Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA Windows 7 blue screen (BSOD) is a STOP error: Windows has detected a serious hardware, driver, or software problem and shuts down or restarts to protect data. The reliable way to troubleshoot it is to record the complete STOP code, prevent automatic restart, test in Safe Mode, check hardware and logs, repair system files, and then roll back a recent change. If Windows will not start, use the F8 recovery menu or a Windows 7 repair disc.
What a Windows 7 BSOD means
Microsoft also calls a blue screen a bug check, STOP-code error, or kernel error. It is a protective shutdown, not a diagnosis by itself. The screen may show a hexadecimal code such as 0x0000007E, four parameters, and sometimes a file or driver name. Treat those details as evidence: the same code can have different causes on different computers.

A crash can be triggered by newly installed hardware, a defective memory module, a damaged system file, an incompatible driver, or software that operates at a low level. Do not assume that a named file is automatically the root cause; use it with the timing of your changes, Safe Mode results, and event logs.

Before troubleshooting: protect evidence and data
Repeated crashes can corrupt files that were open when Windows stopped. If the computer remains usable for a few minutes, save work and copy irreplaceable documents, photos, browser bookmarks, and business files to an external drive or another trusted location. Do not delete dump files, clear event logs, or reinstall Windows before recording what happened. A technician can learn much more from the original STOP screen, a dump, and the sequence of recent changes than from a clean installation performed afterward.

Disconnect nonessential peripherals such as printers, external drives, docks, cameras, and USB hubs while diagnosing. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and the hardware required to boot. Disconnecting one item at a time is safer than removing everything at once because it preserves a useful test history.
First, capture the error and stop the reboot loop
Record the complete STOP information
- Photograph or write down the full STOP code, all parameters, and any “caused by” module name.
- Note what happened immediately before the crash: a driver installation, Windows update, new USB device, memory upgrade, game, or other program.
- If the computer restarts before you can read the screen, restart and repeatedly press F8 before the Windows logo appears.
- On Advanced Boot Options, select Disable automatic restart on system failure. Windows will leave the blue screen visible so you can record it.
Keep the code with your notes. A partial code such as “0x7E” is less useful than the complete display, including parameters and the module name. Also record whether the crash happens during startup, when Windows resumes from sleep, while gaming, when copying files, or only after the computer has been running for a while. A reproducible trigger helps separate a driver or service problem from an intermittent hardware fault.
Choose the right troubleshooting path
| What you observe | Best next action | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Windows reaches the desktop and crashes during normal use | Capture the code, then test Safe Mode and inspect recent drivers, services, and hardware. | A normal-mode-only crash usually points toward a component that Safe Mode does not load. |
| The crash disappears in Safe Mode | Roll back or uninstall a recently changed driver or startup component; check Device Manager for warning icons. | Basic Windows files and drivers work, so investigate additions loaded only in normal mode. |
| The crash started after an update, driver, or program installation | Use System Restore to choose a restore point from before that change. | System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs while leaving personal files intact. |
| A new card, USB device, memory module, or other hardware was added | Power off, remove the new hardware, and test again. | If stability returns, the new component, its driver, or its installation is a prime suspect. |
| Windows cannot reach the desktop | Use F8, select Repair your computer, and open System Recovery Options. | Startup Repair addresses boot problems; System Restore addresses a recent system change. |
This comparison also helps choose the least destructive option. If Windows still reaches the desktop, back up files and use reversible driver or restore-point changes first. If the crash disappears in Safe Mode, do not begin by replacing hardware or reinstalling Windows. If it occurs in every mode, prioritize memory, system-file, storage, and motherboard checks. If no restore point exists, proceed with the diagnostic evidence rather than assuming a reset is the only answer.
Manual fixes, in order
1. Undo the most recent physical change
Shut down completely and disconnect a newly added USB device. If you installed a PCI card, graphics card, or memory module, power off, unplug the computer, and remove or reseat the component according to the hardware maker’s instructions. Reconnect only essential devices and test Windows. Do not open a powered computer, and do not remove a component if doing so could damage it or void a warranty.
Use the same ports and cables that previously worked when possible. A damaged cable, loose memory contact, or underpowered hub can look like a driver failure. If removing the new part stops the BSOD, leave it disconnected while you obtain a compatible driver or have the component tested. Reinstalling it repeatedly without changing anything does not provide new evidence.
2. Start Windows 7 in Safe Mode
- Restart and tap F8 before the Windows logo.
- Choose Safe Mode and sign in.
- Use the computer long enough to see whether the BSOD returns.
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers. If it is stable there, open Device Manager (Control Panel > System and Security > System > Device Manager) and look for yellow warning icons. For a device changed just before the crashes, open its properties and use Roll Back Driver when available; otherwise uninstall the device or its driver, restart, and install a known-compatible release from the device manufacturer. Also check startup programs and recently installed services. Remove one change at a time so you know which action affected stability.

