Prismarine is the blue-green block family associated with ocean monuments. The quickest way to obtain a large, immediate supply is to locate an ocean monument, prepare for guardian attacks and Mining Fatigue, then mine its walls and rooms. For renewable supplies, defeat or farm guardians for prismarine shards and crystals. Shards also let you craft prismarine, prismarine bricks and dark prismarine, while prismarine and sea-lantern blocks activate conduits.

What prismarine is in Minecraft

Prismarine is a family of underwater building blocks that forms much of an ocean monument. Its colors range from blue-green to darker tones, and its patterned variants give underwater bases, docks, temples and large builds a distinct palette. You can obtain finished blocks by mining monuments, find smaller amounts in some underwater ruins, or craft the main variants from prismarine shards.

The family has three principal decorative forms:

  • Prismarine: the standard blue-green block.
  • Prismarine bricks: a more strongly patterned variant made from shards.
  • Dark prismarine: a darker block that uses an ink sac in addition to shards.

Ocean monuments also contain sea lanterns, another prismarine-related block. These provide a bright light source for underwater construction and are made from prismarine resources. Marsh Davies described prismarine as “an attractive building material in itself” in Minecraft’s Block of the Week feature published January 20, 2017.

Prismarine recipes

Prismarine shards are the basic crafting material. The following quantities are the core recipes documented by Minecraft’s official Block of the Week article.

Result Ingredients What the result is good for
Prismarine 4 prismarine shards General blue-green construction and conduit frames
Prismarine bricks 9 prismarine shards Patterned floors, walls, monuments and trim
Dark prismarine 8 prismarine shards plus 1 ink sac Darker accents, roofs, borders and contrast panels

How to plan shard usage

Every four shards become one prismarine block, while a prismarine-brick block consumes nine. Dark prismarine consumes eight shards and one ink sac per block. Decide which variant your build needs before converting a large chest of shards: bricks and dark prismarine consume shards at different rates, and changing your palette later can require another trip to an ocean monument or guardian farm.

Sea lantern resources

Prismarine shards and prismarine crystals are also used in sea-lantern production. Sea lanterns are valuable when you need a bright underwater-themed light source, and monuments often provide existing lanterns that can be collected while you mine. The available recipe information establishes their prismarine-resource ingredients but does not specify a single shard-to-crystal ratio here, so treat naturally generated lanterns as useful finds rather than assuming a particular conversion yield.

Where to find prismarine

Ocean monuments: the main source

Ocean monuments generate in deep ocean biomes and contain large amounts of prismarine, its variants and sea lanterns. If you need enough material for a major build, a monument is the dependable first target. Mining the structure gives finished blocks immediately, avoiding the shard-to-block conversion step.

A cartographer can sell an ocean explorer map that points toward an ocean monument. This is the most directed route when you do not want to search open water at random. The map leads you toward the structure; you still need to travel to the marked area and prepare for an underwater assault.

Ocean ruins: useful, but inconsistent

Underwater ruins can contain prismarine and sea lanterns. Their generation is inconsistent, so ruins are better treated as supplementary sources than as a plan for a large stockpile. They are appropriate when you encounter one during exploration or need a small amount without committing to a monument expedition.

Guardians and elder guardians: renewable shards

Guardians live in ocean monuments. Their drops include prismarine shards and, in some cases, prismarine crystals. Once you have secured a monument, guardian combat provides a repeatable way to gather the ingredients for more blocks and sea lanterns. A guardian farm takes more preparation than simply mining the monument, but it can continue supplying shards, crystals, experience and fish for later construction.

Choose an acquisition method

Your best route depends on whether you need finished blocks now or renewable materials over time.

Method Preparation burden Danger and complications Immediate yield Repeatability
Mine an ocean monument Strong pickaxe, food and underwater support Guardians, elder guardians and Mining Fatigue Large quantity of finished prismarine, variants and sea lanterns Finite structure supply
Defeat guardians manually Monument access and combat preparation Repeated guardian attacks underwater Shards and occasional crystals Repeatable while guardians remain available
Build a guardian farm Substantial construction and monument preparation Complex setup and continued underwater work Renewable shards, crystals, experience and fish Best long-term option
Search ocean ruins Exploration equipment and underwater time Variable generation and limited supply Small or uncertain amounts of prismarine and sea lanterns Unreliable for bulk projects

Choose monument mining if your priority is a finite supply of blocks for one project. Choose a guardian farm if construction will continue for a long time or you also want renewable crystals, experience and fish. Use ruins as a bonus source rather than planning a build around an unguaranteed number of blocks.

