The fastest way to fix The Elder Scrolls Online on a Mac is to identify the exact stage that fails, check whether ESO services are available, and then use the launcher’s own update and repair tools. A launcher that will not start, a patcher stuck in a restart loop, and a login error can have different causes.
Write down the complete error text or number and where it appears: while opening the launcher, after entering your credentials, or while connecting after the game starts. Follow the matching section below rather than reinstalling the entire game immediately.

First, identify the failure stage
“ESO will not launch” describes several different failures. The stage at which the process stops determines which fix is sensible. Record the exact message, including its number, before closing a dialog.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Failure stage | Typical symptom | Cause classes to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Launcher startup | The ESO launcher does not open, closes immediately, or opens without usable announcements. | Launcher installation, a macOS change, local security software, or a temporary service issue. |
| Updating or patching | The progress bar stops, the launcher repeatedly restarts, or the game reports that it cannot patch. | Damaged or stale launcher metadata, blocked network access, or corrupted game files. |
| Credential or login screen | Your credentials are rejected or an error appears before a character can be selected. | ESO service availability, connectivity, an outdated client, or account/platform linkage. |
| After launch | The game opens but cannot connect to a megaserver. | Service availability, connectivity, client files, or a megaserver change that has not finished processing. |
ESO Support categorizes its guidance as Launcher or Login. If your symptom does not fit one category, check the other; a patcher error can prevent a login, and a login message can be caused by an outdated client.

Use the stage as a sorting tool, not as proof of a single cause. For example, the game can fail at login because its client is out of date, while a launcher that opens normally may still be unable to download a patch because a firewall blocks its connection. The same broad complaint can therefore lead to different fixes. Note what happens immediately before the failure and whether the message appears every time or only intermittently.
Before making changes, keep a short record: the full error text and number, whether the launcher opened, whether the patch completed, and whether you use Steam. These details make it easier to choose the next step and later tell ESO Support what you have already tried. If the screen only says that ESO cannot connect, record whether that occurs before or after you enter your credentials.
Check ESO service status before repairing your Mac
Before deleting files or changing security settings, check ESO’s official Service Alerts. A service outage is a server-side problem: local repair steps cannot restore login until the service is available again.
Error 201 is specifically associated with three possible classes of cause in ESO’s support guidance: an ESO service problem, a connectivity problem, or an outdated client. If an alert is active, note it and wait for service to return. If no alert explains the failure, continue with the client and network steps below.
This check is worth doing even if ESO was working earlier in the day. Service availability can change, and an outage can make a perfectly usable Mac look like it has a local account or installation problem. When an alert is active, avoid repeatedly changing account settings, deleting launcher files, or reinstalling; those actions cannot bring an unavailable service back online. Recheck the alert before resuming local troubleshooting.
If no alert is listed, that does not identify the cause by itself. Continue through the steps that match the failure stage: check for an update before treating a login error as a password problem, and check the launcher’s network permission if patching cannot proceed. Service status is the first branch in the decision, not the only diagnostic step.
Refresh the launcher and request the current update
A launcher can remain open while failing to load announcements or recognize that a new client is available. Refresh it before attempting a reinstall.

- Open it again and allow it to finish loading.
- If it offers an update, let the update complete before starting the game.
- If announcements do not load or the game still will not start, open Game Options and choose Check For Updates.
Do not interrupt the launcher while it is checking. If it finds an update, start the game only after the patch finishes and the launcher returns to its normal ready state.
Use Check For Updates when the launcher has not prompted as expected, announcements fail to load, or the game cannot start because its client may be behind. This is a less disruptive first step than reinstalling. If the update check succeeds but the game still fails, move on to Repair or the specific error guidance rather than repeating the same check indefinitely.
Keep the distinction between the launcher and the game client in mind. Restarting the launcher refreshes its state; checking for updates asks it to obtain the current game update; Repair checks installed game files and may replace problematic ones. These steps address related but different problems, so completing one does not necessarily make the others unnecessary.
Fix ordinary patch and update failures
For a patch that stops or fails without the Mac-specific restart loop described in the next section, ESO Support recommends working through the launcher, firewall, and repair checks in that order.

