How to Fix the “Exception in Server Tick Loop” Error in Minecraft

“Exception in server tick loop” is a crash wrapper, not one bug. Learn how to read the stack trace, back up safely, and choose the correct JSON, mod, world, installation, or memory fix.

“Exception in server tick loop” is a crash wrapper, not a single fault. The reliable fix is to read the first Caused by: line in the crash report or latest.log, identify the deepest file, mod, dimension, chunk, or player named there, and then apply the matching recovery branch. An old server may be failing while loading ops.json; a modded profile may have a loader or mixin conflict; or one world may contain invalid dimension or chunk data. Increasing RAM or deleting random configuration files cannot repair all of those cases.

Use this order: stop making changes, back up the world, capture the complete trace, choose the narrow branch below, and test the repair on a copy whenever world data is involved.

What the message actually means

Minecraft runs a repeating server tick that updates worlds, entities, block events, and players. If an exception escapes that work, the game records Exception in server tick loop and stops. The wording describes where the crash became fatal, not why it happened.

Official bug records demonstrate how different the underlying causes can be. MC-187673 concerns an unregistered dimension type. MC-241778 concerns a Superflat-world upgrade failure associated with biome decoration. An older-server pattern documented by hosting support shows a java.lang.NullPointerException at net.minecraft.server.v1_7_R3.JsonList.load(JsonList.java:171), where JSON list files are implicated. Those are separate failures that happen to share the same headline.

Therefore, “fix the server tick loop error” is not a one-command job. Your own stack trace determines whether the safe action is to recreate a list file, roll back a mod, test a world copy, or rebuild an installation.

Do this before changing anything

  1. Stop the game or dedicated server cleanly. Do not keep restarting while files are being written. If a server console is available, use its normal stop command; otherwise close it only after it has stopped accepting commands.
  2. Make a Java Edition world backup. In the launcher, open the world list, choose Edit World, then Make Backup. Minecraft Help says the result is a dated ZIP in the backups folder. Copy that ZIP somewhere outside the active instance as an additional safeguard.
  3. Save the evidence. Keep the newest crash report and latest.log. Search from the top for the first Caused by:, then follow the nested causes to the deepest useful line. Record the Minecraft version, loader (if any), Java version, world or dimension name, chunk coordinates, player name, mod ID, and file path that appear below it.
  4. Do not apply generic fixes yet. Do not delete every configuration file, reinstall Java, or raise memory simply because the headline contains “server tick loop.” Those actions can destroy evidence and do not address malformed JSON, an incompatible mod, or damaged world data.
  5. Work on a copy when the trace names a world. Duplicate the backed-up world and test the duplicate. Keep the original untouched until the result is understood.

Match the stack trace to the right repair

Trace clue Likely scope First reversible test Do not assume
JsonList.load, v1_7_R3, or a null-pointer while reading a JSON list Older server list files such as ops.json or whitelist.json Back up, recreate only the named list files, and restart That this repairs mod, dimension, or world-generation faults
Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, a mod ID, mixin, or config parser Mod, loader, mixin, or configuration incompatibility Disable or roll back the named component and test the same game version That changing Java or RAM will make incompatible code compatible
Dimension type, biome decoration, chunk generation, entity data, or one world World or upgrade data Test a copy and create a new world on the same version and mod set That deleting server configuration files will repair world data
No specific file or mod; a clean profile also fails Installation, Java, launch directory, or another environment issue Create a clean installation using the same game version That more memory alone is a universal solution

Branch A: repair the older JSON-list variant

Use this branch only when the trace matches the documented older pattern: java.lang.NullPointerException: Exception in server tick loop with net.minecraft.server.v1_7_R3.JsonList.load(JsonList.java:171), or an equivalent line that clearly identifies JSON list loading. The usual files are ops.json and whitelist.json; usercache.json is commonly recreated at the same time.

Procedure

  1. Stop the server and make a complete server-directory backup, including the world folders and the three JSON files.
  2. Open the server file manager or the directory that contains the server JAR.
  3. Delete ops.json, whitelist.json, and usercache.json only if the stack trace points to this JSON-list failure.
  4. Start the server again. It should create fresh versions of the files.
  5. Re-enter operators and whitelist entries through the server’s normal commands or management panel. A recreated file does not preserve the old entries.