If the BSOD occurs even in Safe Mode, a basic driver, system file, memory problem, or hardware fault becomes more likely. Continue with the diagnostic steps below rather than repeatedly reinstalling normal-mode software. Safe Mode is a diagnostic comparison, not a permanent operating mode; some network, graphics, and security functions will be unavailable.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →3. Review Event Viewer around the crash
- Boot normally or in Safe Mode.
- Open Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs and select System.
- Look at critical and error events immediately before the restart. Record the source, event ID, time, and device or service named.
Event Viewer can show a failing service, storage error, or driver event that occurred just before the bug check. It may not identify the root cause, so compare its timing with the STOP code and your recent changes. Do not treat every warning logged during boot as proof of failure; focus on events that repeat at the crash time or identify the same device. The unexpected-shutdown entry often confirms that Windows restarted, but it normally does not explain why.
4. Test the memory
Run Windows Memory Diagnostic from Windows or from the recovery environment and choose the option to restart and check for problems. After the test, open Event Viewer, go to Windows Logs > System, and find the MemoryDiagnostics-Results entry. Record any reported errors. A memory error can produce different STOP codes from one crash to the next; if errors appear, test modules individually or have the memory and motherboard checked before continuing to use the system.
Run the test more than once only if a technician recommends it; changing modules, slots, or memory settings is more informative than endlessly repeating an unchanged test. If the machine has recently received a memory upgrade, remove the new module and test the original configuration first. A clean diagnostic result does not prove that memory, the memory controller, or the motherboard is perfect, but an error is a strong reason to stop troubleshooting software until the hardware is addressed.
5. Repair protected Windows files with System File Checker
- Start Windows normally or in Safe Mode.
- Open the Start menu, type
cmd, right-click cmd.exe, and choose Run as administrator. - At the elevated prompt, run
sfc /scannowand wait for verification to reach 100 percent. - Read the final message. Restart and test again; keep the result if you need further help.
System File Checker checks for missing or corrupted protected system files and repairs files it can replace. If it reports that it could not fix some files, do not treat the BSOD as solved; preserve the message and continue with System Restore or recovery options. Close other programs while SFC runs and do not interrupt it merely because the progress percentage pauses.
6. Roll back a recent software or driver change with System Restore
- Open Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore, or launch it from System Recovery Options if Windows will not boot.
- Choose a restore point dated before the first crash or the installation that preceded it.
- Review the affected programs and drivers, then confirm the restore.
- Allow Windows to restart without interrupting the process.
System Restore reverts system files, registry settings, and installed programs to the selected point. It does not remove personal documents, photos, or other personal files, but you should still back up important data whenever Windows is usable. A restore point is not a substitute for a file backup, and it may not exist if protection was disabled or the disk had no space. Afterward, test the original trigger before reinstalling the same update or driver.

When Windows 7 will not boot
Use the built-in recovery menu
- Restart and repeatedly press F8 before the Windows logo.
- Select Repair your computer and sign in with an administrator account if prompted.
- In System Recovery Options, try Startup Repair when boot files or boot configuration may be damaged.
- Use System Restore when a recent driver, update, or program change preceded the failure.
- Open Command Prompt only if you understand the offline repair command you intend to run; an incorrect command can make recovery harder.
Startup Repair may create a diagnostic log at %windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt. If Startup Repair reports that it cannot fix the computer, record that result and try a suitable restore point rather than running the same repair repeatedly. Startup Repair is intended for boot problems; it is not a general fix for every BSOD that occurs after Windows has loaded.
Use a Windows 7 repair disc or installation DVD
If the local recovery tools are missing, boot from a Windows 7 installation DVD or system-repair disc and choose the recovery tools. A repair disc can provide System Restore, System Image Recovery, Startup Repair, and Command Prompt when Windows cannot start normally. Media availability and edition compatibility vary, so use media that matches the installed Windows 7 edition where possible. If the disk does not contain the correct recovery environment, stop before applying an image or reinstalling.
A repair disc is different from full installation media: it supplies recovery tools but does not necessarily provide a license or a complete reinstall. If you must obtain a disc, verify that it is legitimate, matches the system architecture and edition, and is compatible with the computer’s license. Availability and any purchase price depend on the seller; do not assume that an inexpensive disc is authentic or suitable.