1. Restart the launcher
Quit and reopen the launcher, then try the update again. A restart can cause the patcher to re-read its update state and obtain a current launcher component.
Give the launcher a fresh start rather than repeatedly clicking the update control while the same process is open. Once it reopens, watch whether it loads announcements, checks for an update, or returns the same patch error. That result helps distinguish a launcher that cannot make progress from one that completes its update check but encounters damaged game files.
2. Allow the launcher through local security software
Confirm that the ESO launcher is allowed by the macOS Applications Firewall. Also check any other firewall, endpoint-security tool, or antivirus product installed on the Mac. These controls can block the launcher’s connection even when ordinary web browsing works. Allow the launcher application, then restart it and retry the patch.
Firewall labels differ between macOS releases and security products. The important check is that the installed Launcher.app is permitted to make network connections; do not disable protection permanently just to test a patch.

A browser loading websites does not prove the launcher is permitted, because the firewall may make decisions per application. After allowing the launcher, reopen it and try the patch again so you can tell whether that change affected the result. Restore your usual security settings rather than leaving protections off as a workaround.
3. Run the built-in repair
In the launcher, open Game Options and choose Repair. Repair examines the installed game files and re-downloads files it identifies as problematic. Let the process reach completion; closing the launcher midway can leave the client in the same incomplete state.
Repair is a file-integrity operation, not a replacement for checking service status. It is useful when the server is available and the local client is damaged, but it cannot fix an ESO-wide outage.
Plan to leave the launcher open while Repair works. It may take time and may download a substantial amount of data, so a stable network connection is helpful. If the repair completes and the same error remains, do not assume it failed: the remaining cause may be service availability, connectivity, a blocked launcher, or account linkage rather than the local files.

Stop a Mac patcher restart loop
ESO’s Mac patching guidance describes a specific loop that can begin after a new update: the launcher repeatedly restarts instead of completing the patch. The prescribed fix is to remove one launcher-version file so the patcher can rebuild its state.
- Quit the ESO launcher.
- In Finder, locate the folder in which the ESO launcher is installed. ESO Support gives
/ZeniMax Online/Launcher.app/as the typical patcher location; your installation may be in a different folder. - Inside the patcher’s installation directory, delete the file named
Bethesda.net_Launcher_Mac.version. Delete only that file, not the entire game directory orLauncher.app. - Start the launcher again. It should self-update; if it does not, close and restart the launcher once more.
- After the launcher finishes updating, use Game Options → Repair if the game still reports damaged or missing files.
This file-removal step is for the documented Mac restart loop. It is not a reason to remove the complete ESO installation, and it should not be used as a substitute for the ordinary firewall and repair checks when the launcher is failing for another reason.
Be precise about the symptom before using this recovery: a repeated launcher restart following an update is the case this step addresses. A patch that simply stalls, an error at credential entry, or a connection failure after the game opens is not automatically the same problem. For those symptoms, follow the relevant update, firewall, Repair, or login steps instead.

