In practice, the message is a useful working diagnosis: Minecraft cannot currently validate the Microsoft identity or license/service session required by the Launcher.

Common causes include:
- The Launcher is signed into a different Microsoft account from the one that owns Minecraft.
- The Microsoft Store and Xbox app are using different accounts from the Launcher.
- The Xbox or Microsoft Store sign-in session has expired or become stuck.
- The Minecraft Launcher installation or Microsoft Store cache is damaged.
- Gaming Services or another Xbox dependency is missing, outdated, or malfunctioning.
- Microsoft, Xbox, or a connected service is experiencing an outage.
- The Microsoft account itself is locked, compromised, or unable to complete sign-in.
The steps below are designed to distinguish those causes without deleting worlds or making unnecessarily destructive changes.
1. Confirm which Microsoft account owns Minecraft
Before repairing Windows apps or buying anything, identify the account that actually owns the game.
- Open Minecraft Launcher and inspect the account name or profile shown in the upper-left corner.
- Open the Microsoft Store and select the account icon. Note the email address or account identity shown there.
- Open the Xbox app for Windows and inspect its profile and signed-in account.
- Compare the actual account identities in all three apps. Do not rely only on a familiar display name or gamertag.
- Verify ownership using the Microsoft account’s order history or the original Minecraft purchase-confirmation email.
The Windows login account, a family member’s Microsoft account, an old Mojang-era email address, and the current Xbox account are not necessarily the same identity. The account that owns the PC license is the one that must be used for the license-related Launcher check.
If you do not own the PC edition on the Microsoft account you intend to use, check the Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition for PC listing. Purchasing the game is relevant only when that account genuinely does not own it; it will not repair an account mismatch, expired session, or service outage.
2. Match the account in Minecraft Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox
For normal license and authentication troubleshooting, the clearest test is to use the same owning Microsoft account in all three applications.
Change the account in Minecraft Launcher
- Open Minecraft Launcher.
- Select the Launcher username or profile in the upper-left corner.
- Choose View all accounts.
- Select Switch Account.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account confirmed to own Minecraft.
Some users intentionally keep different accounts in the Launcher and Store, and the Launcher may allow that arrangement. However, when diagnosing an authentication or license error, temporarily matching the accounts removes the most common source of ambiguity.

Correct the Xbox app account
Open the Xbox app, choose its profile area, and confirm both the displayed gamertag and the Microsoft account identity. If the wrong account is shown, use the app’s option to sign in with a different account instead of repeatedly entering credentials only in Minecraft Launcher.
3. Sign in through Xbox, then restart the authentication chain
Minecraft’s Windows sign-in guidance recommends signing into the Xbox app before signing into Minecraft. This can refresh the identity session shared by Xbox-connected Microsoft apps.
- Close Minecraft and Minecraft Launcher.
- Open the Xbox app and sign in with the verified owning account.
- Confirm that the expected gamertag and account are displayed.
- Close the Xbox app.
- Close Microsoft Store and any other Minecraft-related Microsoft app.
- Restart Windows.
- After Windows starts, open the Xbox app and Microsoft Store first.
- Confirm the correct account is active, then launch Minecraft.
This is a low-risk refresh. It does not delete worlds, reinstall Windows, or remove the game.

4. Repair Minecraft Launcher in Windows
Windows includes a built-in repair option for supported apps. Use Repair before Reset because Repair is less disruptive.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Minecraft Launcher.
- Select the three-dot menu next to it and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Reopen the Launcher and test the verified account.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Select Minecraft Launcher.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Repair, then test Minecraft again.
If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset. Reset can remove app data or settings for supported apps, so it may require you to sign in again. It is not the same as resetting Windows, but you should still use it only after Repair and account checks.
5. Reset the Microsoft Store cache with WSReset
A damaged Store cache can leave Microsoft apps behaving as though the account session is invalid.

