Nintendo Switch 2 launched in the U.S. on June 5, 2025, for $449.99. The $499.99 Mario Kart World bundle includes the game as a download code. Nintendo’s successor keeps the original Switch’s handheld, tabletop, and TV modes, but adds a larger 1080p LCD, substantially faster hardware, 256GB of storage, magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers with mouse controls, GameChat, GameShare, and Switch 2-exclusive software.

This guide reflects the console’s post-launch position as of August 18, 2026, including its compatibility limits, accessory requirements, upgrade costs, and the situations in which buying one makes sense.

What is Nintendo Switch 2?

Nintendo Switch 2 is the direct successor to Nintendo Switch, not a new category of console. It works as a handheld, a tabletop system with its adjustable stand, or a docked console connected to a television.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

The important change is broader than simply “a more powerful Switch.” Nintendo combines a hardware upgrade with new controllers, mouse-style input, communication tools, digital-game management, stricter storage requirements, enhanced editions of selected games, and software that cannot run on the original Switch.

Release date, prices, and box contents

The U.S. system launched on June 5, 2025, at an MSRP of $449.99. The $499.99 bundle adds a download code for Mario Kart World; the standard console package does not include that game.

Japan also received Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. The Japanese-language model launched at ¥49,980, while a multi-language model was listed at ¥69,980. The Japanese-language model is restricted to Japanese system language and Nintendo Accounts set to Japan, so its lower price should not be treated as a universally import-friendly alternative. The U.S. standard package contains:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 console
  • Left and right Joy-Con 2 controllers
  • Joy-Con 2 Grip
  • Two Joy-Con 2 Straps
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Dock
  • Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable
  • Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter
  • USB-C charging cable

A camera, microSD Express card, Nintendo Switch Online membership, Pro Controller, and GameCube-style controller are separate purchases.

Hardware and display improvements

The built-in screen is a 7.9-inch 1920 × 1080 LCD. It is larger and higher-resolution than the original Switch display, but it is not OLED. Players upgrading from a Switch OLED should therefore expect a sharper, larger screen rather than the OLED panel’s display characteristics.

Nintendo says Switch 2 has significantly faster CPU and GPU performance than the original system. The official announcement cited here does not establish CPU clock speeds, GPU architecture, RAM capacity, or a manufacturer-confirmed FLOPS figure, so third-party estimates should not be presented as official specifications.

The console has 256GB of internal storage—eight times the original Switch’s launch storage according to Nintendo. That capacity is not entirely available for games because system software and other data occupy some space.

The redesigned stand is freely adjustable, and a second USB-C port on the top of the console makes charging more practical during tabletop play. The dock supports output of up to 4K resolution and 120 frames per second, but these are maximum capabilities, not promises that every game renders at native 4K or runs at 120fps. The game, display, resolution mode, and frame-rate target all matter.

Joy-Con 2: magnetic attachment and mouse controls

Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically to the console and still function as conventional detachable controllers. Their headline addition is mouse functionality: compatible games can use a Joy-Con 2 like a mouse when it is moved across a suitable surface.

Mouse controls may be useful for strategy, simulation, aiming, and other software designed around more precise pointing. They are not a universal replacement for traditional controls. Game support is required, and the experience varies by title. The right Joy-Con 2 also includes a C button for opening GameChat.

Rank #2
Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con - Handheld Gaming Console
  • 6.2” LCD screen
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends

GameChat, cameras, and online requirements

GameChat supports voice chat for up to 12 people, screen sharing for up to four friends, and video chat when a compatible USB-C camera is connected. Speech-to-text and safety controls, including reporting, are included. Users under 16 require parent or guardian approval through the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app.

Nintendo’s launch announcement made GameChat available without Nintendo Switch Online only through the end of March 2026. As of August 18, 2026, Nintendo Switch Online is required for GameChat unless Nintendo has subsequently changed that policy. The current subscription price should be checked on Nintendo’s live Nintendo Switch Online page.

A camera is optional. It is needed for video chat, but not for voice chat or screen sharing. Nintendo’s Switch 2 camera is sold separately.

Backward compatibility: what works and what does not

Switch 2 plays compatible physical game cards and digital Nintendo Switch purchases. Nintendo Accounts and eligible digital purchases carry over through Nintendo’s account and eShop systems. However, backward compatibility is not universal: some games are unsupported, while others may work only partially or require title-specific updates.

Check Nintendo’s game-by-game compatibility information before assuming a particular title, accessory, or peripheral will work. Third-party publishers may also control the details of their software.

Existing Switch games can fall into three upgrade categories:

  1. Free updates: Improvements are added without a separate upgrade purchase.
  2. Paid upgrade packs: Enhanced graphics, performance, content, or features require an additional payment for owners of the original game.
  3. Switch 2 Edition releases: New buyers receive the original game and its Switch 2 enhancements together.

