Every installation has root (UID 0), while service accounts, groups, UID boundaries and login shells vary by distribution, release and local policy. The safe way to decide whether an account matters is to inspect its numeric UID/GID, NSS source, processes, files and package ownership—not to delete a familiar-looking name.

For most modern systemd systems, UIDs 1–999 are reserved for system users and UIDs 1000 and above are normally used for human users. UID 65534 is the nobody overflow identity. These are conventions, not guarantees: older systems used boundaries such as 99/100 or 499/500, and administrators can change the policy.

A user account is an identity recognized by the kernel and name-service system. The kernel ultimately enforces permissions with numeric UIDs and GIDs; names such as root or www-data are human-readable mappings. A group supplies a GID and a set of members that can share access to files, devices and services.
Some identities are created as static records in local files. Others come from LDAP, NIS, Active Directory integration or systemd’s dynamic-user mechanisms. A name shown by an administration command therefore does not always correspond to a literal line in /etc/passwd. Treat the account database and the name-service configuration as one system.

How to read /etc/passwd and /etc/group
The seven fields in /etc/passwd
The passwd database is a colon-separated text file describing login accounts. Each record has exactly seven fields:
| Field | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Name | alice |
The account name used by commands and name-service lookups. |
| 2. Password marker | x |
Usually a marker pointing to the protected hash in /etc/shadow. An asterisk blocks login through login(1), but does not stop every non-login execution path. |
| 3. UID | 1000 |
The numeric identity used by the kernel for file ownership and process credentials. |
| 4. GID | 1000 |
The account’s primary group ID. |
| 5. GECOS | Alice Example |
Informational contact or description data; it has no permission effect. |
| 6. Home directory | /home/alice |
The directory assigned as HOME for a login session. |
| 7. Login shell | /bin/bash |
The program started for an interactive login. If the path does not exist, login(1) cannot complete a normal login. |
Do not grant write access to this file to ordinary users. It must be readable for account-to-name lookups, while modifications belong to the superuser and account-management tools. A line such as daemon:x:2:2:daemon:/sbin:/usr/sbin/nologin describes an identity that owns files or runs a service without being intended for interactive use.

The four fields in /etc/group
The group database uses group_name:password:GID:user_list. The password field is a legacy facility and is commonly empty. The final field is a comma-separated list of supplementary members.
The GID in a passwd record determines the primary group. Supplementary groups come from group records and from other configured NSS sources. Consequently, a user can have one primary group while belonging to many supplementary groups. Check effective membership with id USER rather than reading only one file.
getent passwd USER
getent group GROUP
id USER
ls -ln /path/to/file
stat -c '%u:%g %n' /path/to/file
getent asks the configured Name Service Switch (NSS), so it includes local files and supported remote or dynamic providers. The numeric forms of ls and stat reveal ownership even when a name cannot be resolved.

The familiar built-in identities
root: UID 0
root is the superuser identity, UID 0. The kernel and many privileged programs treat UID 0 specially, so changing its name does not remove its authority. Keep the account available for recovery and administration. Restrict remote root access through your SSH and authentication policy rather than deleting or renaming the record.

The Linux Standard Base requires the root name and documents bin and daemon as legacy identities retained for compatibility. They may own historical files or support older packages. Modern services should use separate, dedicated UIDs and GIDs so a compromise of one daemon does not automatically grant access to another daemon’s files.
nobody and nogroup
UID 65534 is the conventional overflow identity, commonly named nobody. It is used when a subsystem cannot map an external identity to a local UID, including some NFS and user-namespace situations. A distribution may call the corresponding group nogroup. Files owned by 65534 usually indicate an identity-mapping problem or an intentionally unprivileged operation; investigate the cause before changing ownership.
Optional distribution accounts
Names such as adm, lp, mail, man, operator, sync, shutdown and halt are conventions, not universal requirements. A package or script must not assume that every one exists. Their presence, shell, UID and group membership differ across distributions and releases.
| Identity | Typical purpose | Administrative treatment |
|---|---|---|
root (UID 0) |
System-wide administration and recovery | Preserve; control access through authentication and privilege policy. |
bin, daemon |
Historical compatibility and legacy ownership | Do not remove solely because no process currently uses the name. |
nobody (UID 65534) |
Overflow or deliberately unprivileged execution | Preserve the identity; diagnose unexpected 65534 ownership. |
| Package-specific service UID | Least-privilege daemon execution | Keep non-interactive and dedicated; remove only with the owning package and service. |

| Numeric range | Common interpretation | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | root |
Reserved superuser identity. |
| 1–999 | System users and groups | Common systemd policy; local configuration can differ. |
| 1000–65533 and 65536–4294967294 | Regular or otherwise non-system identities | Typical systemd interpretation, not a guarantee that every UID is a human account. |
| 65534 | nobody overflow UID |
Special unmappable-identity value. |
Older distributions commonly used 99/100 or 499/500 as the system-to-regular boundary. The 2004 LSB specification described static system UIDs 0–99 and an administrator or post-installation allocation range of 100–499. These historical ranges explain why a low UID is evidence of a system identity but not proof of what created it.
Always inspect the actual account database and allocation policy. A locally created service may have a UID above 999, while a migrated human account may retain a lower number. Numeric IDs, not names, decide access to existing files.
systemd-created and dynamic identities
systemd-sysusers
systemd-sysusers declaratively creates service users and groups, and can add users to groups during package installation or boot. Configuration records support users, groups, memberships and numeric ranges. Vendor files normally live in /usr/lib/sysusers.d; local administrator overrides belong in /etc/sysusers.d. Runtime-generated definitions can appear in /run/sysusers.d, with site-local packaged data also supported under /usr/local/lib/sysusers.d.
Sysusers is for system accounts, not for creating regular human users. Use your distribution’s normal user-management tools for people, home directories, passwords and interactive policy.

