The practical answer: install a photo application on your server, give it dependable storage for originals and generated previews, connect its database, and place the web interface behind HTTPS. For a Google Photos-style backup of game screenshots and phone photos, Immich is the closest fit. Choose Piwigo for a traditional web gallery, or Nextcloud when images must share storage and collaboration tools with other files.

What a self-hosted image host actually includes
A self-hosted image host is not just a folder exposed through a web server. A usable deployment has four parts:

- Storage: space for original files and the thumbnails, resized images, previews and video transcodes created by the application.
- Database: a service that stores accounts, albums, metadata, permissions and search information when the application requires one.
- Web endpoint: a local address for your home network, or a domain protected by HTTPS if you will connect from outside.
For a gaming use case, this can become a private library for console screenshots, PC captures, mod-development reference images, LAN-party photos and recorded clips. The application you choose matters more than the server brand: each platform has a different storage layout, client experience and upgrade process.
Choose the platform before buying storage
| Platform | Best fit | Deployment model | Important requirements and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Immich | Automatic phone backup, photo and video search, albums and a Google Photos-style interface | Docker-based application stack | Current guidance calls for at least 6 GB RAM and 2 CPU cores; 8 GB RAM and 4 cores are recommended. It uses a database and creates additional previews and video transcodes. |
| Piwigo | A conventional web gallery with albums and manually managed uploads | Nginx or Apache with PHP and MySQL/MariaDB | Requires PHP 8.2 or newer on the maintained path, MySQL 5.6+ or MariaDB 10.1+, ImageMagick or GD, FTP access and capacity for cached image sizes. |
| Nextcloud | Images stored alongside general files, sharing and collaboration | Web application with preview-generation and hardening controls | Useful when an image gallery is one part of a broader file platform. Preview generation and security settings need deliberate administration. |
Use Immich when the server’s main job is replacing a cloud photo service. Use Piwigo when a curated gallery is more important than automatic mobile backup. Use Nextcloud when the same accounts and storage must serve documents, project files and images.

Plan storage, CPU and memory
Calculate space for more than the original files
Reserve capacity for four categories:
- Original photographs and videos.
- Thumbnails for grid and timeline views.
- Resized or cached versions used for browsing and sharing.
- Video transcodes and temporary processing files.
Immich’s current requirements documentation says thumbnail generation and transcoded video add 10–20% on average to the photo library. That is an average, not a guaranteed ceiling: a library containing many videos or several generated sizes can grow differently. If your originals occupy 2 TB, reserve roughly another 200–400 GB for this documented average before accounting for backups or future growth.
Piwigo also requires room for uploaded pictures and its cached multiple sizes. Its cache behavior means a gallery that appears to contain only one copy of each image can consume substantially more than the source folder suggests.
Keep the database on reliable local storage
Immich recommends a local SSD for its Postgres database and does not support placing that database on a network share. Store the library on a Unix-compatible filesystem that preserves ownership and permission information. A network share may be suitable for some media layouts, but it should not be substituted for the database location when the application documentation says it is unsupported.
Size the machine for the chosen workload
| Workload | Planning guidance |
|---|---|
| Immich minimum | At least 6 GB RAM and 2 CPU cores according to the current requirements page. |
| Immich recommended baseline | 8 GB RAM and 4 CPU cores. This leaves more headroom for indexing, thumbnail jobs and concurrent uploads. |
| Piwigo | The documented prerequisites specify the web stack and image tools rather than a universal RAM number. Allocate additional disk for cached sizes and monitor PHP, database and image-processing load. |
| Nextcloud | Resource needs depend on the wider file workload and preview settings. Large preview queues require more CPU, memory and temporary storage than a basic file share. |
An old Immich quick-start page described a 4 GB RAM and 2 CPU baseline for that version. For a new deployment, use the current 6 GB minimum and 8 GB recommendation instead; requirements can change as software versions add processing features.
Install Immich on your server
The following path follows Immich’s official Docker quick start without assuming a particular Linux distribution.
1. Prepare a dedicated application directory
Create a directory owned by the account that will maintain the stack. Keep the compose files separate from the media location so upgrades and backups are easier to reason about.

2. Download the compose file and environment template
Use the files provided by the Immich quick-start documentation for the release you intend to run. Do not mix a compose file from one release with an environment template from another: variable names and services can change between versions.
3. Set the storage and database variables
Edit the environment file and set UPLOAD_LOCATION to the filesystem path where original uploads and the application’s library will live. Set the database variables required by the supplied compose file, including a strong database password that is not reused elsewhere. Verify that the container account can read and write the selected path.
4. Start the stack
From the directory containing the compose file, run:
docker compose up -d
Check the container status and logs if the web interface does not become available. An empty or unwritable upload path commonly causes failures during the first upload.
5. Create the administrator account
Open the local web address shown by the quick-start instructions. Register the first account as the administrator, then sign in and upload one small test image before importing a large library. Confirm that the original appears at the expected storage location and that a thumbnail is generated.
6. Test mobile and desktop ingestion
Connect one phone or desktop client, upload a small batch and observe CPU, memory and disk growth. This catches permission, reverse-proxy and database problems before you commit a large archive of screenshots or videos.