This operation is deliberately narrow. It can remove stale or unreadable list data, but it cannot fix a mod that throws during a tick, an unregistered dimension type, or a world-generation failure. If the same trace returns after recreation, restore the backup and move to the branch named by the new evidence instead of repeatedly deleting files.

Branch B: a mod, loader, mixin, or configuration parser is named

When the deepest lines identify Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, a mod ID, a mixin class, or a configuration parser, treat that component as the primary suspect. Minecraft Help states that modding is not officially supported and that Minecraft Support cannot assist with issues arising from mod usage; the mod author or pack maintainer is the appropriate escalation path.

Isolate the named component

  1. Write down the exact Minecraft version, loader version, Java version, and mod-pack revision from the log. Keep them unchanged for the first test.
  2. Disable the component named in the deepest cause, or roll it back to the last version that worked. Do not remove unrelated mods at the same time; changing several variables hides the cause.
  3. Launch a clean profile on the same Minecraft and Java versions. A clean profile means the loader and required dependencies only, with no optional content that is not needed to reproduce the problem.
  4. Load a test world. If the clean profile works, the installation and basic runtime are probably sound; add the suspect mod back alone and test again.
  5. Re-enable remaining mods in small groups. When the crash returns, split that group until one component or pair reproduces it.
  6. Check the component’s documented compatibility and configuration with the pack maintainer. Preserve the crash report when asking for help.

Do not infer that a mod is innocent because the headline says “server.” A client-side-looking mixin can still alter server tick code, and a configuration parser can fail before a world finishes loading. Conversely, do not blame a mod merely because one is installed: the named class and deepest cause are the useful evidence.

Branch C: world, dimension, chunk, or upgrade failure

Choose this branch when the trace names a dimension type, biome decoration, chunk generation, entity data, a particular world, or coordinates. The goal is to determine whether the installation is healthy and whether the failure is confined to one piece of saved data.

Test without risking the original world

  1. Duplicate the world from the dated backup. Give the copy a clear test name and never overwrite the original during diagnosis.
  2. Use the same Minecraft version, loader, mods, and Java runtime that created the failure. Changing versions at this stage can produce a second, unrelated migration problem.
  3. Start the copied world and observe whether the crash occurs during world load, when a named dimension is selected, or when a particular chunk or entity is reached.
  4. Create a new world with the same game and mod versions. A new world that loads while the copy fails points toward saved data; failure in both points toward the installation or mod set.
  5. If only one dimension or area fails, preserve the copy and obtain a tool or procedure specifically designed for that format. Do not remove random region, data, or player files without a verified backup and a reason tied to the trace.

MC-187673 records an unregistered dimension type, while MC-241778 records a Superflat-world upgrade crash tied to biome decoration. Their listed fixes—1.16 Pre-release 3 and 1.18 Pre-release 4, respectively—are historical bug-record entries, not a promise that every current release has the same defect or that upgrading alone will repair an existing world. Treat those reports as examples of why the named world subsystem matters.

Branch D: installation, Java, or memory problems

Use this branch after the trace fails to identify a specific mod or world object, or after a clean, same-version profile reproduces the crash. Separate installation problems from memory problems: they require different tests.

Build a clean installation

  1. Create a new Minecraft Java Edition installation using the same game version as the failing profile.
  2. Launch it with default settings and no downloaded mods or custom advanced options.
  3. Test a new world first, then test a copy of the affected world if the clean profile is stable.
  4. If the clean installation launches, troubleshoot the old installation’s downloaded mods and advanced settings one at a time. Copy defaults selectively rather than replacing the clean directory wholesale.
  5. If the clean installation also fails, keep the new crash report and verify the Java runtime and game version before changing anything else.

Verify a dedicated-server launch

The official server setup guidance lists three prerequisites: Java must be installed and up to date, the server JAR must match the intended Minecraft version, and the command must be run from the server directory with java -jar. A launch from the wrong directory can make relative paths, libraries, or configuration files appear to be missing.

Check the JAR filename and version against the world and client you intend to run. Do not replace a server JAR while the only evidence points to a damaged world; preserve the old directory so you can return to it.

Review JVM memory only when the evidence supports it

Minecraft Help explains that memory is controlled through the JVM -Xmx value. Back up worlds before editing launch arguments. On a 32-bit operating system, the practical maximum is 4 GB. On a 64-bit system, the guidance recommends no more than half of total system RAM for Minecraft. Leaving enough memory for the operating system and other services is essential on a dedicated host.

