If SCP: Secret Laboratory shows “Client failed to authenticate in time,” “Server Verification Failed,” a connection failure, or remains stuck on authenticating, first try a second public server. If every server fails, fully restart Steam, check Steam’s connection status, add --weak-http-security to the game’s launch options, and check whether antivirus or firewall filtering is blocking SCPSL. Players in countries with documented internet restrictions may need the same launch option and an allow-list change. Capture the exact console error before escalating to Northwood support.

What the SCP: Secret Laboratory authentication error means
SCP: Secret Laboratory does not authenticate a public-server connection entirely inside the game. It depends on Northwood Central Servers for player authentication and for generating the in-game list of public servers. Northwood’s EULA, last updated 22 December 2022, defines a Central Server as “a server hosted by Northwood that handles authentication of Players, generation of the in-game list of public Servers, or server-side part of the Anti-cheat System.”

Northwood’s Tech Support Wiki says the timeout form is “typically caused by a user’s authentication token being rejected or reassigned constantly by our central servers.” That is why reinstalling the game is not the first response: the failure can occur between your client, Steam, a particular server, your local security software, and Northwood’s authentication service.
The wording can vary even when the underlying path is similar. You may see:

- Client failed to authenticate in time or stuck on authenticating: the authentication exchange did not complete before the timeout.
- Server Verification Failed: the client could not verify the server connection. Steam’s official guidance treats a successful connection to another server as evidence that the failed server may be the problem.
- Connection failure: a broad result that needs the accompanying console text to identify the failing stage.
- A message mentioning government restrictions: Northwood says some players cannot connect because government internet restrictions prevent the client from reaching authentication servers.
Because these messages do not all identify the same fault domain, use the checks below in order. Each step either fixes a documented cause or tells you where to look next.
Start by separating a server problem from a wider outage
Try at least one unrelated public server
Leave the server that produced the error and attempt to join a different public server. Ideally, test more than one, because a single server can be offline, misconfigured, or unable to complete its own verification even while the rest of the network is healthy.
- Only one server fails: the evidence points toward that server. Do not change system-wide settings yet; try another server or contact that server’s staff.
- Several servers fail but the list loads: continue with Steam and local-network checks. A shared authentication or Steam connection issue is more likely than one server’s configuration.
- No public server works: check Steam’s service status and Friends connection, then perform a complete Steam restart.
This test is low risk and provides the most useful first piece of evidence: whether the failure is server-specific or follows your account and client.
Check Steam status and the Friends connection
Steam’s Server Verification Failed guidance recommends checking Steam when no servers work. Look at Steam’s service-status information and the Friends list. If Steam reports a lost connection to the Friends network, treat that as a Steam-side connectivity problem rather than immediately assuming that SCP: Secret Laboratory’s files are damaged.
There is no reliable published success rate, incident frequency, or average resolution time for this error. A status check can still prevent unnecessary configuration changes during a broader Steam or Northwood interruption.

Restart Steam completely
A normal game restart may leave the Steam client and its network session intact. Northwood’s documented sequence is to exit Steam, ensure it is no longer running, reopen it, and launch SCP: Secret Laboratory again.

- Open Steam’s main menu and choose Exit, not merely the window’s close button.
- Wait a few seconds, then verify that Steam is no longer running in the taskbar notification area or in your operating system’s running-process view.
- Start Steam again and wait until it has completed sign-in and the Friends list is available.
- Launch SCP: Secret Laboratory from the Library and test a server.
If Steam still reports a lost Friends-network connection after reopening, record that message. It is valuable context for support and explains why repeated in-game retries may not help.
Add Northwood’s documented launch option
How to enter --weak-http-security
Northwood documents --weak-http-security for authentication-timeout cases and for its government-restrictions guidance. Add it as a Steam launch option:
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click SCP: Secret Laboratory and choose Properties.
- Stay on the General page and find the Launch Options field.
- Enter exactly
--weak-http-security, including the two leading hyphens. - Close the Properties window, launch the game, and try the server again.
Northwood warns that this option may slow server-list loading. That trade-off is expected; it does not mean the setting failed. Give the list time to populate before deciding whether the connection attempt worked.
How to undo the option
The setting is reversible. Return to Library → right-click SCP: Secret Laboratory → Properties → General → Launch Options, remove --weak-http-security, close the window, and relaunch the game. Remove it if Northwood support tells you to test without it or if your original connection returns and you no longer need the workaround.