Install Piwigo when a classic gallery is the priority
Piwigo is a conventional web application rather than a bundled Docker photo stack. Its maintained installation path requires:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Nginx or Apache as the web server.
- MySQL 5.6 or newer, or MariaDB 10.1 or newer.
- PHP 8.2 or newer.
- ImageMagick or GD for image processing.
- An FTP client for uploading files; the project recommends FileZilla.
- Enough disk space for originals and cached multiple sizes.
Provision the web server, PHP, database and image library first. Create a database and user with only the privileges Piwigo needs, upload the application files with your FTP client, then complete the browser-based installer. Create an album, upload a few images and verify that resized views work before importing the full collection. If thumbnails fail, inspect PHP limits, ImageMagick/GD availability and write permissions on Piwigo’s cache directories.
Use Nextcloud for images plus general files
Nextcloud is the sensible choice when your image collection must live beside project documents, save files or shared team folders. Its administration guidance covers HTTPS, preview-generation controls and hardening. The image experience is therefore shaped by the broader file platform rather than by a photo-only workflow.
Before importing a large library, decide which preview sizes are actually needed. Generating every available preview consumes CPU, temporary space and long-term storage. Apply the hardening guidance for your web server and deployment, and test sharing permissions with a non-administrator account so private game captures are not accidentally exposed.
Expose the server safely outside your home
LAN-only access
If you only need the gallery at home or in a private studio, keep it on the private network. A VPN is preferable when you need remote access without publishing the application directly to the internet. Restrict firewall rules to the required local interfaces and avoid forwarding database ports.

Public access
For an internet-facing service, use a domain name, an HTTPS certificate and a reverse proxy. Immich identifies Let’s Encrypt as a free certificate source and Nginx as a reverse-proxy option. The reverse proxy terminates TLS and forwards browser and client requests to the application on the private server network.
Configure the application with the same front-facing URL users will visit. Permit request bodies large enough for your largest upload; a proxy limit that is smaller than the image or video causes an apparently random upload rejection. Enable WebSockets where the application requires them, and use the Nginx or Apache examples in the platform’s documentation rather than guessing header or upgrade directives.
Understand the exposure risk
Immich’s remote-access guidance warns that an internet-facing instance carries security risk because the project is under active development. Public exposure therefore requires a maintenance routine: monitor release notes, update promptly, remove unused accounts, and inspect logs for repeated authentication failures.

Security checklist before importing private media
- Use a long, unique administrator password and enable the strongest available account protection.
- Serve every public request over HTTPS; do not send credentials or private image links over plain HTTP.
- Expose only the reverse-proxy ports to the internet. Keep the database and internal service ports firewalled.
- Apply least-privilege ownership and permissions to media, configuration and database files.
- Keep the operating system, web server, PHP packages, containers and image application current.
- Separate administrator, uploader and viewer accounts when the application supports those roles.
- Review public-share links and revoke links that are no longer needed.
- Test uploads, downloads, search and account recovery after every major upgrade.
Nextcloud’s hardening manual provides server-specific HTTPS and preview controls; the exact directives depend on whether the deployment uses Apache, Nginx, a container or another front end.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Back up the media and the database independently
A photo host has two different kinds of data. The media tree contains originals and generated files; the database contains the catalogue, accounts, albums, permissions and application state. Backing up only one creates an incomplete recovery.
- Back up the complete media or upload directory, including originals and any application-managed derivatives you intend to preserve.
- Export the database using the method documented for your installed application and release.
- Store at least one copy on different physical storage from the server. A second directory on the same disk is not a disaster-recovery copy.
- Protect backup credentials and restrict backup-file permissions, because exports can contain account and metadata information.
- Periodically restore to a spare system or isolated directory. A backup is only useful if the files and database can be reconnected successfully.
Follow the restore instructions for the exact Immich version installed. Its documentation records a procedure change in version 2.5.0, so an older walkthrough may not produce a valid current restore.

Troubleshoot the failures you are most likely to see
Uploads stop at a fixed size
Check the reverse proxy’s maximum request-body setting first, then check application and web-server limits. If small files work and larger videos fail at the same point, a proxy limit is more likely than a damaged library.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsImages upload but thumbnails are missing
Check write permissions on the cache or derivative directories, confirm that ImageMagick/GD is installed for Piwigo, and inspect the image-processing container logs for Immich or Nextcloud. A full filesystem can produce the same symptom, so compare available space with the expected 10–20% Immich derivative allowance.
The application cannot connect to its database
Verify the database variables, container network, credentials and local database path. For Immich, move the database to supported local SSD storage if it is currently on a network share; the project does not support that layout.
Remote access works in a browser but not in an app
Confirm that the application URL is configured as the public HTTPS address, WebSockets are passed through, and the certificate is trusted by the phone or desktop operating system. A proxy that serves ordinary HTML but blocks upgrade requests can produce this split behavior.
The server runs out of disk space after import
Measure originals, previews, caches, transcodes, database files and backups separately. Remove only derivatives that the application can safely regenerate, and expand storage before importing another large video batch. Do not delete files from an application-managed library unless its documentation explicitly describes that cleanup procedure.

A practical decision framework
- Choose Immich if automatic phone backup, timeline browsing, search, albums and video support are the central requirements, and you can provide at least the current hardware baseline.
- Choose Piwigo if you already operate PHP/MySQL hosting and want a traditional, curated gallery with FTP-based imports.
- Choose Nextcloud if images must share accounts, folders and collaboration controls with a broader file service.
- Stay LAN-only or use a VPN if remote sharing is occasional and you do not want the maintenance burden of a public endpoint.
- Use a public HTTPS reverse proxy only when you need access for people or devices that cannot join your private network, and accept the ongoing update and monitoring work.
Whichever platform you select, start with a small test library, verify uploads and restores, then scale storage and indexing. Treat generated previews as real capacity requirements, keep the database on supported reliable storage, and never make the server the only copy of irreplaceable images.
