Steam crashes have several possible causes, so there is no single universal fix. The most reliable order is to restart Steam and the computer, install operating-system and driver updates, disable non-essential software and overlays, verify the affected game’s files, and then isolate client, library, network, compatibility, or hardware problems.
Use the guide below to identify whether only one game, the Steam client, or the whole computer is failing. Stop when the crash is resolved; if the computer blue-screens, restarts, freezes, overheats, or stutters before failing, treat it as a system problem rather than a normal Steam game crash.

First, identify what is actually crashing
“Steam keeps crashing” can describe three different failures. A single game may close while the Steam window remains usable; the Steam client may disappear or fail before its Library loads; or the entire computer may freeze, restart, or show a blue screen. The fix depends on that scope.
| What you observe | Likely scope | Best first direction |
|---|---|---|
| Steam closes before you can use the Library | Steam client or its installation state | Restart, update the system and drivers, then isolate peripherals, network state, cache, and library permissions. |
| Only one game closes, while Steam stays open | Game files, requirements, overlay, or game-specific configuration | Verify that game’s files, check requirements, and test with the Steam Community Overlay disabled. |
| Several games crash but Steam remains open | Shared driver, overlay, background software, or operating-system issue | Update drivers and the operating system, then test with non-essential software and overlays disabled. |
| The crash occurs when an overlay appears | Steam Community Overlay or another overlay interacting with the game | Turn off the Steam overlay for the affected title and limit other background overlays for the test. |
| The computer blue-screens, forcibly restarts, or freezes | Computer hardware, driver, temperature, or system stability problem | Update all drivers and investigate overheating or preceding stutter; do not treat this as only a Steam fault. |
| The problem began after a Steam, game, driver, operating-system, peripheral, antivirus, or network change | Recent configuration change | Note the change and test the affected component in isolation before making several more changes. |
Timing is also useful evidence. Note whether the failure is immediate, follows “Preparing to Launch,” happens only during gameplay, appears after an update, or starts when overlay features are used. That observation determines which branch below deserves attention first.
#1 Best Overall
- Streamlined Fan Connections: Daisy-chain multiple fans together and control them all through just one 4-pin PWM connector and one +5V ARGB connector.
- Lighting Made Easy: Eight LEDs per fan shine bright with customisable lighting through your motherboard’s built-in ARGB control (requires compatible motherboard).
- Precise PWM Speeds: Set your fan speeds up to 2,100 RPM while providing up to 72.8 CFM airflow to your system.
- CORSAIR AirGuide Technology: Anti-vortex vanes direct airflow at your hottest components for concentrated cooling, pushing air in the direction you need when mounted to a radiator or heatsink.
- High Static Pressure: RS fans work well as radiator fans with a static pressure of 2.8mm-H2O to push through obstructions.
Follow these fixes in order
-
Restart Steam and the computer
Exit Steam completely, start it again, and restart the computer before trying the game. Steam recommends this as the first check because a restart resets stuck process state and releases file or device locks. Test the same action that previously failed rather than changing several settings at once.
-
Install operating-system and hardware-driver updates
Apply all available updates for Windows, macOS, or Linux, then install current drivers for the graphics card, chipset, audio, network adapter, and other relevant hardware. Steam’s launch guidance specifically includes driver updates across supported operating systems. On Windows, Windows Update also delivers the .NET Framework that some games and Steam components require. Restart after updates and retest.
If the crash began after a driver or operating-system change, record that fact. A recent change is a useful lead when you later contact the game developer or Steam Support.

Temporarily remove non-essential software and peripherals
For one controlled test, close background programs that are not needed to run the game. Disconnect non-essential external input devices and USB hardware, then launch Steam with only the keyboard, mouse, display, and required network equipment connected. Device utilities, capture tools, hardware monitors, and other overlays can alter how a game starts; removing them helps show whether the failure is specific to Steam or to an interaction.

Disable the Steam Community Overlay for the affected game
In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, stay on General, and turn off Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game. Start the game again. Steam notes that heavy system load and outdated drivers can affect overlay behavior, so this test is especially relevant when the crash occurs as the overlay opens or when its shortcut is pressed.
If disabling the overlay fixes the launch, leave it off for that title while you update drivers and reduce other overlay software. If it changes nothing, restore the setting later and continue with the next check.

