An SSL handshake failure means the client and server could not establish a trusted TLS connection. The usual causes are an expired or mismatched certificate, a missing intermediate certificate, the wrong SNI-selected virtual host, incompatible TLS versions or cipher suites, or a proxy-to-origin connection that fails separately from direct access. Find the failing connection leg first, then test it with an SNI-aware OpenSSL command before changing configuration.

What an SSL handshake failure actually means
HTTPS does not begin with HTTP. A client first negotiates TLS with the server: it advertises supported protocol versions and cipher suites, sends the requested hostname through Server Name Indication (SNI), receives a certificate chain, verifies the certificate, and establishes shared session keys. Only after that negotiation succeeds can an HTTP request be sent.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAn error labelled SSL handshake failed therefore identifies a negotiation failure, not necessarily an application or web-server outage. The peers may have no mutually acceptable protocol or cipher, the certificate may not be trusted for the requested hostname, the server may have selected the wrong virtual host, or a device in between may have interrupted the exchange.
When a CDN or reverse proxy is involved, there are two handshakes: client-to-edge and edge-to-origin. A site can work when contacted directly while the edge cannot negotiate with the origin. Cloudflare calls a failed edge-to-origin negotiation Error 525 and describes these messages as indicating that the SSL/TLS handshake failed.

Start by identifying the failing connection
Do not replace certificates or weaken TLS settings until you know which connection is failing. Record the exact details while the problem is reproducible:
- The complete browser, game client, API client, or command-line error.
- The UTC timestamp, hostname, port, and client network.
- Whether the hostname resolves directly to the origin or to a CDN/reverse-proxy address.
- Whether direct access by origin address succeeds when the correct hostname and SNI are supplied.
- Recent certificate renewals, DNS changes, web-server edits, firewall changes, or proxy-policy changes.
Test from more than one representative client when possible. If only one old client fails, its TLS capabilities may be the issue; if every client fails, investigate the server, certificate, routing, or proxy path. Preserve the timestamp so you can correlate the event with web-server, load-balancer, firewall, and proxy logs.
Run an SNI-aware handshake test
Use OpenSSL from a controlled machine and include the hostname in -servername. That option is essential when multiple HTTPS names share one IP address; it tells the server which certificate and virtual host to select.
openssl s_client -connect example.com:443 -servername example.com -showcerts
Replace both occurrences of example.com with the failing hostname. The command should show a completed handshake, a negotiated protocol and cipher, the peer certificate, and a verification result. Save the output, including the certificate chain, for comparison after each change.
How to read the result
- If the connection cannot be established at all, check DNS resolution, routing, firewalls, security groups, and whether anything is listening on port 443.
- If a certificate is returned for a different hostname, the server selected the wrong SNI virtual host or the client did not send SNI.
- If verification reports an expired, not-yet-valid, self-signed, or otherwise untrusted chain, correct the certificate and chain rather than changing protocol policy.
- If the peers report no shared protocol or cipher, compare their enabled TLS versions and cipher policies.
- If the certificate looks correct but the proxy still reports failure, repeat the test against the origin endpoint used by the proxy, not only the public edge address.
A successful OpenSSL result proves that one client, at one time, can negotiate. It does not prove that every game client, operating system, proxy location, or origin path will do so, so retest with affected clients after remediation.
Validate the certificate before changing TLS policy
Certificate state is the first-line check because a client cannot complete a trusted handshake with a certificate it rejects.

Check validity dates and activation
Confirm that the leaf certificate is currently active and has not expired. An expired SSL certificate is not trusted by a browser, so the TLS handshake cannot proceed. A newly issued certificate can also fail if the server or certificate service has not activated it yet; verify the deployment status and the certificate actually presented by the endpoint, rather than assuming the newly issued file is live.
Check hostname coverage
The certificate must cover the exact hostname the client requests. A name such as api.example.com is not automatically covered by a certificate for example.com, and a basic wildcard only covers the label level for which it was issued. Multi-level names such as region.api.example.com may require an explicitly listed name or a suitable certificate policy. Compare the requested name with the certificate’s Subject Alternative Name entries.
Serve the complete chain
Install the server certificate together with every required intermediate certificate in the order expected by clients. A server may appear to have a valid leaf certificate while clients fail because the intermediate is missing. OpenSSL’s -showcerts output lets you see what the endpoint actually sends; compare that chain with the issuer requirements for the certificate.
Confirm the private key and endpoint
The configured private key must match the deployed certificate. Also make sure you are inspecting the endpoint clients use: a load balancer, CDN origin, staging listener, and production listener can each present different certificates. If only one address is wrong, correct that node or synchronization process instead of changing the certificate on every server.
Correct SNI and virtual-host selection
SNI allows one IP address to serve multiple HTTPS names. During the handshake, the client sends the requested server name; the web server then selects the matching certificate and virtual-host configuration. A missing or incorrectly ordered default host can make the server return a certificate for another site.
NGINX checks
Inspect the HTTPS server block selected for the hostname. Verify all of the following:

