Short answer: The WordPress “HTTP error” during an image upload usually means the server could not finish processing the file, rather than that your browser failed to send it. Start with a smaller, simply named image and a fresh upload attempt. If that fails, identify whether WordPress is using Imagick or GD, then check PHP memory and execution-time limits, test GD, isolate plugins and themes, and ask your host to inspect security rules and server logs. The exact menu labels and effective limits vary by WordPress, PHP and hosting configuration.

What the WordPress HTTP upload error actually means
WordPress accepts the file, then asks a PHP image editor to read it, create the required sizes and write the generated files into the uploads directory. The generic HTTP message appears when that server-side work times out, runs out of memory, is blocked by a security layer, or cannot write the result. It can therefore appear even when the original file transferred successfully.

Two messages often describe the same failure: “HTTP error.” and “The server cannot process the image.” Neither message identifies the root cause. The useful clues are the image dimensions, the active editor (Imagick or GD), PHP limits, plugin behavior and entries in the web-server or PHP error log.
There is no published prevalence figure for this error, and WordPress, PHP and ImageMagick behavior changes with versions and host defaults. Treat each fix below as a diagnostic step: make one change, retry with the same file, and record whether the result changes.

Do the low-risk checks first
- Refresh the WordPress admin page. Sign in again if the session expired, then retry the upload.
- Use the browser uploader. In Media > Add New, switch from drag-and-drop to the file-selection control. This separates a JavaScript or drop-zone problem from server processing.
- Clear relevant caches. Clear the browser cache and any page or security cache that could be serving an old admin script.
- Rename the file. Use letters, numbers, hyphens or underscores only, for example
product-photo-01.jpg. Avoid accents, emoji, brackets, ampersands and very long names. - Reduce the file before uploading. Export a JPEG or PNG at a smaller pixel size and remove unnecessary layers. A smaller file lowers both transfer time and the memory needed to decode it.
- Try another ordinary image. A small camera JPEG or a basic PNG tells you whether the failure is tied to one file. Do not delete the original until the test is complete.
If a small, plainly named image succeeds while the original fails, continue with the size, metadata and image-editor checks rather than changing WordPress code immediately.
Find out which image editor WordPress is using
WordPress normally delegates image work to either Imagick, the PHP extension backed by ImageMagick, or GD, the alternative PHP graphics library. The active editor and its version are exposed in the media diagnostics or debugging information available in your installation. If you cannot find that information, ask your host which editor is loaded for the PHP version serving wp-admin.
This distinction matters because a broken or restricted Imagick installation is a recurring explanation for HTTP upload failures reported by WordPress core developers. GD can be slower or offer fewer image features, but switching to it is a useful test: if the same file works with GD, the file and WordPress Media Library are less likely to be the problem and the Imagick configuration deserves attention.
Raise PHP resources carefully
Large images need memory to decode the compressed source and to hold one or more uncompressed pixel buffers while WordPress creates thumbnails. A request can also fail when image processing exceeds PHP’s execution-time limit. A common WordPress-level test is to add this line to wp-config.php:
define( 'WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M' );Place it before the line that says That's all, stop editing! (or its equivalent), and make a backup before editing. Use the exact spelling and punctuation. This constant is a WordPress request, not a guarantee: the hosting account, PHP pool or container may enforce a lower cap, and a host-level limit can override it.

One support case reported no improvement from the WordPress constant. In that case, changing PHP settings in a .user.ini file fixed the request:

max_execution_time = 120The values above are an example of that reported configuration, not a universal requirement. A host may disallow per-directory PHP settings, apply them only after a delay, or require a PHP-FPM reload. If the file is ignored, do not keep increasing numbers; ask the host which memory_limit and max_execution_time apply to wp-admin and whether an account cap is blocking the change.
After changing a limit, retry the same image. If the error changes to a different message, save that message and check the PHP error log before making another change.
Test GD as a controlled fallback
When Imagick is installed but misconfigured, forcing GD for one test can confirm the diagnosis. Add the following filter temporarily in the active theme’s functions.php or, preferably, a small site-specific plugin:

} );Only use this if the GD PHP extension is actually installed. Make a backup first, and remove the filter after testing if you do not want GD to remain the default. If the site produces a fatal error or reports that the GD editor is unavailable, restore the backup or remove the snippet and have the host enable GD.