Check antivirus and firewall filtering
Security software can prevent the client from reaching an authentication endpoint. Northwood specifically documents allow-listing SCPSL for the restriction-related case. The same check is reasonable when your own security software is visibly blocking the game, but do not assume every authentication error is caused by a firewall.
- Open the control panel for your antivirus or endpoint-security product.
- Find its application exceptions, allow-list, or blocked-applications section.
- Add the SCP: Secret Laboratory client (SCPSL) according to that product’s instructions.
- Check Windows Firewall or another network firewall for a blocked-game rule and allow the game on the networks you actually use.
- Apply the change, restart the game, and repeat the multi-server test.
Prefer an explicit allow rule for the game over disabling protection globally. If the security product records a blocked connection, save that event with the timestamp; it gives support a concrete lead. If there is no block event and other Steam games connect normally, changing firewall rules repeatedly is unlikely to be productive.
When government or regional restrictions are involved
Northwood’s “Authentication error (government restrictions)” guidance covers players whose national internet controls prevent the client from reaching authentication servers. If your exact message names government restrictions, or if people on the same local network can connect while your region cannot, use the documented sequence:
- Add
--weak-http-securitythrough Steam’s Launch Options field. - Allow-list SCPSL in antivirus and firewall software.
- Retry after restarting the game, allowing extra time for the server list because Northwood warns that loading can be slower with this option.
- Use Northwood’s localized support route if the restriction remains.
A reputable VPN can be a conditional network experiment for someone facing a documented regional restriction, but Northwood’s official guidance does not endorse a particular VPN. A VPN also changes the network path and may introduce its own latency, filtering, or account-policy questions. Do not treat one as a universal cure for ordinary authentication timeouts, and do not buy a service solely because the generic error appeared.

The visible kick message is often less specific than the red or diagnostic text in the game console. Capture that text immediately after the failed connection. Different messages can indicate a rejected or repeatedly reassigned token, an unreachable host, a Steam-side outage, or a regional restriction.

What to record
- The complete on-screen error, including capitalization and punctuation.
- A screenshot of the console or kick message, with personal information cropped only when necessary.
- Your SCP: Secret Laboratory version and operating system.
- Whether one server, several servers, or every server fails.
- Whether Steam’s Friends list shows a lost-connection message.
- Whether
--weak-http-securitywas present and whether the server list became slower. - Any antivirus or firewall block event associated with the attempt.
Do not add --authdebug as an automatic fix. Diagnostic flags are useful when current support guidance asks for them, but they do not themselves repair a rejected token or an unreachable authentication service. If support requests diagnostic output, follow the exact current instructions and attach the resulting text rather than changing several unrelated options at once.

Common situations and the correct branch
“Server Verification Failed” on one server
Try another public server first. If the second server works, the failed server is the useful lead. Note its name, the time of the attempt, and the exact message before contacting that server’s staff. There is no reason to alter Steam launch options for a problem that remains isolated to one server.
“Client failed to authenticate in time” everywhere
Check Steam’s Friends connection, exit Steam completely, reopen it, and retest. If the timeout persists, add --weak-http-security and allow-list SCPSL. Keep the console screenshot from both before and after the change so support can see whether the failure wording changed.
The game is stuck on “authenticating” while the server list is slow
If you recently added --weak-http-security, the slower list loading is a documented side effect. Wait for the list to finish, then make one controlled connection attempt. If the game remains stuck, capture the console output and proceed to escalation rather than repeatedly joining and leaving servers.
Only a restricted-region connection fails
Use the government-restrictions branch: launch option, SCPSL allow-list, retry, and localized Northwood support. A VPN remains an optional experiment, not an official requirement or guaranteed solution.

Steam itself cannot stay connected
Resolve the Steam connection state first. SCP: Secret Laboratory cannot complete an authentication path that depends on a Steam session while Steam is reporting a lost Friends-network connection. Include that Steam message in any support request.

Escalate to Northwood with a complete report
If the documented checks do not restore access, use Northwood’s official support site or its Discord technical-support channel. Northwood’s contact information identifies Discord as the fastest support route and directs players to the support site for frequently asked questions.
A concise, reproducible report is more useful than “authentication is broken.” Include:
- Your exact error text and a screenshot of the console or kick message.
- Your SCP: Secret Laboratory game version and operating system.
- The names of the servers tested and whether every server failed.
- The approximate time of each attempt and your country or region when a restriction may be relevant.
- Whether Steam’s Friends list showed a lost-connection message.
- Whether you fully restarted Steam.
- Whether you tested
--weak-http-security, and whether server-list loading slowed. - Whether SCPSL was allow-listed in antivirus or firewall software and whether a block event was logged.
- Any other diagnostic information that Northwood’s current support instructions request.
Do not include passwords, authentication tokens, or unrelated personal data. Keep the original wording intact; paraphrasing “failed to authenticate” can remove the detail that distinguishes a token rejection from an unreachable host.
What not to do
- Do not reinstall the game as the first response. The documented timeout explanation concerns the authentication token and central-server path, so a fresh installation may leave the actual fault unchanged.
- Do not repeatedly change several network settings at once. You will lose the evidence showing which change affected the result.
- Do not disable antivirus or firewall protection globally. Use a targeted, reversible allow-list rule and remove it if support identifies another cause.
- Do not assume a VPN is necessary for a normal timeout. Reserve that experiment for a documented regional-restriction scenario and remember that no particular provider is endorsed by Northwood’s guidance.
- Do not treat
--authdebugas a repair switch. Use diagnostic options only when support asks for them.
Bottom line
The fastest reliable path is to test another server, check Steam’s status and Friends connection, restart Steam completely, then add --weak-http-security and check SCPSL’s local allow-list when appropriate. A one-server failure points to that server; an every-server failure needs Steam, Northwood, and local-network checks. When those steps fail, the exact console message, screenshots, version, region, and record of attempted fixes give Northwood the information needed to investigate the authentication path.
