Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Windows says a game cannot start because steam_api.dll or steam_api64.dll is missing, do not download the file from a random DLL website. For a legitimate Steam installation, the safest first fix is to restore the affected game’s files through Steam: open the game’s Properties, choose Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files.
If verification does not solve the problem, check antivirus quarantine, install the game’s bundled runtimes, repair Visual C++ or legacy DirectX when the filename points to those components, and only then consider reinstalling the game.

What the Steam API DLL error means
steam_api.dll and steam_api64.dll are normally game-local Steamworks files. They allow a game to communicate with the Steam client; they are not ordinary Windows or DirectX system files. A Microsoft-hosted answer specifically distinguishes steam_api64.dll from Windows and DirectX components: Microsoft guidance.

When only one Steam game fails, the problem is usually local to that game’s installation, its dependencies, or security software. If every Steam game fails, investigate Steam permissions, antivirus interference, damaged Windows components, and the Steam installation itself.
Before you start: avoid unsafe DLL downloads
Do not download an individual Steam API DLL from a DLL repository, “DLL fixer,” registry cleaner, or unofficial forum. Such files can be malicious, the wrong architecture, incompatible with the game, or modified to bypass Steam licensing.
The steps below apply to games legitimately installed through your Steam library. They are not instructions for repairing cracked, pirated, repacked, or otherwise unauthorized copies. Steam also warns users to obtain software only from official, trusted sources: Steam’s security guidance.
1. Restart Steam and Windows
- Exit the game.
- In Steam, select Steam → Exit. Closing the window alone may leave Steam running.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Steam and launch the game from your Library.
A restart can clear a temporary Steam client, file-locking, or initialization problem. Steam includes restarting Steam and Windows in its launch troubleshooting guidance: Steam Support.
2. Verify the game files in Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish, then restart Steam and test the game.
Steam’s menu labels can change slightly between client versions, but the stable function name is Verify integrity of game files. Steam compares the installation with its servers and can reacquire missing or corrupted files: Steam’s file-verification instructions.
If Steam reports that files failed to validate and will be reacquired, that is normally the repair process working. Verification can overwrite mods, ReShade files, trainers, modified executables, or other unofficial changes.
3. Check antivirus quarantine
Security software sometimes removes a legitimate game DLL after detecting it as suspicious. Steam identifies antivirus quarantine as a frequent cause of missing game files: Steam’s missing-file guidance.
In Windows Security:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for a recent detection connected with the game folder or missing DLL.
- Check the detection name and file location before taking action.
Do not automatically restore a quarantined file. First confirm that the game was installed through your official Steam library, scan the system, and consider submitting the detection to Microsoft or the antivirus vendor. If the file is confirmed as a false positive, restore it if appropriate and run Steam’s verification again.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection. If a temporary exclusion is genuinely necessary, limit it to the affected game folder, use it only while diagnosing the issue, and remove it if the detection cannot be explained. A DLL from an unofficial game download may be an actual threat rather than a false positive.
4. Run the game’s bundled installers
Many Steam games include secondary installers for DirectX, Visual C++, .NET, PhysX, OpenAL, XNA, or other legacy components. In the game’s Steam installation folder, look for paths or files such as:
_CommonRedist
DirectX
DXSETUP.exe
VC_redist.x86.exe
VC_redist.x64.exe
PhysX
DotNet
The default location is often:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon<Game Title>
Your library may be on another drive or in a different folder. Open the game’s Steam properties and use its installed-files options to locate the actual directory. Run only installers bundled with the legitimate game or downloaded from the relevant vendor’s official website. Steam documents these secondary installers in its support material and developer documentation: Steam common redistributables.

If the filename is a DirectX DLL
Errors naming d3dx9_*.dll commonly involve legacy DirectX 9 components. Having a newer DirectX version does not necessarily provide every older optional component required by an older game. Run the game’s bundled DirectX installer, or follow Microsoft’s official missing DirectX DLL guidance and DirectX installation guidance. Do not replace an individual DirectX DLL from a third-party site.
If the filename is a Visual C++ DLL
For errors naming VCRUNTIME140.dll, VCRUNTIME140_1.dll, MSVCP140.dll, MSVCP120.dll, or MSVCR120.dll, repair or install the matching Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable instead of copying the DLL manually.
Microsoft’s official current v14 installers are:
Run the installer and choose Repair if offered, or Install if it is absent. On 64-bit Windows, installing both x86 and x64 may be appropriate because games can be 32-bit or 64-bit. Do not assume the newest package fixes every older game: Visual C++ 2010, 2012, 2013, and earlier runtimes can remain side by side. Check the game’s _CommonRedist folder and Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ downloads.
5. Test the executable directly, only as a diagnostic
Open the game’s installation folder and double-click its main executable once. Record any new error message, then return to Steam and launch the game normally.