Prepare before entering an ocean monument

An ocean monument combines underwater movement, hostile mobs and a mining penalty. Bring the following before you commit to mining the structure:

  • A strong pickaxe: you need it to collect monument blocks efficiently.
  • Food: underwater combat and travel consume time and health.
  • Water-breathing support: bring a way to remain underwater long enough to fight and mine.
  • A guardian-combat plan: decide where you will retreat, heal and store collected blocks.
  • Milk: it can clear Mining Fatigue temporarily.
  • Conduit materials or an activated conduit: a conduit can provide sustained underwater breathing, improved underwater visibility and faster underwater mining once its frame is active.

Why Mining Fatigue matters

Elder guardians apply Mining Fatigue. The effect makes breaking monument blocks much slower, so arriving with only a basic pickaxe and no way to manage the effect can turn a straightforward mining trip into a long, dangerous escape. Milk removes the effect temporarily, but it is a short-term solution; plan your mining sessions around the time you have before the effect returns.

Conduit frame requirements

A conduit frame needs at least 16 prismarine or sea-lantern blocks. The frame can use up to 42 blocks for the full effect. You can therefore begin with the minimum frame when resources are scarce and expand it toward the full configuration after collecting more monument blocks. The conduit is most useful when you intend to work around the monument for an extended period, because its breathing, visibility and mining benefits reduce the pressure to surface repeatedly.

How to find and mine an ocean monument

1. Obtain a destination

Ask a cartographer for an ocean explorer map. The map points toward an ocean monument, giving you a target instead of relying on chance encounters while sailing. Carry enough supplies for the journey and leave room in your inventory for prismarine and sea lanterns.

2. Establish a safe approach

When you reach the marked area, do not immediately strip-mine the exterior. First identify a place where you can surface, store spare supplies or retreat from guardians. Underwater visibility and breathing are limited without dedicated support, so a safe staging point prevents a single missed attack from ending the expedition.

3. Deal with guardian pressure

Guardians defend the monument and can make every mining attempt hazardous. Fight from a position that gives you room to retreat, and avoid staying exposed while your health or breathing supply is low. Elder guardians are the main reason to plan for Mining Fatigue before breaking large sections of the structure.

4. Manage Mining Fatigue

Use milk when you need a temporary window to break blocks, or activate a conduit for sustained underwater support. Because milk is temporary, use that window for a defined task such as opening a route, collecting a room’s blocks or reaching a safer interior position. A conduit is the better long-session solution once you have the frame materials.

5. Mine the structure systematically

Collect the monument’s prismarine, prismarine variants and sea lanterns as you move through it. Work in sections instead of wandering through open water: clear one area, return supplies to your staging point, then continue. This limits the amount you can lose if guardians force a retreat and makes it easier to estimate how much material remains.

6. Decide what to keep intact

Not every lantern or patterned section has to be removed. If the monument will become a base, preserve architectural features and harvest only the blocks needed for your build. If your goal is raw material, mine more aggressively, but remember that a guardian farm may provide a better long-term supply than repeatedly dismantling every decorative surface.

How to use prismarine

Building palettes

Prismarine works as a complete palette rather than a single block. Use standard prismarine for broad blue-green surfaces, prismarine bricks for patterned sections and dark prismarine for borders or visual weight. Combining the three prevents a large underwater build from becoming a single flat color while keeping a coherent ocean theme.

  • Standard prismarine: broad walls, foundations, paths and structural fills.
  • Prismarine bricks: floors, pillars, arches and repeated geometric patterns.
  • Dark prismarine: roofs, frames, corners and high-contrast bands.
  • Sea lanterns: bright lighting integrated into ceilings, floors and navigation routes.