Memory changes are appropriate when the log shows an out-of-memory condition or the process is clearly exhausting its allocation. They will not turn malformed JSON into valid JSON, resolve an incompatible mixin, register a missing dimension type, or reconstruct corrupt chunk data. Increase the value cautiously, change one variable, and retest.

How to read the evidence instead of guessing

Start at the first cause, then go deeper

The headline may appear near the top of a crash report, but the actionable detail is usually below it. The first Caused by: introduces the immediate exception; nested causes can reveal the actual parser, mod class, file, dimension, or entity. The deepest named element is generally a better lead than the first broad package name.

Classify the named object

  • File name: a JSON or configuration path supports a targeted file repair.
  • Mod ID, loader, or mixin: isolate or roll back that component.
  • Dimension, biome, chunk, or entity: test a copied world and a new world.
  • Java runtime or memory exception: validate installation and JVM settings.

Keep versions attached to every test

Record the exact Minecraft release and, where applicable, loader, mod-pack, Java, and server-JAR versions beside each result. A test is useful only when you know what changed. The strongest comparison is a clean, unmodded installation using the same Minecraft and Java versions, because it separates downloaded content from the base runtime without introducing a version migration.

Recovery options compared

Recovery option When it fits Reversibility What a successful result tells you
Recreate the three JSON list files The trace specifically points to older JsonList.load processing High if the original files were backed up; list entries must be restored The failure was tied to those list files, not necessarily to the world
Disable or roll back one mod A mod ID, loader, mixin, or parser is named High; keep the original profile and change one component The named component or its interaction is implicated when the crash disappears
Test a copied world and create a new world A dimension, chunk, biome, entity, or upgrade path is named High when the original remains untouched Different results separate saved-data damage from installation-wide failure
Clean same-version installation No narrow cause is identified, or the base profile itself may be damaged High; the old installation can remain intact A working clean profile points to old mods or advanced settings
Change -Xmx The log indicates memory exhaustion or an environmental limit Easy to undo, but it changes runtime behavior Only a memory-related failure should improve; other causes remain

After the server starts again

  • Keep the dated world ZIP and the pre-repair server directory until the world has been opened, saved, and restarted successfully.
  • If JSON lists were recreated, restore operators and whitelist entries deliberately rather than copying the old files back wholesale.
  • For a mod diagnosis, document the working loader, mod versions, Java version, and configuration so a future update can be bisected.
  • For a world diagnosis, make a fresh backup before attempting any upgrade or format conversion.
  • On a dedicated server, confirm that the launch command, working directory, server JAR, and Java runtime are the ones you intend to keep.
  • Use scheduled backups or a host file manager that lets you download and restore complete world directories. Backup storage is more valuable than a speculative “repair” button because it preserves a known-good rollback point.

Common wrong turns

Deleting every configuration file

This may erase useful settings and still leave the failing world or mod untouched. Delete only the files identified by a matching stack trace, and keep a copy first.

Updating Java as a universal cure

Java compatibility matters for installation and launch, but an up-to-date runtime does not fix a malformed JSON list, unregistered dimension type, or incompatible mod configuration. Verify Java as an environmental prerequisite, not as a substitute for diagnosis.

Assigning all available RAM

Giving Minecraft nearly all system memory can starve the operating system and other server processes. The official guidance caps 32-bit systems at 4 GB and recommends no more than half of RAM on 64-bit systems. More allocation cannot repair non-memory exceptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Testing with a different version immediately

A different Minecraft, loader, or Java version changes the experiment and may trigger a migration failure. First reproduce the problem with the same versions, then make a deliberate upgrade or rollback while retaining the backup.

Assuming the headline identifies the fix

The same wrapper covers JSON-list loading, mod code, dimension registration, biome decoration, and other failures. The first cause and deepest named component are the decision points.

When to ask for help

Provide the complete crash report or relevant latest.log section, exact Minecraft and Java versions, loader and mod list if applicable, whether a new world loads, and the result of the clean-profile test. Remove account credentials and server secrets, but do not omit the nested Caused by: lines. For modded installations, contact the mod author or pack maintainer; for an unmodded clean installation, use Minecraft’s official support channels with the same evidence.
