The “No User Logon” message means Counter-Strike could not validate the Steam session required to join or remain in a match. Fully exit Counter-Strike and Steam, reopen Steam, launch the game from your Library, and wait about 10 seconds at the main menu before matchmaking. If the message returns, clear Steam’s download cache, sign in again, verify the game files, then isolate network, security-software, and overlay conflicts.
What “No User Logon” means
Counter-Strike displays this message when the game cannot confirm the Steam identity session it needs for online play. You may still be able to browse the Steam client or load the main menu, so the error does not by itself prove that your internet connection is completely down. A Valve issue report describes players being removed from a competitive match after Steam failed to synchronize data, with the game showing “No user logon” and “Connecting to CS:GO network.” Another report records a disconnection after about 10 minutes. A Steam Community report describes the related sequence “Steam is required to join a game. Please check your connection to Steam and try again” followed by “No Steam logon.”

The same troubleshooting sequence applies whether your Library entry is labeled Counter-Strike, CS:GO, or CS2. The immediate goal is to create a fresh Steam session, then determine whether cached data, damaged game files, network filtering, or third-party software is preventing that session from reaching Counter-Strike.
Do this first: refresh Steam and wait at the menu
- Leave any match and quit Counter-Strike. Do not just close the game window if Steam still shows it as running.
- Exit Steam completely. Use Steam’s exit command, then wait a few seconds for the client to close rather than immediately launching the game again.
- Start Steam and sign in. Launch Counter-Strike from the Steam Library, not from an old desktop shortcut or a running game process.
- Stay on the Counter-Strike main menu for roughly 10 seconds. Only then try matchmaking.
This short pause is the most targeted quick workaround documented for the long-running error. The 2024 technical analysis by freudenjmp concludes: “To fix the infamous No user logon issue in Counter-Strike that existed for over a decade, wait 10 seconds in main menu after starting CS2, so Steam can properly validate your Steam ID.” Treat that as a practical, community-reported mitigation rather than a Valve guarantee. If you are returned to the menu before the 10 seconds pass, repeat the full exit and relaunch once; a partial restart can leave the old authentication state in memory.

Start with the reversible actions at the top. Move downward only when the previous step does not change the symptom. This order prevents an unnecessary reinstall and gives each test a clear diagnostic purpose.
Clear Steam’s download cache
Steam Support states that clearing the download cache flushes locally cached configuration data, does not remove installed games, and requires you to log in again.
- Open Steam.
- Choose Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Select Clear Download Cache.
- Confirm the prompt.
- When Steam restarts or asks for credentials, sign in again.
- Launch Counter-Strike from the Library and remain at the main menu for about 10 seconds before joining a match.
Have your Steam sign-in method available before starting this step. Clearing the cache is deliberately earlier than file verification because it changes local Steam state without deleting game content. If the error disappears only until the next restart, note that timing; a short-lived improvement can indicate a session or service problem rather than a permanently damaged installation.

File verification checks the local Counter-Strike installation for missing or damaged files. It is useful when an update was interrupted or a file was changed, but it cannot repair a Steam authentication outage by itself.

- Open the Steam Library.
- Right-click your Counter-Strike entry and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Allow the check to finish. Steam warns that it can take several minutes and that one or more local configuration files may fail verification normally.
- When Steam finishes, restart Counter-Strike and again wait at the main menu before matchmaking.
A report that says a configuration file did not validate is not automatically a failure; Steam specifically notes that this can be normal. Focus on whether Steam downloads replacement content and whether the online error changes afterward. If verification completes with no meaningful change, do not repeat it over and over: proceed to network and software isolation.
Check Steam, router, and network conditions
Steam’s troubleshooting guidance lists several communication blockers that can produce login or connection failures even when ordinary websites load:
- Firewall rules that block Steam or Counter-Strike traffic.
- Antivirus or other security software filtering the connection.
- Proxy settings or packet-filtering tools.
- Traffic-optimizing utilities that alter game traffic.
- A router or modem that needs to be restarted.
- An operating system or device driver that is out of date.
Restart the local connection
Close Counter-Strike, restart the router or modem using its normal power procedure, wait for the connection to return, and then repeat the Steam relaunch test. Do not start matchmaking while the router is still reconnecting. If possible, test the same account on another network. A successful match on a different network is strong evidence that the original router, filtering rule, or network path needs attention; it does not prove that the Steam account is defective.
Review firewall and security rules
Check that Steam and Counter-Strike are allowed through the firewall profile you actually use. If your security product has web, application, packet, or game-traffic filtering, inspect its event history for a block at the time of the error. You can temporarily pause a filtering feature for a controlled test, then restore protection immediately after the test. Do not leave security software disabled as a permanent workaround, and do not interpret a blocked connection as proof that malware is present.

