If you see “Timed Out waiting for achievement” in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (MWIII), first check Activision’s service status. If services are operating, test your platform’s internet connection, then fully restart the game and try again. These steps can help rule out general connection or application problems, but no confirmed fix or cause for this exact error is documented in the sources available.
What the MWIII achievement timeout means
A report published January 10, 2024 described players seeing “Timed Out waiting for achievement” after matches; some instances were followed by the game quitting or crashing, and the report also mentioned Zombies. It did not establish a cause or a reliable fix. The message may include “[SMITH+CAMP]”; the report does not explain what that tag means. PiunikaWeb’s report labels its suggested steps unofficial.

Activision’s reviewed MWIII known-issues page does not list this exact message. That only means it was not listed on that page when reviewed; it does not show that Activision has never addressed it elsewhere.
Do not confuse it with “Timed out waiting for instance inventory.” Activision’s November 2023 launch patch notes discuss that separate error, which prevented players from entering the Modern Warfare Zombies menu. Those notes do not establish a fix for the achievement timeout. Read the launch patch notes.

Troubleshoot in this order
1. Check Activision’s service status
Start with Activision’s online services status page. A non-green platform indicator or an alert can point to a service-side connection problem. If the service is disrupted, wait for it to recover before changing your local network settings.
2. Test your platform’s connection
If services appear operational, run the connection test available on your console or PC platform. Activision’s MWIII connection guide links platform-specific guidance for PlayStation, Xbox, Battle.net, and Steam. A failed test suggests you should address the platform or connection issue before trying more involved game troubleshooting.

3. Close and relaunch MWIII
Fully exit the game, start it again, and retry. Waiting briefly before retrying is another suggestion in the third-party report, not an Activision-confirmed remedy. Neither step is guaranteed to clear this exact error.
4. Check the home network only if connection symptoms point there
If other online activity is also unstable, try Activision’s general network checks: use Ethernet if available, restart the router, and reduce other bandwidth-heavy activity while playing. Activision says, “We strongly recommend using a wired Ethernet connection during online gameplay.” That is general connection advice, not evidence that Ethernet fixes this achievement timeout. The guide also describes optional UPnP and port-forwarding tests; avoid changing router settings as a first step if MWIII otherwise works normally. Test the game after each change. If you use a school, workplace, or shared network, ask its administrator before altering network settings.

5. If MWIII freezes or crashes, use the crash steps
If the timeout is followed by a freeze, quit and restart the game. Activision’s crash and freeze guidance also recommends rebooting the console in some cases and provides platform-specific steps for persistent crashes. These steps address the crash symptom; they do not diagnose or confirm a fix for the achievement message.
6. Treat VPN or proxy changes as an unofficial test
The third-party report suggests retrying without a VPN or proxy. It identifies its troubleshooting list as unofficial, so consider this a low-confidence test rather than an established solution.

7. Report the issue if it keeps happening
Use the feedback and bug-reporting links in Activision’s MWIII support hub. Include your platform, game mode, when the message appears (for example, after a match), the exact wording, and whether the game exits, freezes, or crashes. Those details help distinguish a connection problem from an application failure.
