The revision has been independently reported in the CFI-2116 Slim, including disc and digital versions. It may help keep the thermal interface more stable, but Sony has not formally announced a PS5 Slim cooling revision, and no independent testing has established a specific improvement in temperatures, fan noise, failure rates, or lifespan.
That makes this a buying consideration—not a reason for healthy owners to replace an older Slim or for anyone to treat vertical placement as inherently unsafe.

What changed inside the PS5 Slim?
The reported change concerns the area where liquid metal transfers heat from the console’s main processor, or APU, to the heatsink. It is not a replacement of liquid metal with ordinary thermal paste, and the evidence does not describe a new “liquid-metal pad.”
Independent teardown reporting found fine grooves, channels, or etched trenches in the liquid-metal contact area of newer Slim hardware. The layout resembles the design Sony described for the PS5 Pro, where engineers said the grooves were added to make cooling more stable. Sony’s PS5 Pro teardown is the official source for that explanation.

A console’s cooling system includes more than its thermal interface: the APU contact area, liquid-metal layer, heatsink mass, heat pipes, fan, airflow path, power-supply cooling, insulation, and containment features all matter. The available evidence identifies a change to the liquid-metal contact/heatsink layout, not a wholesale redesign of every cooling component.
Why use liquid metal?
Liquid metal can transfer heat more effectively than conventional thermal compounds, which is useful for a high-performance processor in a compact console. Sony’s original PS5 teardown identified liquid metal as part of the console’s cooling system.
The material also requires careful engineering. It is electrically conductive and must remain correctly distributed and contained. Potential problems include uneven coverage of the APU, gravity-assisted redistribution over long periods, oxidation or contamination, and liquid metal reaching areas where it could create an electrical risk.
“Liquid-metal leak” is therefore often an imprecise description. A thermal problem may involve migration, oxidation, loss of contact coverage, or contamination rather than liquid escaping from the console altogether. Overheating can also come from dust, blocked vents, a failing fan, a power-supply fault, damaged insulation, or a previous repair.
Which PS5 Slim has the revised layout?
The strongest available identification is CFI-2116. Teardown reporting published in late 2025 associated that model with the grooved layout, based on observations by repair specialist and modder Modyfikator89 and subsequent comparisons. Tom’s Hardware’s report documents the finding.
The reported observation applies to both disc and digital Slim versions, but the exact regional suffix and production batch still matter. Do not assume that every CFI-21xx or CFI-22xx console has the same internal design. Sony’s public support material groups earlier Slim hardware under CFI-2000, while its product information also references CFI-2100 for certain Slim-compatible accessories; those pages do not provide a complete public map of internal cooling revisions. See Sony’s current PS5 product information for the published model-group details.
In practical terms:
- Reported: CFI-2116 units have been found with the revised grooved layout.
- Not established: Every CFI-2100 or CFI-2200 unit uses it.
- Not established: Every regional equivalent of CFI-2116 is internally identical.
- Not guaranteed: A retailer’s “2026 model,” bundle name, or manufacturing date alone confirms the heatsink design.
How to check your PS5 model number
Sony says the model number is a CFI-prefixed identifier. You can check it in two ways:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Rank #2
- Look at the bottom of the console when it is positioned vertically. The model number is printed there.
- On the console, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information.
The complete model number—not simply “PS5 Slim”—is the useful information when comparing stock. Sony’s model-number support page shows where to find it. If you are buying online, ask the seller for a clear photograph of the label or packaging and confirm that the return policy covers a mismatch.
Does the revision make the PS5 Slim run cooler?
There is no verified temperature figure. The grooves have a plausible engineering purpose: they may help distribute or retain liquid metal more evenly and make the thermal interface less sensitive to redistribution. Sony’s PS5 Pro explanation supports that rationale, but it is not a controlled test of the PS5 Slim.
The available Slim reporting demonstrates a physical design difference, not a measured before-and-after result. It does not establish:
- average APU or hotspot temperature;
- fan speed or acoustic output;
- power consumption;
- performance during a fixed game workload;
- long-term failure rates;
- behavior in vertical and horizontal orientations;
- performance in dusty environments or hot rooms.

