Menagerie is a zoo-building, light-questing, building and exploration modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1 using Forge. The current listed client file is Menagerie2.4.zip, while multiplayer administrators should use MenagerieRelease2.4ServerFiles.zip. Install the exact Forge and Minecraft versions shown by the project, keep every player’s pack files synchronized, and read the server archive’s own README or startup files for RAM, ports and launch settings because those values are not published in the project listing.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.

Menagerie is not a general-purpose mod collection that can be opened with any recent Minecraft version, and it is not a Fabric pack. The supported combination identified by the project is Minecraft 1.20.1 plus Forge. The CurseForge listing showed 137,949 downloads on a 2026 page crawl and an update date of October 20, 2025. A download counter is a measure of file downloads, not a concurrent-player count, a performance benchmark or a guarantee that all downloads use the newest release. Before installing, check the project page’s file list for a newer release and make sure the client and server files belong to the same pack version.
#1 Best Overall
Choose how you will play
Your installation path depends on whether you need a local client, a persistent server, or a provider-managed world.
| Option | Best for | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Client-only play | Solo building, exploration and testing | Fastest setup; no port forwarding, server process or administrator duties | No shared persistent world unless another player hosts one |
| Self-hosted dedicated server | A household, private group or technically confident administrator | Control over world files, backups, permissions, ports and upgrades | You must install Forge, maintain Java and files, secure the port, and keep the server running |
| Managed hosting | Groups that want an always-available server without maintaining a machine | Provider handles much of deployment and uptime administration; the CurseForge hosted workflow documents Shockbyte as its provider | Recurring cost, provider-specific controls and less direct control over the host system |
Whichever option you choose, compare the same five questions before inviting players: does it support Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge, can it deploy the published server pack, what control do you have over backups and files, how many players can the plan or machine realistically support, and where will you obtain technical support?

- A Minecraft Java Edition installation that can create a 1.20.1 profile.
- A launcher that supports importing or installing a CurseForge modpack ZIP.
- The Forge loader selected for Minecraft 1.20.1.
- The exact client file,
Menagerie2.4.zip, from the project’s official file listing. - Sufficient disk space for the launcher instance, downloaded libraries, configuration files and your world. The project listing does not state a fixed size requirement.
- For multiplayer, an administrator who can install the server files, accept the EULA, manage backups and provide an address and port.
Close Minecraft and the launcher before changing an existing profile. Keeping the pack in its own instance prevents unrelated mods, resource packs or configuration files from contaminating Menagerie.
How to install Menagerie on a client
- Create or select a Minecraft 1.20.1 profile. In your launcher, create a separate instance for Menagerie rather than modifying a profile used by another pack.
- Select Forge for the same game version. The profile must show Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge together. A Forge loader for another Minecraft release is not an equivalent substitute.
- Import the published pack. Use the launcher’s modpack import or installation control and choose
Menagerie2.4.zipdownloaded from the official project file listing. Do not unzip and selectively copy random mods unless the project author documents that procedure. - Allow the launcher to finish downloading dependencies. Keep the instance’s folder separate and do not edit its mod list while installation is in progress.
- Launch once. Wait for the Forge loading screen and the Menagerie main menu. The first run may create configuration directories and take longer than later launches.
- Check the pack before creating a shared world. Confirm that the title screen loads without a missing-mod error, then create a temporary test world and check that the quest and zoo-building content appears.
- Record the installed version. Every player joining a shared server should install the same Menagerie release and the same Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge profile.
Do not combine the published pack with a Fabric profile, another Minecraft version or a manually edited mod list unless the author specifically documents that variation. The loader and game version are part of the pack’s compatibility contract.
Client installation errors and fixes
“Incompatible mod” or “missing dependency”
First open the instance settings and verify both values: Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge. If either value differs, create a clean profile and import the pack again. CurseForge’s compatibility guidance treats the game version and mod loader as linked requirements; changing one without the other can prevent the pack from starting.
The launcher opens vanilla Minecraft
Check that you launched the Menagerie instance rather than the default profile. A successful Forge installation normally displays Forge information on the title screen. If the profile selector reverted to a vanilla instance, reselect the imported pack and launch it again.
Rank #3
- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
A previous mod or configuration is interfering
Make a new Menagerie instance instead of deleting individual files from an old one. Manual removal can leave configuration references behind and makes it difficult to determine which file caused the failure. Reapply only documented changes after a clean launch succeeds.
The game crashes during the first launch
Save the crash report and launcher log, then check the selected Java runtime, available memory and the exact Forge/Minecraft pair. The Menagerie listing does not publish a minimum-RAM figure, so do not treat an internet recommendation as an official requirement. If a clean instance still fails, compare the error’s mod name and version with the files included in the downloaded pack.
Set up a Menagerie dedicated server
The supported starting point is MenagerieRelease2.4ServerFiles.zip. The archive is more authoritative for launch scripts and configuration than a generic Minecraft server tutorial, so read its included README and inspect its files before changing anything.
Rank #4
- Now Minecraft lovers can play a special version of UNO!
- Same as Basic UNO but features Minecraft characters and includes special Creeper rule card. Draw this card and the other players have to draw three more cards from the pile!
- The goal is to get rid of all the cards in your hand.
- First player or team to 500 wins.
- When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!
- Create a clean server directory. Use a folder dedicated to this Menagerie world. Do not extract the archive over another modpack or an existing vanilla server.
- Download and extract the server pack. Obtain
MenagerieRelease2.4ServerFiles.zipfrom the official file listing and extract all contents into the new directory, preserving subfolders. - Install the expected Forge server runtime. Follow the archive’s supplied startup script or README. If the package includes a Forge installer, use the version it specifies rather than guessing from a different release.