Remove proxy and traffic manipulation during testing
Turn off a proxy, packet filter, or traffic optimizer temporarily and retry with the simplest connection available. Record which setting was changed and whether the result changed; this makes it possible to create a narrow allow rule later instead of leaving an entire security layer disabled.
Update the operating system and drivers
Steam’s troubleshooting page recommends keeping the operating system and drivers current when investigating Steam communication failures. Apply normal updates, restart Windows, and test Counter-Strike again. Updating is a general connectivity check, not a guarantee that a driver change will resolve an authentication session.
Test for overlays and injection conflicts
CS2 Trusted Mode prevents third-party files from interacting with the game. Steam says incompatible software can disconnect a player until CS2 is relaunched in Trusted Mode. This makes overlays, injectors, recording utilities, and similar tools important suspects when the error began after installing or updating another program.

- Exit overlays, injectors, recording tools, performance tuners, and other utilities that place files or an interface inside the game.
- Relaunch Counter-Strike in Trusted Mode when Steam presents that option.
- Wait at the main menu, then try one match.
If the error disappears, re-enable utilities one at a time and test after each change. The first tool that brings the error back is the useful lead. Keep that utility disabled, update it, or consult its vendor for a CS2-compatible mode. Do not add random launch options or replace game files while diagnosing an injection conflict; those changes can introduce a second problem and make the original result harder to interpret.

Recognize a Steam-side or service-side pattern
Local troubleshooting is less likely to help when the failure has a broad or repeatable pattern:
- Several players report the same “No User Logon” or “No Steam logon” message at the same time.
- The error starts immediately after a Steam or Counter-Strike update.
- You can join briefly, then are disconnected after a similar period each session.
- Clearing the cache, verifying files, and testing another network produce no lasting change.
- A complete reinstall helps for only the first session.
Valve issue reports show that this problem can persist across sessions and platforms. One report says a complete Steam reinstall provided only temporary relief. Reinstallation therefore belongs at the end of the decision tree, not at the beginning. Before escalating, capture the date and exact time, the wording shown by Counter-Strike, whether Steam remains signed in, whether the failure occurs in every mode, and what changed immediately before it began. Preserve relevant Steam logs rather than deleting them; those details help support distinguish an account-session failure from a local file or network problem.

Reinstalling Steam or Counter-Strike is disruptive and can consume substantial download time. Consider it only after the cache, verification, network, firewall, and Trusted Mode tests have been completed, and only when local installation damage remains plausible. Back up any settings or configuration you intentionally keep, confirm that you can sign back in, and allow the installation to finish before testing. A reinstall that works for one launch and then fails again should be treated as evidence against a permanent file problem; move to Steam Support with your timeline and logs instead of repeating the reinstall.

A practical decision path
The error appears immediately after launching
Repeat a full Steam exit, relaunch, and 10-second menu wait. If that fails, clear the download cache and sign in again. An immediate failure after those steps points toward Steam communication, firewall filtering, or a service-side issue more than a match-specific problem.

You are kicked from an active match
Note how long you remained connected and whether Steam displayed a synchronization or “Connecting to CS:GO network” message. Restart the router, test another network, and inspect filtering software. A repeatable delay followed by a disconnect is useful evidence for support because it differs from an error that occurs before matchmaking.
Verification finds files, but the error remains
Let Steam finish downloading replacements, restart the game, and perform the menu-wait test once. If authentication still fails, stop repeating verification and isolate network and third-party software instead.
The game works only with utilities closed
Keep the conflicting overlay, injector, or recorder disabled while you update or reconfigure it. Trusted Mode is the clean comparison that separates a game-file problem from software injecting into the running process.

- A working browser connection proves Steam is healthy: Steam identity validation can fail while general internet access continues.
- File verification fixes every “No User Logon” case: it addresses local files, not an authentication outage.
- Reinstalling is a guaranteed solution: a Valve report records only temporary benefit after a complete Steam reinstall.
- The message proves your account was banned: the documented causes also include cache state, filtering, network conditions, and incompatible software.
- Disabling protection permanently is acceptable: use only a controlled test and restore security features immediately.
Optional shortcut after the manual fixes
