1. Check who is playing the game
Open the locked game in your Steam Client and check the displayed player. Steam says the game remains locked until that person stops playing. This is an availability limit, not a hardware fault. Steam Families User Guide & FAQ
2. Check whether another family copy is available
Steam Families allows members to play different games from the family library at the same time. Playing the same game concurrently depends on how many copies the family owns and whether another copy is available. If a family member owns another copy, try launching that copy. If none is available, Steam’s stated options are to wait until the current player stops or buy another copy. Steam Families User Guide & FAQ
3. If only one game or DLC is affected, check sharing eligibility
A game that cannot be shared is different from an eligible game that is temporarily in use: waiting will not change a title’s sharing eligibility. Steam says some games and content cannot be shared because of technical limitations. Some titles require a third-party account or subscription and therefore may not be available through family sharing. Check the game’s eligibility in Steam’s Steam Families FAQ.

4. Use offline play only when the game supports it
Steam says family-library games can be played offline only if the specific game supports Family Sharing. Offline Mode is not a way to free a copy that another family member is using. Games that need an active connection or an external launcher may not work offline. Steam Offline Mode instructions
Prepare games before going offline
- Start Steam while online and confirm the game files are updated.
- Launch each game you plan to play offline at least once, and make sure your credentials are saved on that computer.
- In Steam, select Steam > Go Offline.
These steps prepare supported games for offline use; they do not guarantee that every title or family-library game will work without a connection. Steam Offline Mode instructions
5. Get help if Steam shows an inconsistent lock
Steam’s documented remedy for an in-use copy is to wait until the current player stops or use another available family copy. The cited support guidance does not specify a universal repair sequence for a game that remains locked when nobody appears to be playing it. Avoid treating reinstalling Steam, deleting files, changing passwords, or deauthorizing devices as established fixes for this particular issue.
For a persistent or contradictory status, contact Steam Support’s Family Sharing help route. Include the affected title, the player or status Steam displays, the family context, your operating system and client platform, and the exact error text.

Why older Family Sharing fixes may not apply
Steam says Steam Families replaces both Steam Family Sharing and Family View. Older guides may describe authorization steps or settings that no longer match the current system. Steam Guard device management concerns account authentication and security, not the availability of a game copy. Steam’s family-library guidance attributes this lock to game use or sharing eligibility, so deauthorizing devices is not a documented fix for it. Steam Guard device management
