VALORANT screen tearing happens when the GPU presents a frame while the monitor is still refreshing the previous one. The visible result is a horizontal break or misaligned section of the image, often when your frame rate is higher than the monitor’s refresh rate or when frame delivery is uneven. Set the monitor to its intended refresh rate, test VALORANT’s own VSync control, then stabilize frame delivery with an appropriate cap, current drivers and adequate cooling. If fixed-refresh operation remains troublesome, a compatible FreeSync or G-SYNC Compatible display is the hardware-level solution.

What screen tearing looks like in VALORANT

Tearing is not a cracked panel or a damaged game file. It is a timing mismatch between the display scan and the frames arriving from the graphics processor. A monitor may be halfway through drawing one frame when the GPU supplies the next, so the upper and lower portions of the screen represent different moments. During a fast mouse turn, the break is especially easy to notice as a line that appears to shift across the scene.

  • Refresh rate (Hz) is how many times the display is illuminated each second.
  • Frames per second (FPS) is how often the game produces a new image.

A 60 Hz monitor refreshes 60 times per second; a 144 Hz monitor refreshes 144 times per second. Those numbers do not guarantee that VALORANT will render exactly the same number of frames, nor that every frame will arrive at evenly spaced intervals.

NVIDIA’s Adaptive VSync documentation states: “When VSync is disabled in-game, screen tearing is observed when the frame rate exceeds the refresh rate of the display.” Riot also warns that disabling VSync can create visual artifacts when rendering is not synchronized with the display.

Why VALORANT tears at 60 Hz or 144 Hz

Frame rate is above the fixed refresh rate

On a fixed-refresh display, a GPU running at 200 FPS can deliver new frames faster than a 60 Hz panel can show them. The monitor starts a refresh, receives a newer frame partway through, and displays portions of both. At 144 Hz, the same thing can occur whenever the rendered rate rises above 144 FPS.

FPS is unstable even when the average looks high

An average of 144 FPS does not mean that each frame took the same amount of time. Short spikes, dips and delayed frames can make motion look uneven and can expose tearing. CPU scheduling, shader compilation, background applications, thermal throttling and an overloaded graphics card can all disturb frame delivery.

The monitor is still running at a lower mode

Windows may leave a high-refresh monitor at 60 Hz after a driver change, cable swap or display reset. VALORANT can then render far more frames than the active display mode can present cleanly. Confirm the operating-system setting rather than relying on the monitor’s advertised maximum.

Conflicting synchronization controls

VALORANT, Windows, NVIDIA’s control panel and AMD’s software can each expose frame or synchronization options. A driver override may behave differently from the game’s setting, making troubleshooting difficult. Start with the application-controlled option and change one setting at a time.

Fix VALORANT screen tearing step by step

1. Select the monitor’s intended refresh rate in Windows

  1. Open Settings in Windows.
  2. Choose System, then Display.
  3. Open Advanced display.
  4. If more than one monitor is connected, select the display used for VALORANT.
  5. Under the refresh-rate control, choose the intended mode, such as 60 Hz, 120 Hz, 144 Hz or another mode your monitor and connection support.
  6. Launch VALORANT again and check whether the tear line is still present.

Riot documents the Windows method for checking refresh rate and also describes an NVIDIA Control Panel route. AMD users should use the Windows path. If a desired rate is missing, check the cable, adapter, input selection and monitor menu; the panel cannot use a mode that the connection does not expose.

2. Test VALORANT’s built-in VSync setting

  1. Open VALORANT and select the gear icon.
  2. Go to Settings → Video → Graphics Quality.
  3. Find VSync.
  4. Enable it, apply the setting and test a practice range or match.
  5. If the result is worse, return to the same menu, disable it and test again under the same conditions.

VSync is the simplest software test because it makes frame presentation follow the display’s refresh cycle. It can change input latency and frame pacing, so competitive players may prefer another configuration after confirming the cause. While testing, leave NVIDIA or AMD driver synchronization on the option that uses the application setting; stacking a game setting with a forced driver override can hide which control is responsible.

3. Add a sensible frame-rate limit

A cap prevents the renderer from running unnecessarily far ahead of the display. The correct number depends on your refresh rate, whether the monitor uses variable refresh rate (VRR), and how consistently your system can deliver frames. There is no single cap that is correct for every VALORANT setup.

  • For a fixed-refresh 60 Hz display, begin with a limit around the display’s capability and adjust while watching for stable frame times.
  • For a 144 Hz display, avoid allowing large, sustained excursions above 144 FPS if those excursions are what trigger tearing.
  • For a VRR display, keep the cap inside the monitor’s supported VRR range; the exact ceiling should leave enough margin for the technology to remain active.

Use VALORANT’s frame-limit controls rather than changing several external limiters at once. Riot’s performance guidance says LIMIT FPS ALWAYS should be set lower than your average FPS when heat or workload is a concern. That instruction is about reducing sustained load, not a universal refresh-rate formula. Change the cap in small steps and test the same scene after each change.

