“There was an error installing Palia” is a generic launcher message, not a diagnosis. Copy the complete text underneath it first: OS error 193, OS error 3, OS error 5, a connection error, a missing executable, and a blank launcher each require a different fix. The quickest high-value step for OS error 193 is deleting UEPrerequisites64.exe from the launcher’s Downloads folder so Palia can download a fresh copy.
Start with these checks
- Close Palia and press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. End remaining Palia or Palia Launcher processes.
- Restart Windows, then right-click the launcher and choose Run as administrator.
- Record the full error text and any filename or drive path it names.
- Confirm that the installation drive is connected, writable and has substantial free space. Palia’s requirements page lists Windows 10/11 64-bit, recommends an SSD/NVMe drive, and shows conflicting storage figures of 22 GB and 40 GB; leave at least the larger stated amount free rather than treating either number as a universal exact requirement. - Use the same source you installed from: standalone launcher, Steam or Epic. Old shortcuts and mixed launcher files can point to different installations.

Fix OS error 193 and UEPrerequisites64.exe
Palia documents this Windows PC workaround for the Unreal prerequisite installer. It may need to be repeated.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
%localappdata%, and press Enter. - Open
PaliaLauncherDownloads. - Delete only
UEPrerequisites64.exe. - Relaunch Palia and let the launcher download a new copy.
- If it still fails, open the game installation’s
Clientfolder and runPaliaClient.exe, then repeat the deletion and relaunch steps.
If the error remains, submit a ticket rather than deleting unrelated files. The workaround is described in Palia’s updated support post: OS error 193 guidance.
Fix OS error 3: missing path or Downloads folder
- Press Windows key + R and enter
%localappdata%PaliaLauncher. - Look for a folder named
Downloads. If it is absent, right-click an empty area, choose New > Folder, and name it exactlyDownloads. - Run the installer again.
If the complete error points to an old D:, E: or O: path, reconnect that drive and check its letter in Disk Management. Restore the original letter if appropriate, or remove the stale installation and install to a valid path. This drive-letter scenario is community-reported, not a universal official procedure. Fix OS error 5 or “Access is denied”
- Open Task Manager and end every Palia and Palia Launcher process.
- Right-click the installer or launcher and select Run as administrator.
- Retry the installation. If it still fails, check whether security software has locked or quarantined a Palia file.
Fix connection and download failures
Messages such as “request or response body error,” “connection reset” and download failures can result from an unstable connection or interrupted transfer.
- Stop streaming, cloud backups, torrents and other game downloads.
- Restart the modem and router.
- Use Ethernet if possible. On Wi-Fi, move closer to the router.
- Try a phone hotspot as a diagnostic test. If it works there but not on home internet, investigate router filtering, DNS, ISP security tools or network restrictions.
- Retry the installer.
Palia’s network guidance is at Troubleshooting Network Connection Issues. A VPN may reveal a routing problem, but it is an optional diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix; it can slow downloads or add instability.
Check antivirus and firewall safely
First inspect antivirus quarantine and history. Restore a file only when you recognize it as part of the official Palia installation. Prefer a narrowly scoped exception for the launcher or Palia directory. If you temporarily disable real-time protection to test, re-enable it immediately afterward. Do not disable Defender permanently, add a whole-drive exclusion, download replacement executables, or use registry “repair” tools. Fix a blank, closing or restarting launcher
For failures before installation starts, uninstall Palia, delete the local Palia folder and old installer, download a fresh installer, and run it as administrator. Then adjust display scaling:
- Right-click
PaliaInstaller.exeand choose Properties > Compatibility. - Select Change high DPI settings.
- Enable the program-DPI option and set high-DPI scaling override to System.
- Apply the settings and start the launcher again.

Steam and Epic Games Store fixes
Steam
- In Steam Library, right-click Palia and choose Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- Restart Steam and launch Palia from the Library, not an old shortcut.
- If verification repeatedly fails, reinstall through Steam.

Epic Games Store
Relaunch Palia from Epic if Epic reports that the executable is missing. Epic may leave Palia listed in Windows after uninstalling, may restart an installation if the launcher is closed midway, and may show an install location that cannot be changed in advanced options. These are documented in Epic Games Store Known Issues. Do not mix standalone, Steam and Epic files or shortcuts.
Perform a clean reinstall
Use this after the specific branches and basic checks fail.

- Delete the Palia folder under
C:Users<YourUsername>AppDataLocal. - Remove leftover Palia folders from other drives where it was installed.
- Back up screenshots, settings, logs and other local files you want to keep before deleting folders.
- Restart Windows.
- Download a fresh installer from Palia’s official download page, run it as administrator, and install to a connected location with ample space; an SSD is preferred.
- Restart once more before testing.
Palia also recommends current Windows updates, graphics drivers, DirectX, both x86 and x64 Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables, and .NET Framework. A clean reinstall can remove local settings or files; it does not mean your online character is stored in that folder.

When to contact Palia Support
After a reproducible failure following a clean reinstall, stop repeating generic fixes and attach the launcher log:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
%localappdata%PaliaLauncherCachepalia-install.log. - Open or save the log and attach it to a Palia Player Support ticket.
- Include the complete error, Windows version, launcher source, installation drive, security software, steps already tried, and screenshots.

Special cases worth checking
- A display stuck at 100% or 100.05% is not automatically a failure; the launcher may still be processing files. Prolonged zero disk and network activity is more concerning.
- An old taskbar pin or desktop shortcut may not patch automatically. Start from the current launcher or store client.
- The generic message alone does not prove that Palia’s servers are down. A 503 can be service-side, but it requires current status confirmation.
- These procedures are for Windows PC. Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, macOS and Linux require platform-specific support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will reinstalling Palia delete my character?
Your character is associated with your online account, but a clean reinstall can remove local screenshots, settings and logs. Back up anything important before deleting folders.

Should I disable Windows Defender permanently?
No. Check quarantine first, use a narrow exception if necessary, and re-enable real-time protection immediately after any diagnostic test.
Can I install Palia on another drive?
Yes, provided the drive is connected, writable and has sufficient space. If the error names a missing old drive letter, correct that path or remove the stale installation before reinstalling.