If the file is not where you expect it, do not compensate by deleting the entire ZeniMax Online folder. The path is described as typical, not universal, and installations can be located in different folders. Search the launcher’s installation directory and make sure the filename matches exactly before removing anything.
When launch problems begin after a macOS update
If ESO worked before a macOS update and then the launcher stopped launching, ESO Support provides a launcher-reinstallation path. This is a reinstallation of the launcher application, not an instruction to erase the whole game first.
- Quit ESO and the launcher.
- Open the ZeniMax Online folder and remove the ESO Launcher.app application.
- Sign in to your ESO account page and download the Mac launcher again.
- Install the replacement launcher, open it, and allow it to update before starting the game.
Steam users should not use the standalone account-page download for this step. Download or reinstall the ESO launcher through the game’s entry in their Steam library so the Steam installation and account linkage remain consistent.
If the failure did not begin after a macOS update, try the update, firewall, and repair sequence first. Reinstalling the launcher is more disruptive than refreshing it and does not address an active server outage.
The timing is the clue that makes this path relevant: the launcher worked before the operating-system update and stopped afterward. If that is your situation, replace the launcher application as described, then let the replacement complete its own update before testing the game. Do not infer from this procedure that the whole game must be downloaded again; ESO’s instruction concerns the launcher.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For Steam installations, use Steam’s library for the launcher download or reinstall. Keeping that route consistent matters because the Steam account must own ESO and be linked to the ESO account used at login. If you use a different installation path, follow the account-page download route instead of mixing it with the Steam-specific instructions.
Resolve login errors by their exact message
Error 201
Error 201 does not identify one single local defect. ESO lists service trouble, connectivity trouble, and an outdated client as possible causes.
- Check the official Service Alerts for an outage or maintenance event.
- If no service issue is reported, reopen the launcher and use Game Options → Check For Updates.
- Confirm that the Mac can reach the internet and that the launcher is allowed through the Applications Firewall and any other security software.
- Run Game Options → Repair if the client is current but login still fails.
Do not keep changing account details while an outage or stale client is the likely explanation. The error must be reassessed after the service returns or the update completes.
Follow the order rather than jumping straight to the most disruptive fix. An outage makes local file repair ineffective; a client update can resolve a stale-client cause; a firewall can prevent the launcher from reaching the service even when the Mac is otherwise online. If each check is clear and Error 201 persists, preserve the exact message and tell support which checks completed.
“Unexpected Internal Error”
ESO’s guidance associates this message with megaserver load, corrupt local files, and, for Steam players, a missing or incorrect Steam account linkage. Use the following order:
- Check ESO service status and try again after a short pause if the megaserver is under heavy load.
- Restart the launcher and game.
- Run the launcher’s Repair operation so damaged files can be replaced.
- If you play through Steam, verify that the Steam account owns ESO and sign in with the ESO account linked to that Steam ownership. A different ESO account can produce a linkage failure even when the Steam client itself is working.
- If you switched megaservers, wait three minutes before trying to connect again. ESO Support gives that wait as an explicit troubleshooting instruction.
Changing megaservers repeatedly before the three-minute interval has elapsed can make the symptom harder to interpret. Make one change, wait the full interval, and then retry.

For Steam players, distinguish a working Steam client from the correct account relationship. Being able to open Steam does not establish that the signed-in Steam account owns ESO or that the ESO account entered at login is the one linked to it. Check both sides of that relationship before repeatedly resetting or changing credentials.
Login fails after the game opens
If the launcher and game start but the connection to a megaserver fails, treat it as a login/connectivity problem rather than a launcher-startup problem. Check service status, confirm the client is current, and use Repair if the files may be damaged. If the message names a megaserver change, apply the three-minute wait before another attempt.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
That distinction can save time: a successful launcher start does not mean the service is available or that the game client is fully current. Likewise, an error after opening the game does not by itself mean that the launcher needs to be reinstalled. Match the next step to what has already succeeded and where the connection stops.
Use Repair without turning it into a full reinstall
The launcher’s Repair command is ESO’s first-line local recovery tool. It compares the installed files with the expected client and downloads replacements for files it finds problematic. It is appropriate when:
- an update completed but the game will not start;
- the launcher reports damaged or missing files;
- an “Unexpected Internal Error” persists after service status and account checks; or
- a patch succeeds only after repeated attempts and the installed files may be incomplete.
Repair may take time and may download a substantial amount of data. Keep the Mac connected to a reliable network and leave the launcher open until it reports completion. A completed repair does not bypass a server outage, an account-linkage problem, or a firewall block.
Think of Repair as a targeted check of the game installation, not as a universal reset. If Repair reports that it has completed but a login message remains, return to the relevant branch: check alerts and connectivity for Error 201, account ownership and linkage for a Steam “Unexpected Internal Error,” or the three-minute interval after a megaserver switch. Repeating a successful repair without checking those factors is unlikely to address them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat not to do first
- Do not reinstall the entire game for every error. The documented Mac response to a post-macOS-update launch failure is to replace the launcher first.
- Do not delete the whole ZeniMax Online folder for a patch loop. The Mac-specific instruction names one file:
Bethesda.net_Launcher_Mac.version. - Do not assume Error 201 proves your password is wrong. Service availability, connectivity, and client age are all listed possibilities.
- Do not leave the firewall disabled. Permit the launcher application, then restore normal protection.
- Do not retry a megaserver switch immediately. Wait the three minutes specified by ESO Support.
Also avoid treating every launch, patch, and login symptom as one generic installation failure. Check service status before local repair, use the Mac-specific version-file step only for the restart loop, and reserve launcher replacement for the post-macOS-update scenario that calls for it. This keeps the troubleshooting proportional to the problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Escalate with information support can use
If the service is available, the launcher is current, Repair completes, and the relevant Mac or Steam step has not helped, use the ESO Help Portal’s search and guided troubleshooter. Search for the exact error text rather than a broad phrase such as “ESO broken.” ESO Support’s launcher and login categories are useful starting points; check the other category if your symptom does not fit the first one.
When opening a support request, include:
- the complete error message and number;
- the stage at which it appears: launcher opening, credential entry, or connection after launch;
- whether the game is installed through Steam or another ESO launcher path;
- whether Service Alerts showed an outage;
- whether Check For Updates and Repair completed; and
- which launcher, firewall, reinstall, or megaserver steps you already performed.
This information separates a service-side incident from a local file, network, or account-linkage problem and prevents support from sending you through steps you have already completed.
Use the exact error as your search phrase in the Help Portal, including its number if it has one. If an error appears in a different stage than the portal category suggests, check both Launcher and Login guidance. When you contact support, report results rather than only listing attempts: for example, say whether an alert was active, whether the update check found anything, and whether Repair reached completion. That makes the report more actionable.

