If GTA Online says “Files required to play GTA Online could not be downloaded from the Rockstar Games Service,” first check your console’s internet connection and Rockstar’s service status. Rockstar says the error means communication failed between Rockstar Games Services and your connection’s IP address; the message alone does not show that your game files are corrupted or that your account is banned. If services are available, try restarting your router, clearing the console cache, and then changing DNS using the instructions for your console.
What causes the “Files Required to Play” error?
Rockstar Games Customer Support describes the message as a communication issue between Rockstar Games Services and the player’s connection IP address. It does not, by itself, diagnose a damaged game installation or an account ban. Rockstar’s error-specific articles for PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S were last updated May 1, 2024.
There is no published success rate for the suggested fixes, so treat them as troubleshooting attempts rather than guaranteed solutions.
Check your connection and Rockstar’s service status
Confirm that your console is connected to the internet, then check Rockstar Games Service Status for a GTA Online outage or maintenance. The status page showed GTA Online operational on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC at 05:36 UTC on October 8, 2026. That is only a snapshot; check the live page when the error occurs.

Try Rockstar’s console troubleshooting steps
- Restart your router. Unplug it for about 10 minutes, reconnect it, then restart the game and check whether the message has cleared.
- Clear the console cache. Turn the console off and unplug it from power. Wait two minutes, reconnect it, and turn it back on.
- Change DNS using the instructions for your console below. Rockstar lists this as a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix.
Xbox Series X|S
Open Home > Settings > Network Settings > Advanced Settings > DNS Settings > Manual. Enter 8.8.8.8 as the Primary DNS and 8.8.4.4 as the Secondary DNS, then confirm.
PS5
Open Home > Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection. Highlight your current Wi-Fi or LAN connection, press Options, and choose Advanced Settings. Set DNS Settings to Manual, enter 8.8.8.8 as Primary DNS and 8.8.4.4 as Secondary DNS, then confirm.

PS4
Open Home > Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection. Choose Wi-Fi or LAN, select Custom, keep IP Address Settings on Automatic and DHCP Host Name on Do Not Specify, then set DNS to Manual and follow the remaining on-screen steps. Rockstar’s captured instructions specify MTU Settings as Automatic and Proxy Server as Do Not Use, but do not expose the DNS address values. Check Rockstar’s current PS4 instructions rather than assuming the values listed for another console.
Xbox One
Rockstar’s service-status page lists GTA Online for Xbox One, but its reviewed error-specific instructions cover Xbox Series X|S, not Xbox One. If you try the Series X|S route, treat it as a possible starting point, not a verified Xbox One procedure; menu names may differ. Contact Rockstar Support if the instructions do not match your console.

If the error persists
Submit a request to Rockstar Support if the connection is working, service status shows no relevant outage, and the troubleshooting steps have not helped. Include your platform, the exact error message, and which steps you tried. Rockstar’s error-specific guidance does not list deleting saved data or reinstalling the game as first-line steps.