Do not jump straight to a reinstall or system-image restore if you still need files on the Windows partition. If Windows starts in Safe Mode, copy important data to an external drive. If it does not, use a trusted backup or a recovery environment to copy files before choosing a procedure that can overwrite the system. Confirm that the copied files open on another computer before erasing the original disk.
What common Windows 7 STOP codes suggest
Microsoft has Windows 7-specific guidance for these codes. They narrow the investigation but do not prove that one component is always responsible.
| STOP code | Displayed name | Useful first checks |
|---|---|---|
0x0000000A |
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL |
Review the named driver, recent driver changes, Safe Mode behavior, and memory-test results. |
0x0000007E |
SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED |
Check the module named on the screen, roll back a recent driver, remove newly added hardware, and inspect Event Viewer. |
0x00000050 |
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA |
Test memory, check recently installed drivers or hardware, and run System File Checker. |
Use the code to decide what evidence to collect, not to apply a universal fix. The configuration, driver version, and timing of the crash matter as much as the hexadecimal number. For example, 0x00000050 after a memory upgrade calls for a memory check and hardware rollback, while the same code after a driver update calls for Safe Mode and driver rollback first.

When to preserve a dump or seek advanced help
Windows may write a memory dump after a bug check. Preserve the dump file, the STOP screen photograph, Event Viewer entries, and the exact steps that reproduce the crash before deleting temporary files or reinstalling Windows. Microsoft notes that analyzing dumps is advanced work; it requires specialized debugging tools and can be difficult even when the dump names a module. Provide the complete evidence to a qualified technician rather than guessing from a single filename.
Recommended Free Tools
Seek hardware service when memory tests report errors, the computer crashes in Safe Mode, or removing a recent device does not change the behavior. Stop using the machine if it is overheating, emitting unusual electrical sounds, or repeatedly losing data; a BSOD is a protection mechanism, but repeated crashes can still corrupt open files. If the computer is under warranty, document the STOP code and all removed parts before contacting the manufacturer.
After the computer is stable
- Reconnect or reinstall one device at a time and test between changes.
- Keep a record of the working driver version and the date of each update.
- Maintain current backups so a future boot failure does not become a data-loss event.
- Keep the STOP code, dump file, SFC result, memory-test result, and recovery logs together if the problem returns.
- Do not immediately install several optional drivers or cleanup utilities; changing multiple variables makes a recurrence harder to diagnose.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering cleanup and diagnostic features. It runs on Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11 and has a category-based free trial of at least two days before a subscription; results vary, it does not repair every crash, and it complements rather than replaces antivirus software.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Windows 7 PC restart immediately after a blue screen?
Windows is often configured to restart automatically after a system failure. Press F8 before the Windows logo and choose Disable automatic restart on system failure so the complete STOP code remains visible.
What does a STOP code such as 0x0000007E mean?
It identifies the type of bug check, not a guaranteed failed component. Use the code, parameters, named module, Safe Mode result, recent changes, and Event Viewer together.
Can Safe Mode fix a Windows 7 BSOD?
Safe Mode is primarily a diagnostic environment. If the crash disappears there, roll back or uninstall a recently changed driver, service, or startup component and then test normal mode.
What should I do if Windows 7 will not boot at all?
Press F8 before the Windows logo, choose Repair your computer, and open System Recovery Options. Try Startup Repair for boot-file problems or System Restore for a recent update, driver, or software change.

Will System Restore delete my personal files?
System Restore reverts system files, registry settings, and installed programs, while leaving personal documents and photos intact. Back up important files first whenever possible.
How do I check whether memory caused the crash?
Run Windows Memory Diagnostic, restart for the test, and review the MemoryDiagnostics-Results entry under Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System. Any reported errors warrant hardware testing before further software changes.
Is a Windows 7 repair disc the same as an installation DVD?
No. A repair disc supplies recovery tools such as Startup Repair, System Restore, System Image Recovery, and Command Prompt. Installation media may offer additional setup options. Verify edition, architecture, legitimacy, and licensing before using either.
Should I reinstall Windows after a BSOD?
Not as a first step. Capture evidence, test Safe Mode and memory, run SFC, remove recent hardware, and try System Restore. Back up files before any reinstall or system-image recovery that could overwrite the system.
The Bottom Line
Start with evidence: record the full STOP screen and disable automatic restart. Then remove the newest hardware change, compare normal mode with Safe Mode, review Event Viewer, run Windows Memory Diagnostic and sfc /scannow, and use System Restore when a recent change is implicated. For an unbootable PC, F8 recovery tools or matching Windows 7 repair media provide Startup Repair and restore options. Keep backups and logs, and escalate to hardware service or dump analysis when the crash persists.