Is this Sony’s response to a PS5 liquid-metal defect?
It is safer to describe the revision as a design-risk mitigation than as a confirmed response to a widespread defect. Sony has not publicly announced that older Slim consoles contain a systemic fault, and the available evidence does not establish a failure rate requiring a recall or universal repair.
The revised layout may reduce the tendency of the thermal interface to redistribute, but “prevents liquid-metal migration” would be too strong. It also cannot prevent overheating caused by blocked airflow, dust, a defective fan, a power-supply problem, damaged hardware, or an incorrect repair.
Nor does the evidence show that a PS5 used vertically will inevitably develop a problem. Sony sells a vertical stand and provides guidance for both orientations. The relevant precautions are correct support, adequate clearance, and ventilation—not a blanket ban on vertical operation. Sony’s setup guidance explains the appropriate horizontal feet for the CFI-2000 Slim: PS5 setup instructions.
Should existing PS5 Slim owners replace their console?
No—not merely because the console has an earlier model number. Keep using an older Slim if it runs games normally, does not show overheating warnings, does not shut down under load, and has reasonable fan behavior in a well-ventilated location.

Do not open a functioning console for preventive liquid-metal replacement. Liquid-metal work requires suitable electronics-repair experience, correct cleaning and application, intact insulation and containment, and careful reassembly. A repair can create new problems through excess material, scratched contact surfaces, missing insulation, pinched cables, or incorrect screw torque.

What to check if your PS5 overheats
Diagnose the obvious causes before assuming the liquid-metal interface is at fault:
- Check ventilation. Keep vents unobstructed and leave about 10 cm of free space around the console.
- Move it off carpet or long-fiber rugs. Avoid narrow shelves, enclosed cabinets, and cramped spaces.
- Remove dust safely. Disconnect AC power first and follow Sony’s guidance for cleaning vents with a low-powered vacuum.
- Observe the pattern. A console that works at the home screen but shuts down during demanding games may have a load-related thermal or power problem.
- Consider other causes. Check fan operation, system software, game-specific behavior, prior repair damage, and the power supply before pursuing liquid-metal service.
- Use qualified service. Repeated overheating warnings, unexpected shutdowns, newly severe fan noise, or instability under load justify contacting Sony or a reputable repair professional.
Sony notes that the fan can temporarily become louder during some games and applications, so a brief increase in fan noise is not automatically evidence of failure. Its ventilation and noise guidance is available at Sony Support.
Can the PS5 Slim be used vertically?
Yes, provided it is installed correctly. Use the appropriate stand or feet for the chosen orientation, place the console on a stable hard surface, and maintain ventilation clearance. Do not put it in an enclosed cabinet, and do not treat the revised grooved layout as a guarantee against every thermal problem.
The new design may improve the stability of the liquid-metal interface, but it does not eliminate heat, dust, mechanical stress, fan failure, or power-supply faults. A vertical console is not automatically defective, and a horizontal console is not automatically protected from overheating.

If two otherwise comparable consoles cost the same and the model number is confirmed, choosing the newer reported revision is reasonable. It offers the latest known internal design and may be preferable for buyers planning long-term ownership.

Do not pay a substantial premium solely for an unverified claim that the console is cooler, quieter, or immune to liquid-metal problems. A discounted earlier Slim with a valid warranty, return policy, and good ventilation may be the better value.
When comparing listings, check:
- the exact CFI model number;
- disc or digital configuration;
- storage capacity and included accessories;
- warranty region and seller legitimacy;
- return and exchange terms;
- whether the vertical stand or horizontal feet are included;
- whether an imported, open-box, or refurbished unit has an identifiable production batch.
Sony’s US product page distinguishes the 1TB disc-equipped console from the 825GB digital edition and identifies compatible Slim model groups for the optional disc drive. Official retail or certified-refurbished stock can provide a clearer warranty and return path, but an official listing does not by itself guarantee a particular CFI-2116 batch. What the revision does—and does not—prove
The strongest conclusion is narrow: newer PS5 Slim units, particularly those identified as CFI-2116, appear to have adopted a grooved liquid-metal contact design similar to the PS5 Pro’s. Sony has said that grooves on the Pro are intended to make cooling more stable.
That is meaningful physical evidence, but it is not proof of a measured temperature reduction or a lower failure rate. It does not establish that every later Slim model shares the design, that older Slim consoles are unsafe, or that vertical placement causes liquid-metal failure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every PS5 Slim have the new grooved liquid-metal design?
No. The clearest independent reporting identifies CFI-2116 units, but Sony has not published a complete model-by-model or regional mapping of the internal cooling revision.
Should I replace an older PS5 Slim?
Not if it is working normally, stays ventilated, and shows no overheating warnings or load-related shutdowns. The available evidence does not justify preventive replacement.

Is vertical PS5 Slim placement unsafe?
There is no evidence supporting that blanket claim. Use the correct stand, a stable hard surface, and adequate ventilation.