If the image uploads successfully with GD, leave the filter in place only after checking the site’s image quality and processing speed. Otherwise, ask the host to repair or reinstall the Imagick PHP extension for the PHP version used by WordPress. A successful GD test does not prove that every Imagick operation is broken; it shows that the current Imagick path is the most useful place to investigate.
Limit Imagick threads on shared hosting
ImageMagick can create worker threads while processing a large file. On some shared hosts, that can collide with account limits and end in a generic HTTP error. After making a copy of .htaccess, a commonly suggested test is:
SetEnv MAGICK_THREAD_LIMIT 1Add it in the appropriate server configuration location for your host, then retry the image. Not every server permits this directive, and a syntax error in .htaccess can take the whole site offline. If the site returns a server error after saving the file, restore the backup immediately and ask the host to apply an equivalent ImageMagick thread limit at the server level.
Rule out plugins and the theme
Image-optimization, compression, gallery, backup and security plugins can hook into the upload request. A theme can also add filters to the image-editor list. To isolate that code:

- Upload the test image again.
- If it works, reactivate plugins one at a time, uploading the same test image after each activation.
- When the error returns, check that plugin’s settings, update it, or contact its developer with the exact PHP and WordPress versions and the server-log entry.
- If the error remains with every plugin disabled, switch temporarily to a current default WordPress theme. Restore the original theme after the test.
Do not leave security or optimization plugins disabled on a production site without a replacement plan. The purpose of the test is to identify the conflicting component, not to run permanently without protection.

Check mod_security and other security layers
Web-application firewalls can reject multipart uploads, image metadata or requests that exceed a rule’s size or execution threshold. A temporary security-rule disablement can confirm this, but it should be performed by the host or in a controlled maintenance window. Never leave a firewall disabled as the fix. Give the host the failing filename, approximate upload time, account domain and the response shown by WordPress, and ask for a narrow whitelist of the WordPress upload process or rule exception.
Verify the uploads path and filesystem access
WordPress must be able to create files in its uploads directory and in the year/month subdirectories it uses. In the dashboard, open Settings > Media and inspect the upload-location setting. If a custom path is stale or points outside the account, restore the default path where your WordPress version offers that option, then save and retry.
The directory also needs to be writable by the PHP user. Do not guess at permission numbers or make the entire site world-writable. Ask the host to check ownership, permissions, disk quota and inode quota for the uploads directory. A full disk or an ownership mismatch can produce the same generic message as an image-editor failure.
Finally, confirm that the site is running a currently supported PHP version for its WordPress release. If the host recently changed PHP versions, the Imagick or GD extension may be missing from the new PHP runtime even though it existed on the old one.

These examples illustrate why the PHP upload-size setting alone is not a complete diagnosis: decoding and thumbnail generation can fail after the file has already passed the upload-size check.

Use FTP and WP-CLI only as a workaround
If browser uploads remain blocked but you have SSH access, copy the file into a location readable by the server and register it with WP-CLI:
wp media import /path/to/image.jpgRun the command from the WordPress installation or provide the correct site context for a multisite. The command imports the file into the Media Library; it does not repair Imagick, PHP limits, permissions or security rules. If thumbnail generation fails during the import, the underlying server problem still needs to be fixed. Keep the original file and the command output so your host can correlate it with the server log.

When to contact your host
Escalate once you have tried a small renamed image and can state which editor is active. Hosting support can see PHP and web-server logs that WordPress does not expose in the dashboard, and it can verify account-level memory, execution-time, disk, Imagick/GD and mod_security settings. Include the exact error text, image dimensions and format, approximate time of failure, WordPress and PHP versions, and whether GD succeeded when tested. Ask the host to make the narrowest change that fixes the request, then re-enable any temporarily disabled security control.
Prevent the error from returning
- Resize very large photographs before uploading rather than relying on WordPress to decode the camera original.
- Use predictable filenames without special characters.
- Keep WordPress, PHP, the active theme and image-related plugins updated together.
- Monitor disk and inode quotas, especially on shared hosting.
- Document any host-level PHP or ImageMagick settings so a PHP-version change does not silently remove them.
- Keep a tested GD fallback plan, but do not force it permanently without checking image quality and processing time.
The fastest reliable path is to identify the editor, reproduce the error with a controlled small file, and then let the evidence choose between resource limits, Imagick/GD configuration, plugin code, security rules and filesystem access. Randomly increasing every limit often obscures the real fault and can leave a site less secure.