Examples announced by Nintendo include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, and Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV. Upgrade contents and prices vary by game, and buying an upgrade is not generally mandatory to play the original Switch version.

Accessory compatibility

Do not assume that every Switch accessory transfers to Switch 2. Nintendo’s support documentation gives the following practical picture:

Accessory Compatibility
Original Switch Joy-Con Can pair wirelessly, but cannot attach to the Switch 2 console
Original Switch Pro Controller Can be used wirelessly
Original Switch dock Not compatible for Switch 2 TV play
Original Switch AC adapter Can charge Switch 2 directly, but cannot provide Switch 2 docked TV mode
Original standard microSD card Not suitable for installing Switch 2 software
Original Joy-Con Grip and straps Not interchangeable with Joy-Con 2 in the same way
GameCube Controller Adapter Compatible in TV mode through the Switch 2 dock
Classic Nintendo controllers Usable with compatible games

Original Joy-Con charging accessories and some other legacy peripherals also have limitations. Consult Nintendo’s accessory compatibility guidance before reusing older equipment.

Storage: why microSD Express matters

Switch 2 requires microSD Express cards for additional Switch 2 game storage. A conventional microSD card from an original Switch should not be recommended as expansion storage for installing Switch 2 software.

Nintendo says an existing conventional microSD card can still be used to view screenshots and videos captured on an original Switch. It should not be treated as a transferable Switch 2 game library. When buying storage, look specifically for the microSD Express designation rather than relying on a generic “high-speed microSD” label.

Storage needs depend on whether you buy physical games, digital games, or physical releases that still require substantial downloads. Digital-heavy owners are the clearest candidates for a microSD Express card.

GameShare and virtual game cards

GameShare lets an owner of a compatible game invite other players who do not own it. Nintendo says local GameShare can work with Switch 2 or original Switch systems, while online GameShare combined with GameChat is available between Switch 2 systems. It is game-dependent and is not unrestricted digital lending.

Virtual game cards provide a controlled way to manage digital purchases through a Nintendo Account. Games can be loaded onto one of two linked consoles, played offline once loaded, and made available to other users on the console. Eligible digital games can also be lent or borrowed among members of the same Nintendo Account family group.

This system is not unrestricted resale or unrestricted account sharing; it operates within Nintendo’s linked-console and family-group rules. See Nintendo’s account and software guidance.

Games and the Switch 2 software library

Switch 2’s software falls into several groups:

  • Switch 2 exclusives: Games built for the new hardware, including Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza.
  • Switch 2 Edition games: Existing Switch games with enhanced performance, graphics, content, or features.
  • Compatible Switch games: Original physical and digital games that work under Nintendo’s compatibility rules.
  • Third-party software: Games whose performance and compatibility details may vary by publisher.
  • GameCube classics: A growing Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics library for subscribers to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.

First-party examples include:

  • Mario Kart World — available at Switch 2 launch.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition — available at launch.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition — available at launch.
  • Donkey Kong Bananza — released July 17, 2025.
  • Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV — released July 24, 2025.
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World — released August 28, 2025.
  • Metroid Prime 4: Beyond — available in Switch and Switch 2 versions, with enhanced Switch 2 modes.
  • Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition — released in late 2025.
  • Drag x Drive — a Switch 2 online 3v3 game announced by Nintendo.

Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour is a launch-day eShop purchase, not a free pack-in game. Release dates and upgrade availability can change, so check the relevant current game page before purchasing.

Nintendo GameCube classics

Switch 2 owners with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack receive access to the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics library. Nintendo identified F-Zero GX, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and SOULCALIBUR II among the initial entries.

The console alone does not include this library, and the basic Nintendo Switch Online plan is not enough; the Expansion Pack is required. A dedicated GameCube-style controller is optional and sold separately. The catalog can grow or change over time.

Should you buy Nintendo Switch 2?

Buy it if:

  • You do not own a Switch and want Nintendo’s current hybrid platform.
  • You want Switch 2-exclusive games.
  • You play demanding games that benefit from stronger hardware.
  • You want a larger, sharper handheld display.
  • You primarily buy digital games and value 256GB of internal storage.
  • You want GameChat, GameShare, or Switch 2-specific online features.
  • You are interested in enhanced editions of selected Zelda, Mario, Kirby, and other games.

Think twice if:

  • Your existing Switch library performs well enough and you do not want Switch 2-exclusive software.
  • You already own a Switch OLED and do not care about the new games or features.
  • You expect your old dock, standard microSD card, and Joy-Con accessories to transfer directly.
  • You object to paying for selected game upgrades.
  • You mainly play docked and have no interest in compatible 4K or high-refresh-rate output.
  • You expect every game to run at 4K and 120fps.

For a new buyer, Switch 2 is the straightforward choice because it is Nintendo’s current hybrid platform and the only way to access its exclusive software. For an original Switch owner, the upgrade is most compelling when the larger 1080p screen, better performance, exclusive games, or specific new features matter more than the added hardware and accessory costs.