Lighting with sea lanterns

Sea lanterns supply a bright light source that matches prismarine construction. They are especially useful in underwater corridors, monument restorations and submerged farms, where a warm or land-themed light can clash with the surrounding palette. Collect naturally generated lanterns while mining, then supplement them with prismarine resources when you have a reliable shard and crystal supply.

Activating conduits

Prismarine and sea-lantern blocks are the frame materials for a conduit. Start with at least 16 blocks and expand the frame up to 42 blocks for the full effect. Once activated, the conduit supports underwater breathing, improves underwater visibility and speeds underwater mining, making it a practical tool for both monument excavation and large submerged builds.

Guardian farms and megabuilds

A guardian farm connects resource gathering to long-term construction. Guardians provide renewable prismarine shards and, in some cases, crystals, along with experience and fish. Those outputs support repeated crafting of prismarine variants and sea lanterns while giving you a steady experience source for other survival tasks. The setup is more demanding than one monument trip, so it pays off when your project is large or ongoing.

Common problems and fixes

“I found ruins but not enough prismarine.”

That is normal for this method. Ruin generation is inconsistent, and the structures are a supplementary source. Use what you found for a small project, then obtain an ocean explorer map and target a monument for bulk material.

“Mining the monument takes almost no progress.”

An elder guardian has probably applied Mining Fatigue. Drink milk for a temporary clearing, or activate a conduit for sustained breathing, visibility and faster underwater mining. Use the temporary window on a specific section rather than attempting to dismantle the entire monument at once.

“I have shards but cannot make the variant I want.”

Check the shard cost before crafting: standard prismarine needs four shards, prismarine bricks need nine, and dark prismarine needs eight shards plus an ink sac. Keep enough ink sacs if dark prismarine is part of your planned palette.

“I need materials repeatedly, not just once.”

Mine the monument for your initial stock, then consider guardian farming. A farm requires more setup, but it provides a repeatable source of shards and crystals and can also produce experience and fish.

“I cannot stay underwater long enough to finish.”

Improve your water-breathing plan before returning. A conduit with a correctly built frame provides sustained underwater breathing and visibility benefits once activated. Carry food and maintain a retreat route so a guardian attack does not strand you below the surface.

A practical prismarine workflow

  1. Set the project palette: decide how much standard prismarine, prismarine brick, dark prismarine and sea-lantern lighting you want.
  2. Start with exploration: collect any convenient ruin materials, but do not count on ruins for a bulk requirement.
  3. Locate a monument: obtain an ocean explorer map from a cartographer and travel to its marked destination.
  4. Prepare for the effect: bring a strong pickaxe, food, water-breathing support, milk and a guardian-combat plan.
  5. Secure the site: establish a staging point and retreat route before mining.
  6. Harvest systematically: collect finished blocks and sea lanterns in sections, returning supplies as needed.
  7. Build conduit support: use at least 16 prismarine or sea-lantern blocks for the frame, expanding toward 42 when you want the full effect.
  8. Scale up only if necessary: create a guardian farm when your project needs renewable shards, crystals, experience and fish rather than a single finite haul.

How much prismarine should you collect?

There is no universal target because the required amount depends on your design. Use the recipe costs to convert your build plan into a shard requirement: multiply standard prismarine blocks by four, prismarine bricks by nine and dark prismarine by eight, then add one ink sac for each dark prismarine block. Keep conduit-frame blocks separate from decorative stock so you do not accidentally spend the materials needed for underwater support.

For a small accent or repair, a ruin or a few guardian drops may be enough. For a monument restoration, underwater base or megabuild, mine a monument first and switch to guardian farming if the project will continue after the initial structure has been exhausted.

Bottom line

For immediate bulk supplies, follow an ocean explorer map to a monument, prepare for guardians and Mining Fatigue, and mine the structure’s prismarine and sea lanterns. For repeatable materials, use guardian drops and eventually a guardian farm. Craft four shards into prismarine, nine into prismarine bricks, or eight plus an ink sac into dark prismarine; reserve at least 16 prismarine or sea-lantern blocks when you need to activate a conduit.