After correcting the configuration, validate it with nginx -t, reload NGINX gracefully, and rerun the SNI-aware OpenSSL command. A graceful reload limits interruption while ensuring new handshakes use the corrected certificate.
Apache checks
In Apache, inspect the name-based virtual host selected for the hostname and its mod_ssl settings. Confirm SSLCertificateFile, the chain configuration, and the private key correspond to the intended site. Review SSLCipherSuite, enabled protocol settings, and any configured Diffie-Hellman parameters. Ensure the virtual host is enabled and that the running process has reloaded the file you edited.
When several Apache virtual hosts share an address, test each public hostname separately. A default virtual host can mask a missing ServerName or ServerAlias and make the wrong certificate appear only for particular clients.
Align TLS versions and cipher suites
The client and server must share at least one supported TLS protocol version and one compatible cipher suite. A restrictive minimum version or cipher list can remove every common choice, producing a handshake failure even when the certificate is perfect.
Use compatible modern settings
Compare the server’s enabled protocol versions and cipher policy with the affected client’s capabilities. Check NGINX SSL protocol and cipher directives or Apache’s protocol and SSLCipherSuite settings, along with any policy inherited from a load balancer or operating-system crypto profile. Change the narrowest setting that restores an overlap, then retest.
Do not permanently re-enable obsolete protocols merely to make one legacy client connect. If an old game client or embedded device cannot use the server’s approved policy, update that client, isolate it behind a separately managed endpoint, or document the compatibility requirement and its security cost.

Test negotiation rather than guessing
Run the OpenSSL test after each protocol or cipher change and record the negotiated values. Test from a current client and from the client that originally failed. A server-side success with one cipher does not prove that a proxy, Java runtime, operating-system library, or older client can use the same choice.
Investigate CDN, reverse-proxy, and tunnel paths
A proxy creates a separate TLS session to the origin. When a direct request succeeds but the proxied request fails, focus on the edge-to-origin leg instead of changing the public certificate first.
What Cloudflare Error 525 means
Error 525 indicates that Cloudflare could not complete the TLS handshake with the origin server. The edge may be reachable and present a valid certificate to visitors while the origin rejects Cloudflare’s connection because of certificate coverage, an incomplete chain, protocol or cipher incompatibility, SNI routing, firewall interference, or a service that is not listening correctly.
Checks for the origin leg
- Identify the exact origin hostname and port configured for the proxy. Test that endpoint directly with OpenSSL and the origin hostname in
-servername. - Confirm the origin certificate covers the hostname the proxy uses, is active and unexpired, and includes required intermediates.
- Verify that the proxy’s DNS and origin settings point to the intended server rather than an old address or staging node.
- Review the selected encryption mode and origin-certificate validation requirements. The mode must match what the origin actually presents.
- Check firewall rules, allowlists, rate limits, and TLS-inspection devices that might block or alter proxy connections.
- Compare origin logs with the timestamp of the 525 response. A missing log entry suggests that the connection was blocked before it reached the web server.
TLS-inspection proxies can terminate one handshake and create another. If such a device is present, test around it or inspect its trust store and policy; do not assume a certificate that is valid at the origin will be the certificate visible to the client.

Some failures occur only with a particular TLS library or runtime. Apache documents Java-client failures associated with incompatible Diffie-Hellman parameters. In that case, review the server’s cipher ordering and DH parameter configuration, and compare the Java runtime’s supported groups with the server policy.
Update the web server and TLS library where practical, then retest with the affected runtime. Keep changes targeted: replacing an outdated library or correcting DH parameters is safer than opening a broad set of weak ciphers for every client.

Use logs and packet captures when symptoms conflict
Enable or consult the web server’s TLS error logging at a level appropriate for troubleshooting. Look for certificate-loading errors, unknown SNI names, protocol-version alerts, no-shared-cipher messages, handshake timeouts, and client resets. Correlate those entries with load-balancer, firewall, and proxy logs.
If logs do not reveal the cause, capture the failing traffic at the relevant leg. Cloudflare recommends packet captures when the root cause remains unclear. A capture can show whether the ClientHello arrived, which SNI name and protocol versions were offered, whether the server sent a certificate, and which side issued the fatal alert. Capture only the affected connection, protect any sensitive data, and remove captures after analysis according to your operational policy.

Verify the repair and prevent a recurrence
After making one controlled change, rerun the SNI-aware OpenSSL command against the affected hostname. Confirm the negotiated protocol and cipher, the exact certificate names and dates, and the complete chain. Then test through every path users rely on: direct origin, CDN or reverse proxy, load-balancer address, and any game client or API runtime that previously failed.
Check more than one origin node if traffic is distributed. A single unsynchronized certificate or TLS policy can make the problem intermittent. Reload or restart only the component that needs the change, and record the configuration version so a deployment process does not restore the broken file.
Set monitoring for certificate expiration and endpoint handshakes. Monitoring should send SNI for each hostname, validate the chain, and test the proxied path as well as the direct path. Alert early enough to renew and deploy a certificate before its activation or expiration date becomes an outage. Keep a tested rollback and document the approved protocol and cipher policy so emergency fixes do not reintroduce obsolete settings.
Quick Recap
A concise troubleshooting checklist
- Write down the exact error, hostname, port, timestamp, client, and network path.
- Separate client-to-edge from edge-to-origin testing.
- Run
openssl s_client -connect example.com:443 -servername example.com -showcertswith the affected hostname. - Check certificate activation, expiration, hostname coverage, private-key match, and intermediate chain.
- Verify NGINX or Apache listener, virtual-host selection, SNI name, and certificate directives.
- Compare client and server TLS versions and cipher suites; restore a secure overlap.
- For a proxy or tunnel, test the origin endpoint and inspect encryption mode, DNS, firewall, and inspection devices.
- For runtime-specific failures, review the TLS library, cipher ordering, and DH parameters.
- Use correlated logs or a focused packet capture when the handshake still cannot be explained.
- Retest all affected paths and clients, then enable expiry and endpoint monitoring.