- Open Library.
- Right-click the affected game and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify Integrity of Game Files and wait for the process to finish.
- Launch the game again without changing another setting first.
Steam says verification can correct missing or corrupted files that are associated with crashes. It applies to the selected game, so repeat it for each title that shows the same symptom rather than assuming one check repairs every installation.

Isolate a Steam-client failure
When the Steam window itself closes, fails to log in, or cannot complete an update, use client-focused checks after the restart, update, and peripheral tests:
- Restart the modem and router if the failure coincides with sign-in, downloads, or update activity.
- Clear Steam’s download cache when update or login behavior is failing. Use the Steam client’s download settings and the Clear Download Cache command; then sign in again if Steam requests it.
- Repair the Steam library folder when permissions or an interrupted update appear to be involved. In current desktop clients this is available from the library’s storage-management controls; the exact menu placement can vary by client version.
- Keep external input devices disconnected during the test if Steam closes while a controller, wheel, headset, or other accessory is being initialized.
These actions target client state, network state, and library access separately. If Steam still closes immediately after each test, the failure may be configuration-specific rather than a damaged game file.

Check game requirements and platform compatibility
Compare the affected title’s published system requirements with the computer’s operating system, processor, memory, graphics hardware, and available storage. A game that never reaches its menu can still be failing because the platform does not meet a required component.

Treat freezes, blue screens, restarts, and heat as system failures
Steam Support distinguishes a normal application crash from a blue screen, forced restart, or computer-wide freeze: those symptoms indicate a problem with the computer rather than Steam, the game, or the application alone. Update every relevant driver and investigate overheating, especially if the computer stutters, slows, or shows graphical instability immediately before the failure.
Stop repeatedly launching the game if the system is overheating or losing power. Check that fans and vents are unobstructed, monitor whether the failure is limited to demanding games, and seek qualified hardware help if instability continues after driver updates. A game-file verification cannot repair an underlying temperature, power, or hardware problem.

Choose the right branch for the symptom
Steam closes immediately
Start with the restart and update steps, then disconnect non-essential peripherals. If the client still disappears before the Library loads, clear the download cache when the event is connected to login or update activity and repair the library folder when permissions or update state look suspect. If none of those changes the behavior, preserve the exact timing and error text for Steam Support rather than repeatedly reinstalling unrelated components.

A game closes after “Preparing to Launch”
Check the game’s requirements and verify its installed files. Test once with the Steam Community Overlay disabled. If only that title fails while other games launch, focus on its files, requirements, and developer-specific compatibility rather than changing the entire Steam installation.
The game crashes during play
Note whether the crash follows overlay use, a graphics-heavy scene, stuttering, or rising heat. Disable the overlay, update graphics and other hardware drivers, and investigate temperatures if performance degrades first. If the whole computer freezes or restarts, follow the system-failure branch instead of treating the event as a routine game close.
Several games fail after an update
Look for a shared change: operating system, graphics driver, Steam client, background utility, peripheral, antivirus configuration, or network equipment. Update the system and drivers, run a controlled test with non-essential software and devices removed, and verify files for each affected title. The common change is more informative than any one game’s error message.

Record evidence before escalating
If the ordered checks do not solve the problem, write down:
- Whether Steam, one game, several games, or the whole computer closes.
- The exact point of failure: immediate launch, “Preparing to Launch,” overlay use, gameplay, update, or login.
- Any displayed error text or code, copied exactly.
- The operating system and version, plus the graphics-driver version.
- Whether the computer freezes, blue-screens, restarts, overheats, or stutters first.
- Recent changes to Steam, the game, drivers, operating system, peripherals, antivirus settings, or network equipment.
- Which of the restart, update, overlay, file-verification, cache, library, and compatibility tests changed the symptom.
Contact the game developer for a title-specific failure or Steam Support for a client and account problem. Steam notes that some crashes are not caused by user configuration; when the standard checks fail, advanced troubleshooting may require a qualified technician. Supplying the evidence above lets support distinguish a game defect from a client, driver, network, or computer fault.