- Type
wsreset.exe. - Select OK.
- Wait while a blank Command Prompt window appears and closes or remains open briefly.
- Microsoft Store should open automatically when the reset completes.
- In the Store, confirm that the correct Microsoft account is active.
- Reopen Xbox and Minecraft Launcher, then test again.
Do not interrupt the process simply because the Command Prompt window looks blank. The Store opening automatically is the expected completion signal.

6. Use Gaming Services Repair Tool for dependency or update failures
Use the Xbox Gaming Services Repair Tool when the Launcher will not update, Gaming Services appears to be missing or broken, or the Xbox/Microsoft Store dependency chain is clearly malfunctioning.
This is not the first step for every authentication prompt. Gaming Services cannot grant ownership or make the wrong Microsoft account own Minecraft. Run it after checking account alignment, particularly when you also see symptoms such as:
- Minecraft Launcher updates repeatedly fail.
- Gaming Services is missing, cannot start, or produces an installation error.
- The Xbox app or Microsoft Store cannot install or update related components.
- The Launcher reports a problem involving Xbox services or required Windows gaming components.
Open the Xbox app or the relevant Microsoft Gaming Services support area and run the available Gaming Services Repair Tool. Follow its prompts, restart Windows if requested, and then sign into Xbox and Minecraft again.

7. Check for a Microsoft, Xbox, or connected-service outage
Before repeatedly changing local settings, check the official service-status resources for Xbox and connected Minecraft services, including PlayFab where applicable. Minecraft’s troubleshooting guidance specifically points users toward checking Xbox and/or PlayFab service availability.

An outage becomes more plausible when:
- The same account works on Microsoft’s website but fails in several Microsoft-connected games or apps.
- Other Xbox-connected services are also failing.
- The error began suddenly without a local account, Windows, or Launcher change.
- Multiple devices show the same authentication problem.
Service status is time-sensitive. Do not state that an outage is occurring unless the current official status page confirms one. If an incident is active, wait for recovery rather than deleting Minecraft data, resetting Windows, or repeatedly changing account settings. This is a diagnostic inference, not a guarantee that every broad-looking symptom is caused by an outage.
8. Reinstall the official Minecraft Launcher only after backing up worlds
Reinstallation can refresh damaged Launcher files, but it cannot fix an account that does not own Minecraft or bypass an active Microsoft service outage.
Back up worlds first
Back up your Minecraft worlds and other save data before uninstalling or resetting Minecraft-related software. The exact save location depends on the edition and installation method, and cloud synchronization should not be treated as the only copy. If a world matters, make a separate copy of its save folder or use the edition’s in-game export/backup option where available.
Reinstall from an official source
Uninstall Minecraft Launcher through Windows Settings, then reinstall it using the Microsoft Store or the official Minecraft download page. Avoid unofficial Launcher installers and tools that ask for your Microsoft password. After installation:
- Open Xbox and sign in with the verified owning account.
- Open Minecraft Launcher.

Java Edition follow-up: create a clean installation
If authentication now succeeds but Java Edition crashes or still fails to launch, create a clean Java installation. This is a later launch-crash diagnostic, not the primary fix for an authentication prompt.
- Open Minecraft Launcher and select Java Edition.
- Open Installations.
- Select New installation.
- Choose the relevant Minecraft game version.
- Save the installation and launch it without the old profile’s optional settings.
A clean installation can help isolate a damaged prior installation, incompatible mods, unusual resolution settings, or custom JVM arguments. Add mods and custom arguments back one at a time after the clean profile works.

9. Recover the Microsoft account if sign-in fails everywhere
If you cannot authenticate to the Microsoft account outside Minecraft, stop troubleshooting the Launcher and use Microsoft’s official Sign-in Helper and account-recovery process.
This is the appropriate branch for a forgotten password, locked account, suspicious activity, or a sign-in challenge that fails on Microsoft’s own services. Do not:
- Share your password with another person or a third-party “support” tool.
- Disable security protections to force a login.
- Try to bypass Microsoft authentication.
- Buy a second copy before establishing which account owns Minecraft.
