing firmware for a similar model, skipping a required intermediate BIOS, or attempting the update after removing the only CPU that can boot the board.

The Ryzen 5 5600 also has no integrated graphics. AMD specifies that a discrete graphics card is required. Connect the monitor to the RX 6600, not to video outputs on the motherboard.

Install the RX 6600 in the correct slot

Use the motherboard’s primary full-length PCIe slot. On the B350M Mortar, that is the PCIe 3.0 ×16 slot connected to the Ryzen processor. A secondary slot may be electrically limited or share lanes differently, which can create a much more significant performance problem than the normal PCIe 3.0 fallback.

After installing the card, verify the active link with a hardware-information utility such as GPU-Z or HWiNFO. A normal result may be shown in a form similar to:

PCIe 4.0 ×8 @ PCIe 3.0 ×8

The first part describes the card’s maximum capability; the second describes the link currently negotiated with the motherboard. At idle, power-saving behavior may display a reduced speed. Check again while the GPU is under load.

If the link reports ×4 or ×1 under load, check the slot, reseat the card, inspect the motherboard BIOS settings and examine the CPU socket for damaged pins. Lane-sharing behavior and physical seating can also matter.

Other setup checks that matter

Power supply

The reference RX 6600 specification uses one 8-pin auxiliary power connector. Board-partner models can differ, so check the exact card. Use a healthy, reputable PSU with a native PCIe power connector, adequate airflow and enough capacity for the complete system. A nominal “600 W” label does not make a generic or very old unit safe; conversely, a good lower-wattage unit may be sufficient for a modest RX 6600 system.

Memory

Use two matched DIMMs in the motherboard’s recommended dual-channel slots. Single-channel memory can reduce CPU-side gaming performance and make a PCIe issue appear worse than it is. The B350M Mortar has four DDR4 slots and supports dual-channel memory according to MSI’s specifications.

AMD’s official specification for the Ryzen 5 5600 lists DDR4-3200 as the supported memory speed. Faster settings are overclocking and depend on the particular memory kit, motherboard BIOS and processor; DDR4-3600 should not be assumed to work reliably on every early B350 board.

Drivers and thermals

Install current chipset and Radeon drivers from AMD or the motherboard manufacturer, then check GPU and CPU temperatures, clocks and fan behavior. Stuttering is not automatically caused by PCIe bandwidth: unstable RAM, shader compilation, thermal throttling, background processes, storage delays and frame-pacing problems can produce similar symptoms.

Should you enable Smart Access Memory?

Smart Access Memory is AMD’s branding for Resizable BAR. It is optional and is not required for compatibility. It can improve performance in some games, but gains are not guaranteed and vary by title.

Support depends on the motherboard BIOS, CPU platform, graphics-card firmware and operating-system configuration. Common requirements include:

  • UEFI boot mode.
  • Legacy CSM disabled.
  • Above 4G Decoding enabled.
  • Re-Size BAR or Smart Access Memory enabled, where the BIOS exposes those options.

Menu names and locations differ between MSI BIOS versions. A PCIe 3.0 motherboard may support Resizable BAR; PCIe 4.0 is not automatically required. If enabling it causes instability or a particular game performs worse, compare the same game with the feature disabled.

Do not expect a guaranteed percentage improvement across all games.

When is a B550 upgrade worthwhile?

Keep the PCIe 3.0 motherboard when it is reliable, supports the Ryzen 5 5600 with an available BIOS, has a suitable primary slot, provides adequate memory capacity and offers the connectivity you need. For a 1080p RX 6600 system, upgrading solely to obtain PCIe 4.0 is usually poor value.

  • For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, can support PCIe 5.0 on select motherboards
  • Cooler not included

A B550 motherboard becomes more reasonable when:

  • The B350 board cannot support the 5600 or updating it is impractical.
  • You also want PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage.
  • You plan to use a substantially stronger future graphics card.
  • The existing board has weak firmware support, inadequate VRM cooling or insufficient I/O.
  • You are buying a complete new platform and the price difference is small.

B550 provides a newer platform and broader expansion options, but it will not make the RX 6600 dramatically faster by itself.

Troubleshooting common problems

The system does not boot after the CPU upgrade

Reinstall the previous CPU if possible, confirm that the BIOS version meets MSI’s requirement, clear CMOS and check that the memory is seated correctly. If the old CPU is unavailable and the board lacks BIOS Flashback, a repair shop or compatible processor may be needed to perform the update.

There is no display

Connect the monitor to the RX 6600. The Ryzen 5 5600 has no integrated GPU. Also check the card’s auxiliary power connector, monitor input and PCIe seating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The link shows PCIe ×4 or ×1

Move the card to the primary slot, reseat it and inspect the slot and CPU socket. Check BIOS PCIe settings and test again under load. A normal PCIe 3.0 motherboard result for this card is typically ×8, not ×4 or ×1.

Games stutter

Confirm dual-channel memory and stability, update chipset and graphics drivers, monitor temperatures and clocks, and investigate shader compilation, background applications, storage and frame pacing before blaming PCIe.

Resizable BAR is missing

Update the motherboard BIOS if appropriate, use UEFI boot mode, disable CSM and look for Above 4G Decoding and Re-Size BAR. Older BIOS versions may not expose the feature, and availability varies by board.

Final recommendation

Use the Ryzen 5 5600 and RX 6600 together. On a compatible PCIe 3.0 motherboard, the card will normally operate at PCIe 3.0 ×8 and may lose some performance in bandwidth-sensitive games, but the system remains a sensible 1080p gaming setup. Update the BIOS before changing CPUs, use the primary PCIe slot, connect the required 8-pin power cable, run dual-channel memory and verify the negotiated link under load. Replace the motherboard only when it solves a separate compatibility, feature or future-upgrade problem.