Service availability, launcher behavior, and macOS security labels can also change. Use the current Service Alerts and the latest ESO Support wording when a message differs from the examples here.
Quick decision guide
Use this short sequence when you are unsure which section applies:
- Write down the symptom. Is the failure at launcher startup, during patching, after entering credentials, or after the game opens?
- Check Service Alerts. If an outage is active, wait for service to return before trying local fixes.
- Refresh and update. Quit and reopen the launcher; use Game Options → Check For Updates if needed.
- Choose the matching local fix. Use the version-file removal only for the Mac patcher restart loop; check firewall permission for blocked or failed patching; use launcher reinstall if the problem began after a macOS update.
- Repair if files may be damaged. Let the operation complete before testing again.
- Check account and timing details. For Steam, verify game ownership and the linked ESO account. After changing megaservers, wait three minutes before reconnecting.
- Escalate with specifics. Provide the exact message, failure stage, installation route, and steps already completed.
This is a troubleshooting order, not a guarantee that every case has the same cause. A service alert, a launcher restart loop, an Error 201 message, and a Steam linkage issue call for different actions. Following the sequence helps avoid unnecessary deletion or a full game reinstall while preserving the information needed to narrow down a stubborn problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I try first if ESO will not launch on my Mac?
Record the exact error and where it occurs, then check ESO’s official Service Alerts. If there is no outage explaining the problem, quit and reopen the launcher, check for updates, and use Repair if the local game files may be damaged.
How do I fix an ESO patcher that keeps restarting on Mac?
For the Mac restart loop described by ESO Support, quit the launcher and delete only Bethesda.net_Launcher_Mac.version from the patcher’s installation directory. Restart the launcher and let it self-update. Do not delete the whole game folder.
Should I reinstall all of ESO after a macOS update?
Not as the first step. ESO’s Mac launch guidance directs players to remove and reinstall the Launcher.app. Steam users should download or reinstall it through the ESO entry in their Steam library. This is a launcher reinstall, not an instruction to erase the whole game.
What does Error 201 mean in ESO?
ESO lists service trouble, connectivity trouble, and an outdated client as possible causes. Check Service Alerts, update the client, confirm the launcher is allowed through security software, and use Repair if the current client may have damaged files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow long should I wait after switching ESO megaservers?
Wait three minutes before trying to connect again. ESO Support gives this as an explicit instruction after changing megaservers.
What should Steam players check for an “Unexpected Internal Error”?
Check that the signed-in Steam account owns ESO and use the ESO account linked to that Steam ownership. Also check service status, restart the launcher and game, and run Repair if files may be damaged.
The Bottom Line
Match the fix to the failure stage: check Service Alerts first, refresh and update the launcher, then use Repair or the Mac-specific launcher steps only when their symptoms fit. Record the exact error and what you tried; Steam ownership and account linkage, plus the three-minute wait after a megaserver switch, can matter for login failures.
