“Game Failed to Launch” is a generic message, not a diagnosis. The failure may be caused by damaged files, a broken launcher cache, account authentication, anti-cheat, missing runtimes, graphics drivers, overlays, security software, Windows corruption, or an outage.
Start by checking whether one game fails or every game fails. Then restart Windows, launch the game from the storefront where you bought it, verify its files, clear the relevant launcher cache, and temporarily disable overlays and background tools. These steps fix many launch failures without reinstalling the entire game.
If a game still refuses to launch, Outbyte PC Repair can check related Windows errors, clutter, and settings as an optional troubleshooting step.

Note the exact wording, punctuation, and any error code. “Your game failed to launch. An error on our end caused the launch to fail” is different from “Game Failed to Start (Error Code 80),” so a code-specific support page should take priority over generic advice.
| What happens | Likely area to investigate |
|---|---|
| Only one game fails | Game files, mods, prerequisites, permissions, or anti-cheat |
| Every game in one launcher fails | Launcher cache, account authentication, or platform services |
| Games from every launcher fail | Windows, drivers, security software, storage, or hardware |
| The problem began after an update | Known compatibility issue, driver change, or service outage |
| A splash screen appears and then closes | Drivers, runtimes, overlays, mods, or security software |
| An exact error code appears | The game or launcher’s code-specific documentation |
If only one title fails, begin with file verification, mods, prerequisites, and anti-cheat. If every game fails, focus on the launcher, Windows, drivers, security software, and hardware instead.

1. Restart Windows and check for an outage
- Close the game and launcher.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- End clearly stuck game or launcher processes.
- Restart Windows.
- Check the launcher’s official server-status page, the publisher’s support account, and its known-issues page.
A restart can complete pending launcher, runtime, or anti-cheat installations. Epic notes that some prerequisites, including Visual C++ components, may require a restart before a game runs. Do not repeatedly reinstall during a confirmed outage.
Also launch the game from the platform where it was purchased. A Steam- or Epic-purchased EA title may need to open the EA App for authentication. Avoid an old standalone shortcut, and confirm that the intended accounts are linked.

2. Verify or repair the game files
File verification replaces damaged or missing files, but it cannot repair a broken account link, driver, Windows installation, or platform outage.
Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- When it finishes, restart Steam and try again.
Steam’s labels can change slightly between client revisions; look for the installed-files verification option.
Epic Games Launcher
- Open Library.
- Click the three-dot menu beside the game.
- Select Manage, then Verify.
- Wait for validation to complete before launching.
Epic says verification repairs affected files without deleting saved data: Epic Games file verification.
EA App
Open the game’s Manage menu and choose Repair, if available. For a game purchased through Steam or Epic, verify it in that storefront too, then allow the EA App to finish its repair or update process.

Xbox App, PC Game Pass, Ubisoft Connect, Rockstar, and other launchers
Use the game’s installed-files repair or verification command in the launcher that owns the installation. If the title hands off to a secondary publisher launcher, repair it there as well. The exact menu names vary by launcher version, so use the publisher’s official support instructions when the option is not visible.
3. Clear the launcher cache
Epic Games Launcher
- Exit Epic completely, including its system-tray icon.
- Press Windows + R and enter
%localappdata%. - Open
EpicGamesLauncherSaved. - Delete these folders if present:
webcache,webcache_4147, andwebcache_4430. - Reopen Epic and sign in again.
Epic rebuilds these cache folders when the launcher starts: Epic cache instructions.
EA App
Close the EA App, then use its official App Recovery or Clear Cache option. You may find it by searching the Windows Start menu for EA App Recovery; menu locations can change between revisions. Restart the PC, sign in again, and retry the game.
4. Remove common software conflicts
Temporarily close or disable these tools, then test the game:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Discord, Steam, EA, Epic, NVIDIA, AMD, or Xbox overlays
- Xbox Game Bar
- MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server
- RGB and hardware-monitoring utilities
- Third-party frame-rate limiters and recording software
- VPNs
- Mod managers, injectors, and shader tools
If the game works, re-enable programs one at a time to identify the conflict. Overlay and monitoring conflicts are documented in launch troubleshooting guidance from EA and game support teams.
5. Check antivirus, firewall, and permissions
Check your antivirus quarantine history and Windows Security notifications for a blocked launcher or game executable. If appropriate, add the legitimate launcher and game to a narrowly scoped allow list. Controlled Folder Access can also block a game from writing configuration files.

- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
As a short diagnostic test, disconnect from your VPN and temporarily pause third-party security software. Re-enable protection immediately afterward; do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled.
Also check that:
- The installation drive is connected and has sufficient free space.
- Your account can read and write to the game folder.
- The game is not on an unavailable network or failing external drive.
- The installation path is not unusually long or deeply nested.
Path restrictions are game-specific. Rockstar, for example, documents a particular path-length launch failure for Red Dead Redemption: Rockstar’s error-code documentation.
6. Run the launcher as administrator once
Right-click the launcher shortcut and select Run as administrator. This can diagnose a protected-folder or prerequisite-installation permission problem, but it is not a universal fix. Administrator mode cannot repair corrupted files, authentication, drivers, or anti-cheat services, and permanently running every game this way can create compatibility and security complications.
7. Repair anti-cheat
EA Anti-Cheat
For an EA title that uses EA Anti-Cheat, use the official EA Anti-Cheat installer:
- Open the installer as administrator.
- Select the affected game.
- Choose Repair.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
If repair fails, uninstall the game’s anti-cheat entry, restart, and reinstall it through the official installer or launcher. Do not download replacement anti-cheat files or DLLs from unofficial sites.
Easy Anti-Cheat
For EAC games, verify the files, launch from the correct storefront, repair or reinstall EAC through the game’s official installation, install required Visual C++ components, and close conflicting background applications. Epic’s Easy Anti-Cheat guidance covers this sequence.

8. Update Windows, graphics drivers, and Visual C++
Windows
Open Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates, install normal stable updates, restart, and test. If the failure began immediately after a particular update, record its KB number and check the game’s official issue tracker before considering removal. Do not automatically uninstall ordinary updates or assume an old preview-build report applies to every PC.
Graphics driver
Install the latest stable driver for the exact GPU from the manufacturer:
Restart and test. If the issue began after a driver update, use the installer’s rollback or clean-install option. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities.
Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables
For missing-DLL messages, prerequisite errors, or failed installations, use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ download page. On 64-bit Windows, install both x64 and x86 packages unless the game specifies otherwise. You can also open Settings → Apps → Installed apps, select an existing Visual C++ package, choose Modify, and select Repair.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Older games may need older runtime families. Do not delete every Visual C++ package; multiple versions can coexist and other applications may depend on them.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Restart after both commands finish and test again. Microsoft documents DISM image repair and SFC repair.
10. Remove mods and injected files
If the game worked before a patch or while modded, disable the mod manager and rename the mods folder. Restore the original executable and configuration files, verify the installation, and test an unmodified launch. Anti-cheat or game updates can invalidate previously compatible mods. Back up saves before changing configuration folders, and never delete save files unless the official support instructions require it.
11. Try a clean boot
- Press Windows + R, enter
msconfig, and press Enter. - Open Services.
- Check Hide all Microsoft services.
- Click Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and choose Open Task Manager.
- Disable nonessential startup items.
- Restart and test the game.
If it launches, restore normal startup and re-enable items in groups until the conflicting program is found. Never disable Microsoft services before hiding them, and do not permanently disable security services without understanding the consequences.
12. Reinstall only after targeted repairs fail
Reinstalling a game will not fix an outage, account problem, blocked executable, launcher cache, GPU driver, or Windows corruption. Escalate in this order:
- Repair or reinstall the affected anti-cheat component.
- Repair or reinstall the launcher.
- Reinstall the game only if verification and launcher repair fail.
Before reinstalling, back up local saves, configuration files, screenshots, and mods, and confirm cloud saves have synchronized. Install to a short local path with enough free space. Launch once before restoring mods or overlays.
For a specific Epic prerequisite/self-update failure, Epic documents the launcher argument -SkipBuildPatchPrereq. Use it only when Epic’s instructions match the exact error; it is not a general launch fix.