- Inspect launch files before starting. Look for the included start script, Java command, memory flags, server port, and any pack-specific notes. The public project listing does not state exact RAM, startup flags, port or configuration differences.
- Start the server once. Run the supplied script or command from the server directory so relative paths resolve correctly. Let it generate its initial files and stop it cleanly if it asks for an EULA change.
- Accept the Minecraft EULA. Open the generated EULA file, read the terms, and change the acceptance value only if you agree. Save the file and start the server again.
- Wait for a ready state. Use the server console’s completion message as the indication that the world is ready. A window that remains open while the server is still generating files is not necessarily ready for players.
- Set administration and networking. Record the address and port shown or configured by the server files. If friends connect over the internet, configure firewall and router forwarding for that port and restrict administrative access to trusted users.
- Make a backup before inviting players. Stop the server cleanly, copy the world and relevant configuration files, and label the backup with the pack version and date.
Do not publish a guessed port or RAM value in your setup notes. Use the values present in the downloaded archive and your hosting environment. The listing confirms that the server pack exists, but it does not expose those operational settings.
Prepare clients to join the server
- Have each player install the Menagerie client pack using the client procedure above.
- Verify that every player is on Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge and the same Menagerie release as the server.
- Give players the server address and port exactly as configured. A local address works only on the same network; remote players need the host’s reachable address and an allowed firewall rule.
- Have one player connect first. Check that the server console records a successful login and that the player can load into the world.
- If the first connection works, invite the remaining players. Keep a copy of the server log if a particular client fails; version and mod-list differences are easier to diagnose from the disconnect message than from a generic launcher error.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosting on your own computer
Self-hosting is appropriate when you want direct access to world files and can leave the machine online. You control backups, operator permissions, configuration edits and when to update. You also assume responsibility for Java updates, operating-system security, firewall rules, router configuration, crash recovery and storage. A server that runs only while your computer is on is not continuously available to friends.
Using a managed provider
CurseForge’s hosted-server documentation describes a workflow powered by Shockbyte and indicates that a modpack with a matching server pack can be deployed through that process. This can remove much of the manual extraction and networking work. Confirm that the service currently accepts Menagerie 1.20.1 Forge and the published server pack, then check its backup controls, file manager, player limits, support scope and renewal price before ordering. Provider settings can differ from the archive’s local startup script.
Best Value
Choosing between them
- Choose self-hosting when file control, custom backups and low recurring cost matter more than convenience.
- Choose managed hosting when friends need an always-available world and nobody wants to maintain a home server.
- For either choice, keep an offline backup before changing mods, configs or the Minecraft version.
Memory, Java and capacity: what is known
The project listing does not publish a minimum or recommended RAM amount, a supported player count, a Java version, a startup command or a benchmark. Those omissions do not mean the server has no requirements; they mean the authoritative values must be read from the server archive and the runtime instructions for your installation.
Use the archive’s launch script as the baseline. If it specifies Java options, preserve them while troubleshooting. Watch the console for repeated tick delays, out-of-memory errors or a steadily growing process size, and change one setting at a time. Increasing memory cannot fix a wrong Forge version, a corrupted world or a missing dependency. For a managed plan, ask the provider which Java runtime and memory allocation they assign to a 1.20.1 Forge server and whether the published server pack is supported without manual modification.
Backups, updates and safe maintenance
Back up before changes
Stop the server cleanly before copying the world directory. Keep at least one backup away from the live server machine, and label it with the Menagerie version, Minecraft version and date. Test that a backup can actually be restored to a separate directory before relying on it.
Update deliberately
Check the project’s file listing for a new client and server release rather than updating individual mods from unrelated sources. Read release notes or archive documentation, back up the world, update the server files, then update every client to the same release. Never assume that a newer Minecraft version is compatible merely because it is also supported by Forge.
Protect the world
- Grant operator privileges only to trusted administrators.
- Keep the server port closed to the public internet unless remote play requires it.
- Do not overwrite the only world copy during an upgrade.
- Keep logs from the first successful start and from any failed update so you can compare changes.
Fast troubleshooting checklist
| Symptom | Most useful first check |
|---|---|
| Client refuses to start | Confirm Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge are selected in the same profile; then retry with a clean imported instance. |
| Server stops immediately | Read the supplied startup script, Java error and EULA status; do not replace the command with a generic one until those are checked. |
| Player is rejected while others connect | Compare that player’s Minecraft version, Forge loader and Menagerie pack release with the server. |
| Friends cannot see the server | Verify the server is listening, the address and port are correct, and the host firewall/router permits the connection. |
| World disappears after an update | Stop the server and restore the pre-update backup; never continue experimenting on the only copy. |
What to verify before inviting friends
- The client and server release names match:
Menagerie2.4.zipandMenagerieRelease2.4ServerFiles.zip, unless the project lists a newer matching pair. - All clients show Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.
- The server has completed a clean start and EULA acceptance.
- The actual port and address come from the server configuration or hosting panel, not a copied tutorial.
- A tested backup exists.
- Players know whether they are connecting locally or over the internet and have the correct address format.
Bottom line
Install Menagerie as a dedicated Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge instance using Menagerie2.4.zip. For multiplayer, extract MenagerieRelease2.4ServerFiles.zip into a clean directory, follow its included Forge startup instructions, accept the EULA, and use the archive to determine Java, RAM and port settings. A self-hosted server gives maximum control; CurseForge’s documented managed workflow offers a simpler route through its Shockbyte-powered hosting integration. In every case, matching versions and disciplined backups are more important than guessed performance settings.