This can reveal a more specific missing dependency, but it is not necessarily a permanent solution. Direct launching may bypass Steam authentication, overlays, launch options, anti-cheat initialization, or required parameters. Steam describes this diagnostic approach here: Steam’s launch troubleshooting guidance.
6. Close conflicting overlays, mods, and utilities
Temporarily close nonessential software and test again. Possible conflicts include third-party antivirus, ransomware protection, overlay software, hardware-monitoring tools, screen recorders, injectors, mod managers, debuggers, and sandboxing or virtualization tools.

Also temporarily remove or disable mods and modified launchers. Restore the official game files with Steam before testing. Do not uninstall security software as a first-line fix.
7. Repair Windows system files when the evidence points to Windows
steam_api.dll and steam_api64.dll are usually game-local files, so System File Checker will not normally restore them. Use Windows repair commands when several applications report missing system DLLs, Windows behaves abnormally, or the filename is clearly a Windows component.
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the game. Microsoft explains the relationship between DISM and SFC in its System File Checker guidance. If SFC cannot repair files, read its final message, apply Windows updates, run DISM before trying SFC again if necessary, and consider System Restore, an in-place Windows repair, or professional support when many applications are affected.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Reinstall the game only when targeted repairs fail
Reinstalling is reasonable if verification repeatedly fails, the download was interrupted, the game directory is extensively corrupted, the library was moved incorrectly, or storage or permission errors prevent Steam from replacing files.
Before uninstalling:
- Back up saves that are not synchronized through Steam Cloud.
- Record launch options and important configuration settings.
- Note which mods you use.
- Confirm the library drive has free space and is not reporting errors.
- Confirm you are working with the actual Steam library path.
Reinstalling one game is more targeted than reinstalling the Steam client. Reinstall Steam itself only when broader Steam files or permissions are damaged and the game-focused steps have not helped. Steam’s launch troubleshooting documentation includes reinstalling or refreshing Steam files as a later option: Steam Support.
Use the filename to choose the next step
steam_api.dll,steam_api64.dll, orsteam_api64r.dll: verify the game, check antivirus quarantine, run bundled installers, then reinstall if necessary.d3dx9_*.dll: install the game’s legacy DirectX components using Microsoft’s official guidance.VCRUNTIME*.dll,MSVCP*.dll, orMSVCR*.dll: repair the appropriate Visual C++ architecture and check for older bundled versions.- A Windows system DLL: run DISM, SFC, and Windows Update; investigate broader system corruption or malware.
- “Entry point not found” rather than “DLL missing”: restore the complete official game installation. This can indicate mismatched versions, wrong architecture, outdated mods, or an incompatible DLL, and is not the same as a simple missing-file error.
When verification says everything is fine
If the DLL exists but the error remains, the file may be corrupt, blocked, the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit version, missing a dependent runtime, or not the file the game is actually loading. Other possibilities include antivirus deleting it immediately after verification, a second installation of the game, a mod or launcher loading another copy, or a game-specific compatibility problem.
Check recent changes such as an antivirus definition update, Windows or driver update, Steam update, new overlay, mod, disk cleanup, library move, or game patch. Treat these as clues, not proof of causation.
When to contact the developer or Steam Support
If one game still fails after official file verification, dependency repair, antivirus review, and a clean test without mods or overlays, the problem may require a game-specific fix. Steam notes that launch failures can depend on individual hardware and software configurations and may need developer support: Steam’s launch troubleshooting page.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why does antivirus delete the Steam API DLL?
Security software may mistake a legitimate game component for a threat, but an unofficial copy may contain a genuinely malicious or modified file. Check the detection and installation source before restoring anything.
Do I need both x86 and x64 Visual C++ packages?
On 64-bit Windows, both may be appropriate because games can use different architectures. Follow the game’s bundled installers and Microsoft’s package requirements.
Is steam_api64.dll a Windows file?
No. It is normally a game-local Steamworks component used to communicate with Steam.
Should I reinstall Steam first?
Usually not for a single-game failure. Verify and, if needed, reinstall the affected game before considering a Steam client repair.
