When Minecraft shows Connection closed – mismatched mod channel list, the Forge client and server failed their network-channel handshake before you entered the world. The reliable fix is to match the Minecraft version, Forge build, mod files and launch folders, then use debug.log to identify the rejected channel instead of deleting mods at random. This guide answers “How do I fix connection closed – mismatched mod channel list?”, explains why a Forge client can fail even when mod names look identical, and shows how to find the mod responsible.

What the mismatched mod channel list error means
Forge checks network compatibility before it creates a play session. Mods register channels through Forge’s SimpleChannel API, which includes a protocol version and compatibility predicates for connections in both directions. Forge uses those same values when it checks a server in the multiplayer list. If either endpoint rejects the other endpoint’s protocol, login is denied before world data is sent. The API documentation describes the third and fourth arguments as predicates that determine whether an incoming protocol version is compatible with the client or server: Forge SimpleChannel documentation.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat is why the message is a compatibility failure, not a guarantee that every JAR filename differs. A failed channel can result from any of these conditions:
- A mod is present on one side but absent on the other.
- The same mod is installed at different build versions.
- The Minecraft version and Forge build do not form the combination expected by the modpack.
- The client or server is loading a different instance directory than the one you inspected.
- The server was started with a vanilla server JAR rather than the Forge server JAR.
- A mod’s network protocol changed even though its visible name stayed the same.
Forge also supports channels that can be absent or accept a vanilla endpoint. In the API’s terms, ABSENT and ACCEPTVANILLA are special compatibility values; a channel whose predicates return false for both sides must be present on the other endpoint. Treat the channel named in the log as the useful clue, not the wording of the disconnect screen.

Why identical-looking mod lists can still fail
Filenames do not prove identical builds
Two files can have nearly identical names while differing in a patch release, loader build or repackaged contents. Compare the complete filename, version suffix, file size and, when practical, a SHA-256 hash. A client using a file copied from another Minecraft version can appear to contain the “same mod” while registering a different protocol.
The profile may point at the wrong folder
Launchers commonly keep several instances under an instances directory. The profile you start may be reading mods, config and logs from an older pack, while you are checking a newer folder in a file manager. Forge support guidance specifically recommends setting the profile’s GameDir to the actual pack instance directory: Forge support discussion on GameDir.

A server can have a perfectly prepared mods folder and still expose no Forge channels if its startup command launches the vanilla server JAR. Check the command and the first lines of the console for the Forge server bootstrap. Starting the wrong JAR is identified as a common cause in this support answer: Minecraft Forum server-support thread.
Fast triage: collect these facts before changing anything
Write down the values from the client launcher and the server console separately. Forge’s versioning guidance treats the Minecraft version and Forge/API versions as distinct compatibility components: Forge versioning documentation.
| Item | Client record | Server record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minecraft version | Exact number shown by the profile | Exact number shown at startup | A mod compiled for another Minecraft release can register incompatible channels. |
| Forge build | Loader/build displayed by the launcher | Forge server build displayed in console | Matching mod files are not enough if the loader builds differ. |
| Modpack release | Pack name and release number | Pack release used to assemble the server | Different pack releases can pin different mod builds. |
| Java/runtime details | Runtime selected by the launcher | Runtime used by the server process | A launcher can start a different instance or runtime than expected. |
| GameDir/instance path | Absolute profile directory | Directory from which the server loads files | This confirms that the folders you inspect are the folders actually loaded. |
Do not delete a world or overwrite configuration files during this inventory. Make a backup of the server world, mods, config and any launcher profile data first.

Step-by-step fix for “connection closed – mismatched mod channel list”
-
Record the exact environment
Capture the Minecraft version, Forge build, modpack release and Java/runtime details from both launchers. Include the complete profile name and GameDir path. If one side reports a different Minecraft or Forge version, correct that mismatch before changing individual mods. Do not mix files from another pack release merely because the game version number looks similar.

Confirm that the server is really Forge
Inspect the startup command, not just the contents of the server directory. The command must invoke the Forge server installation or its generated launch script. Read the startup console for Forge loading messages and a Forge mod list. If it starts a vanilla server JAR, stop it, select the Forge launch command and restart. A vanilla process cannot provide the Forge channels required by a modded client.
-
Verify the client’s GameDir
Open the launcher or modpack manager profile settings and locate the GameDir or game-directory field. It must point to the specific pack instance folder containing that pack’s
mods, configandlogsdirectories—not the parent directory that contains several instances and not an old profile. Launch once after correcting the path so a fresh log is written in the intended instance. -
Synchronize the mod files
Stop the server before copying files. Compare both
modsdirectories by complete filename and version. Remove stale duplicates, then copy the known-good set from the pack you intend to run to the other endpoint. A Forge support report resolved this error by copying the server’s mod folder to the client, replacing duplicate files and removing entries markedREJECTEDindebug.log: Forge support report on matching mod folders. When file names are ambiguous, compare file sizes and SHA-256 hashes with your operating system’s checksum utility. A hash mismatch means the files are not identical, even if their names match. Keep a backup of the original client folder until the connection succeeds.

