To get Spirits in Black Myth: Wukong, unlock Spirit absorption in Chapter 1 by speaking with the elder near the Snake Trail Keeper’s Shrine in Bamboo Grove. Then collect remnants from eligible enemies, equip a Spirit in Equipment, and spend Qi to activate its skill. Missed remnants can be recovered at a Keeper’s Shrine.

Unlock Spirit absorption in Chapter 1

  1. Progress to Bamboo Grove and activate the Snake Trail Keeper’s Shrine.
  2. From the shrine, climb the stairs toward the bridge and find the elder nearby.
  3. Speak with him to upgrade the Gourd. This unlocks the ability to absorb Spirit remnants.

If the message “Cannot absorb Spirits without Guidance” appears, you have not completed this interaction yet. The Chapter 1 route and unlock are described in GameSpot’s Spirit guide and Dot Esports’ guide.

Collect eligible Spirit remnants

Not every enemy or boss drops a Spirit. When an eligible enemy leaves a Spirit remnant, interact with it after unlocking absorption to collect it. Spirits are a distinct reward type; they are not the same as Transformation spells.

Recover a Spirit you missed

If you defeated a Spirit-bearing enemy before upgrading the Gourd, or left a remnant behind, visit a Keeper’s Shrine and use its Spirit recovery option. This lets you retrieve missed Spirits rather than replaying the encounter, according to PowerPyx’s location guide.

Equip and activate a Spirit

  1. Open Equipment and assign the Spirit you want to its slot.
  2. Use its passive effect while it is equipped; the passive is separate from its active skill.
  3. Build Qi by hitting enemies, then use the Spirit activation command shown on screen. Activating it spends Qi and briefly transforms the Destined One to perform that Spirit’s signature attack or effect.

Controls vary by platform. PowerPyx lists L2+R2 on PlayStation and LT+RT on Xbox; use the game’s on-screen prompt if your platform or control setup differs. GameSpot’s guide also explains the distinction between a Spirit’s passive and active ability.

Choose and cultivate Spirits

There are 54 Spirits, according to PowerPyx’s guide published August 20, 2024. That count is not the same as the game’s broader population of bosses and elite enemies. For a choice that suits your build, compare the equipped passive, what the active skill does (damage, control, defense, or utility), its Qi demands, and the resources needed to cultivate it. The available guides do not establish one universally best Spirit.

To strengthen a Spirit, visit a Keeper’s Shrine and open the cultivation menu. Upgrades cost Will and materials; the effects and requirements depend on the Spirit and upgrade tier. Baw-Li-Guhh-Lang is an exception that uses Tadpoles. The reference coverage notes that upgrade resources may not be sufficient to fully cultivate every Spirit in one playthrough before New Game+.

Example: Wandering Wight

The Wandering Wight is an early Chapter 1 Spirit opportunity in the Forest of Wolves. Its active skill rams an enemy with a bronze skull. PowerPyx reports its passive as +20 Defense and says cultivation can improve it; treat that number as a guide-reported value, not an official developer statistic. Its defensive benefit may appeal to some builds, but it is not automatically the best choice for every situation. See PowerPyx’s Spirit locations and GameSpot’s guide.