4. Watch frame delivery with VALORANT’s performance graphs

  1. Open Settings → Video → Stats.
  2. Enable the FPS and frame-time or related performance graphs available in your client.
  3. Reproduce the tearing in a practice range or match.
  4. Look for sudden frame-time spikes, large FPS swings or a mismatch between client FPS and the refresh rate you selected.

The graphs help distinguish a synchronization problem from a broader performance problem. A consistently high FPS number with visible tearing points toward presentation timing; sharp dips and spikes indicate that you should also investigate CPU/GPU load, background software and thermals.

5. Update the graphics driver and check its profile

Install the current graphics driver supplied for your GPU model and Windows edition. After installation, open the NVIDIA or AMD graphics settings and confirm that VALORANT is not being forced into a conflicting VSync, frame-limit or low-latency profile. For a clean test, let the game control VSync and use only one active frame limiter.

If tearing began immediately after a driver update, record the driver version and test the previous known-good release using the vendor’s supported rollback method. Do not repeatedly install unrelated versions without first changing one variable and checking the result.

6. Address heat, power and blocked airflow

Riot recommends using an appropriate high-performance power setting when needed, keeping vents clear, removing accumulated dust and taking breaks if the computer is overheating. A hot GPU or CPU may lower clocks or produce irregular frame times, which can look like a synchronization fault.

  • Check that desktop and laptop vents are unobstructed.
  • Close unnecessary launchers, browser tabs, recording tools and overlays while testing.
  • On a laptop, test with the correct AC power mode rather than a battery-saving profile.
  • Compare a cool start with a later, hotter session; worsening behavior over time suggests a thermal or power issue.

When VRR is the better solution

Variable refresh rate allows the display to adjust its refresh timing to the GPU’s frame rate within a supported range. AMD describes FreeSync as synchronizing a compatible display’s refresh rate with GPU frame rate to reduce or eliminate tearing. NVIDIA describes Adaptive VSync as unlocking below the refresh cap and locking above it to minimize tearing and stutter. Monitor, GPU, cable and software compatibility determine whether the feature works as expected.

FreeSync and G-SYNC Compatible considerations

  • Confirm that the monitor actually lists FreeSync or G-SYNC Compatible support and note its stated operating range.
  • Use a connection and GPU that support the feature; an incompatible adapter or port can prevent VRR from engaging.
  • Enable the monitor’s adaptive-sync option in its on-screen menu, then enable the corresponding feature in the graphics driver.
  • Keep VALORANT’s frame rate inside the supported range with a cap if necessary. A frame rate below the range may cause the display to leave VRR operation, while a rate above it can reintroduce fixed-refresh behavior.

VRR can widen the tear-free operating window, but it costs more than a basic fixed-refresh display and does not replace correct Windows refresh selection, driver setup or stable thermals.

Choosing the right fix for your symptom

What you observe Most useful first test What the result suggests
A clear horizontal break during rapid turns, especially when FPS exceeds the monitor’s Hz Enable VALORANT VSync If the break disappears, presentation timing was the primary issue.
The monitor is advertised as 144 Hz but Windows shows 60 Hz Display settings → Advanced display The active Windows mode was limiting the display.
Tearing appears together with large FPS or frame-time swings Enable VALORANT performance graphs and set a stable cap Uneven frame delivery is contributing to the artifact.
The problem worsens after long sessions or in a warm room Check ventilation, dust, power mode and temperatures Thermal throttling or workload instability may be disturbing frame pacing.
Fixed-refresh tests remain unsatisfactory across games Evaluate a compatible FreeSync or G-SYNC Compatible monitor Variable refresh hardware may better match your frame-rate variation.

What not to assume

  • A higher FPS counter does not prove that motion is smoother; frame-time consistency matters.
  • Turning VSync off is not automatically wrong. It may reduce synchronization delay for some players, but it also permits the timing mismatch that causes tearing.
  • A 144 Hz monitor does not force VALORANT to render at 144 FPS. The game, CPU, GPU and settings determine actual output.
  • Buying a VRR monitor will not correct a wrongly selected Windows refresh rate, an outdated driver or an overheated system.
  • There is no published official statistic establishing how common VALORANT-specific tearing is, so claims that a particular percentage of players experience it are unsupported.

A practical testing order

Change only one control between tests so that you can identify the cause. Use this order:

  1. Verify the physical display mode in Windows Advanced display.
  2. Test VALORANT VSync with driver overrides left on application-controlled settings.
  3. Enable the in-game performance graphs and observe FPS and frame-time behavior.
  4. Set a conservative frame cap appropriate to the monitor and, if applicable, its VRR range.
  5. Update or, if necessary, roll back the graphics driver while recording the version.
  6. Correct ventilation, dust, power-mode and background-load problems.
  7. If fixed-refresh operation still tears, configure compatible VRR hardware and retest inside its supported range.

As an optional shortcut for the driver portion of this process, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide backup, restore and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 with a two-day free trial without a credit card, followed by a subscription; results vary and it cannot repair every cause of tearing.