Account for client-only and server-only mods
Do not assume every mod must be copied to both sides. Some mods intentionally run only on the client or only on the server. Others register a channel that must be present and compatible on both endpoints. The Forge channel rules distinguish optional channels from mandatory ones: a channel that returns
falsefor both compatibility checks must exist on the other endpoint. Use the named channel and the mod’s installation instructions to decide whether the counterpart is optional; do not remove a required server mod simply because it has no visible client interface. -
Read the logs before guessing
For modern Forge installations, open the instance’s
.minecraft/logs/debug.log(or the equivalentlogs/debug.loginside the configured GameDir). Managed launchers may also have an instance launcher log. Search for:rejected their server side version numberclient has mods that are missing on serverserver has mods that are missing on client- A channel identifier such as
modid:main REJECTEDentries associated with a mod or channel
These lines identify what the disconnect screen omits. Forge support requests the complete log because the short message alone does not name the offending mod. Examples of the diagnostic pattern and requested logs appear in this Forge support thread and this earlier Forge support thread.
-
Isolate the named offender
Back up the pack, then remove the specific suspect from both endpoints, restart the server and test one connection. If the connection succeeds, install a build of that mod intended for the recorded Minecraft and Forge versions on both sides. If the error remains, restore the mod and test the next channel named in the log.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. When the log lists many candidates, use a binary search: divide the optional or suspect mods into two groups, test with one group removed, and keep narrowing the failing half. Restart the server for every test so Forge rebuilds its channel list. Never remove core libraries or world-generation mods permanently without a backup; restore each test change after recording its result.

Reinstall only when the instance itself is polluted
A clean profile is appropriate when the GameDir contains unexplained leftovers, duplicate versions, or files from several packs. Create a fresh Forge profile for the exact Minecraft version, point it at a new instance directory and copy only the known-good server pack files. Preserve the old
debug.logand configuration backup so you can compare what changed. Do not combine JARs from another Minecraft version or another modpack release during the rebuild.
How to interpret the important log messages
| Log wording | Likely meaning | Next action |
|---|---|---|
client has mods that are missing on server |
The client loaded one or more mods the server did not load. | Check whether each is client-only. Remove an unintended client extra or install the required server counterpart from the same pack release. |
server has mods that are missing on client |
The server loaded a mod the client did not load. | Install the matching client file unless the mod’s documentation identifies it as server-only. |
rejected their server side version number |
A registered channel rejected the protocol value offered by the other side. | Find the associated mod or channel, then align its build and loader compatibility on both endpoints. |
A named channel such as modid:main |
The channel identifier points toward the mod that registered it. | Search both mod folders and the pack’s version list for that mod; test only that suspect first. |
| No useful channel or missing-mod line | The visible error may be secondary to a wrong profile, wrong server JAR or truncated log. | Confirm the GameDir and Forge startup, then reproduce once and capture the complete fresh debug.log. |
Choosing a recovery method
Use the least disruptive method that addresses the evidence. All three approaches below require the same Minecraft and Forge versions; none should overwrite a world without a backup.
| Method | Version match | How files become identical | Instance-path control | Best use | Backup requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manual synchronization | You verify the exact values recorded from both endpoints. | Compare filenames, versions and hashes, then copy the known-good mods set. |
Correct the launcher GameDir before testing. | The log identifies one or a few mismatched mods and the pack is otherwise healthy. | Back up the original client and server folders before replacement. |
| Modpack import | The imported pack supplies its pinned Minecraft and Forge values; verify them against the server. | The launcher recreates the pack’s files, after which you confirm the server uses the same release. | The import creates a new instance; select that instance explicitly. | The existing client has accumulated duplicates or files from several releases. | Keep the old instance, world and configuration until a successful join. |
| Clean Forge profile | You install Forge for the exact recorded Minecraft version. | Copy only the known-good server pack files into the new profile. | A new directory removes ambiguity about which mods folder is loaded. |
The logs remain inconsistent, the profile is polluted, or the wrong loader was installed. | Preserve the old logs, configuration and world; never use a clean profile as a reason to delete them. |
Common traps and their fixes
“The mod names match, so the pack must match”
Names are only one identifier. A different build, loader target or file hash can register a different protocol. Compare the actual files and the version metadata recorded by the pack.
Recommended Free Tools
“I copied the server folder, but the error is unchanged”
Recheck where the client launcher is reading its files. If its GameDir still points to an older instance, the copied files are not being loaded. Confirm the active path in the profile settings and inspect the debug.log generated after the next launch.
“Removing random mods made the server start, but clients still cannot join”
Server startup success does not prove channel compatibility. Restore unrelated mods, use the log’s named channel and isolate one suspect at a time. Random removal can also break world content or dependencies without fixing the original protocol rejection.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
“The error appears only in the multiplayer list”
Forge uses channel compatibility values during server-list ping as well as during login. A server can therefore be flagged before a connection attempt. Treat the list result as an early warning and still inspect the endpoint logs.
“A fresh reinstall fixed it, but I do not know why”
A reinstall can remove stale files and correct an incorrect GameDir, but it does not identify the original cause. Keep the old log and compare the old and new mod sets; otherwise the same wrong file or profile path can be introduced again.
Preventing the mismatch on the next update
- Record the Minecraft version, Forge build and pack release in the server’s deployment notes.
- Distribute one authoritative mod set rather than allowing ad hoc client downloads.
- Keep client and server instance directories clearly named and separate.
- After every pack update, compare the complete mod list and remove obsolete duplicate versions.
- Retain a copy of
debug.logfrom the last working release so a new rejection can be compared quickly. - Back up the world and configuration before changing loader or mod versions.
- When a mod is client-only or server-only, document that status so players do not “correct” a deliberate asymmetry.
Scope of this fix
This procedure is specific to Forge’s channel handshake and Forge support evidence. It does not establish a universal remedy for other mod loaders, Minecraft editions or proxy networks. If your log identifies a different loader or a proxy-specific protocol error, follow that loader’s compatibility rules instead of applying Forge channel assumptions.
The decisive evidence is the combination of the exact environment records, the active GameDir, the Forge server startup and the fresh debug.log. Once those agree, correct the named mismatch and retest; the disconnect should no longer occur before world entry.