nss-systemd and synthesized records
The nss-systemd module resolves dynamic users and can synthesize records for root and nobody even when ordinary passwd or group files are missing. Therefore getent passwd can display an identity that is not a literal line in /etc/passwd. When diagnosing a service owner, check NSS configuration and the service definition instead of editing local files until the source is known.

System users and groups needed during early boot must be resolvable without relying on the network. Regular users, by contrast, may come from remote databases when an early-boot cache is available. This distinction matters on directory-backed servers and during network outages.
How to audit an account before changing it
Use this sequence for any account or group you are considering disabling, renaming or deleting:
- Resolve it through NSS. Run
getent passwd NAME,getent group NAMEandid NAME. Record the numeric UID and every GID. - Check login and password state. Inspect the shell and shadow status with your distribution’s supported tools. A shell such as
/usr/sbin/nologinsignals non-interactive intent, but the path differs by distribution. - Find running processes. Use
ps -u NAME -fand inspect service units, sockets, timers and containers that may run under the UID. A service can start later even if no process is running now. - Locate owned files. Search relevant local filesystems by numeric ID, for example
find /srv /var -xdev -uid UID -lsand the equivalent-gid GID. Exclude pseudo-filesystems and understand the cost of scanning large volumes. - Identify the owning package. Use the package manager’s file-owner query, such as
dpkg -S /pathorrpm -qf /path, according to the host. Package scripts may recreate a deleted account on upgrade. - Check scheduled and indirect use. Review cron entries, systemd unit files, ACLs, exports, backup jobs, chroots and application configuration for the name and numeric ID.
- Back up before recovery edits. Preserve copies of account databases and record file ownership. Prefer
useradd,usermod,groupaddand distribution tooling over hand-editing.
Disable, lock or delete: choose the least destructive action
| Action | What it changes | When it fits | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Set a non-login shell | Interactive login invokes /usr/sbin/nologin or another deliberate shell |
Service accounts that should never receive an interactive session | Does not stop already running processes or every non-login execution path. |
| Lock the password | Password authentication is disabled by supported account tools | Emergency containment or accounts that must retain ownership | Keys, tokens, cron, services and other paths may still operate. |
| Disable a service | Prevents a managed unit from starting according to its service policy | Unused daemon, after confirming dependencies | Does not remove the UID, files or package expectations. |
| Delete the user or group | Removes the name mapping; files may retain an orphaned numeric owner | Only after package removal and complete dependency review | Can break upgrades, startup, ACLs or data access; package installation may recreate it. |
For a service account, changing the shell with usermod -s /usr/sbin/nologin NAME is usually safer than deletion, provided that path exists on the host. Use passwd -l NAME or the distribution’s equivalent when password locking is required, and verify the resulting authentication behavior. Never assume either measure terminates a process; stop and disable the service separately, then inspect descendants and sockets.
Why names and permissions can disagree between servers
Two hosts can show different names for the same numeric owner, or the same name for different numeric IDs. Copying files between them can therefore produce apparently wrong ownership even though the kernel is enforcing the copied numbers exactly. For migrations, document numeric UID/GID mappings, preserve ACLs and extended attributes, and reconcile identities before granting access.
NSS order also affects results. A local /etc/passwd entry may be consulted before LDAP, while another host may reverse that order. Compare /etc/nsswitch.conf, directory-service configuration and caches when getent, id and application behavior disagree.

Common failure symptoms and recovery
Files show a number instead of a name
The numeric UID or GID has no current name mapping, or NSS is unavailable. Run getent passwd UID and getent group GID. Restore the intended account or correct the directory-service connection before changing file ownership.
A daemon fails after an account change
Check the unit’s configured User=, Group=, supplementary groups, home and runtime directories, and package scripts. Recreate the service identity through the package’s sysusers definition or supported tooling rather than inventing a different UID.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
A supposedly locked account still runs jobs
Password locking affects password authentication, not necessarily SSH keys, scheduled jobs, setuid helpers, containers or an already running service. Audit each execution path and stop the relevant service or scheduler.
Ownership changed after a restore or migration
Compare numeric IDs with ls -ln and stat. Correct the UID/GID mapping first; a name-only rename can hide a real permission mismatch.
Quick Recap
Server-admin checklist
- Preserve UID 0 and understand every path that can obtain its privileges.
- Use
getentandidfor NSS-aware answers, not only local-file parsing. - Record numeric UID/GID values when auditing files, backups and migrations.
- Expect systemd service identities to be declared in sysusers files or synthesized dynamically.
- Keep daemon accounts non-interactive and separate them by service where practical.
- Do not assume optional names, shells, admin groups or UID boundaries are portable between distributions.
- Before deletion, inventory processes, units, timers, sockets, files, ACLs, exports and package ownership.
- Prefer reversible locking or service changes; delete an identity only when its package and data dependencies are demonstrably gone.
