Fix the error according to its wording—not by blindly “updating DirectX.” On Windows 11, check the exact dialog and a dxdiag report first, then address the matching cause: a missing legacy component, graphics driver, unsupported GPU feature level, corrupted Windows files, background-software conflict, or VALORANT/Vanguard installation.
Start with the exact error
“VALORANT DirectX Runtime error” is not a single Windows diagnosis. On Windows 11, the message can indicate missing legacy DirectX libraries, a broken or incompatible graphics driver, a GPU that lacks the required Direct3D feature level, corrupted Windows components, or a VALORANT/Vanguard installation problem.

Do not begin by searching for a random “DirectX 12 installer” or downloading individual DLL files. Windows 11 already includes its core DirectX runtime, and the version shown in Windows does not upgrade the physical capabilities of an older GPU. Use the error text to choose the right fix, then work through the steps below in order.

| What the message or symptom says | Start here |
|---|---|
| “The following components are required to run this program: DirectX Runtime” or a named legacy DLL/component | Install Microsoft’s official DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, then check the graphics driver if the error remains. |
| “A D3D11-compatible GPU is required” or “DX11 feature level 10.0 is required” | Check the GPU and feature levels in dxdiag. Hardware below the requirement cannot be fixed by installing a newer DirectX package. |
| The error appeared immediately after a graphics-driver update, or the message mentions a driver crash | Update, roll back, or cleanly reinstall the display driver. |
| Other games and Windows graphics applications also fail | Repair Windows with DISM and SFC, then retest. |
| The game works after a clean boot | Identify a conflicting overlay, antivirus, capture tool, RGB utility, monitoring program, or tuning utility. |
| Nothing changes after the Windows and driver checks | Repair or reinstall VALORANT and Riot Vanguard, then send Riot Support the diagnostic evidence. |
1. Capture the complete message with DxDiag
Before changing drivers or deleting files, take a screenshot or copy the entire error dialog. Small differences matter: “DirectX Runtime,” “D3D11,” “feature level,” and “graphics driver crashed” point to different causes.

- Open Windows Search, type
dxdiag, and launch DxDiag. - On the System tab, note the Windows version and build, processor, memory, and DirectX version.
- Open each Display tab. Record the GPU name, manufacturer, driver date, driver version, and feature levels.
- Choose Save All Information and save the text report somewhere easy to find.
DxDiag is useful both for diagnosis and for a Riot Support case because it packages Windows, display-device, driver, and feature-level information into one report. The DirectX version listed on the System tab is not the same thing as the GPU feature level listed on a Display tab.
2. Check whether the PC meets VALORANT’s Windows 11 requirements
Riot’s currently published PC baseline lists Windows 10 build 19041 or later, or 64-bit Windows 11, 4 GB of RAM, and 1 GB of VRAM. Riot’s minimum GPU examples include Intel HD 4000 and AMD Radeon R5 220, or equivalent hardware. Windows 11 also requires TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot for VALORANT.
These specifications can change, so verify the current requirements on Riot’s VALORANT specifications page before publication or when troubleshooting a newly installed system. Compare the actual GPU shown by DxDiag or Device Manager with Riot’s specification; do not assume that a computer displaying “DirectX 12” is automatically suitable.
DirectX version versus feature level
DirectX is a collection of Windows graphics and multimedia technologies. A feature level describes the capabilities exposed by the GPU and driver, such as the Direct3D features required by a game. A machine may report a newer DirectX version while its graphics hardware still lacks a requested feature level. Installing a newer runtime cannot add missing hardware capabilities.
If DxDiag shows that the GPU does not support the feature level named in the error, software repairs will not make that GPU compatible. The practical choices are using a supported graphics adapter, replacing an unsupported system where possible, or contacting the laptop or PC manufacturer. Do not change BIOS settings merely because VALORANT displays a DirectX-related message.
3. Update, roll back, or reinstall the graphics driver
A corrupted, outdated, incompatible, or incorrectly selected display driver is one of the most likely causes when VALORANT worked previously or the problem began after a driver change.
Check Windows Update first
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install applicable updates.
- Open Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates, if that section is present.
- Restart Windows, even if the installer does not insist on a restart.
For gaming graphics drivers, also check the official support page for the GPU manufacturer or the computer manufacturer. On a laptop, the OEM driver may be preferable because it is tested with that model’s integrated graphics, discrete GPU, power management, and display switching.

- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart and test VALORANT.
A rollback is a diagnostic step, not proof that a particular driver release is defective. Do not claim that a specific version is broken unless Riot, Microsoft, NVIDIA, AMD, Intel, or the relevant OEM has published a current notice for that exact hardware and version.
Cleanly reinstall the driver
If updating or rolling back does not help, reinstall the driver using the GPU manufacturer’s supported installer or a documented cleanup procedure. Select the installer’s clean-install option when it provides one. Avoid unofficial “driver boosters,” registry cleaners, and DLL-download sites.
If the PC has both integrated and discrete graphics, check which adapter VALORANT is using:
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Add VALORANT if it is not listed, then select it and choose Options.
- Test High performance if the system has a discrete GPU, or test the other adapter if the current one is malfunctioning.
You can also check the GPU manufacturer’s control panel. This is a targeted test for dual-GPU systems, not a universal fix.
4. Install the legacy DirectX package only when it fits the error
Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer installs optional legacy side-by-side components used by some older games and applications. These can include D3DX9, D3DX10, D3DX11, XAudio 2.7, XInput 1.3, XACT, and Managed DirectX 1.1 libraries.
Use it when the error names a missing legacy component or when the dialog specifically requests the DirectX runtime. Run the installer from Microsoft, restart if requested, and test VALORANT again.
Important limitations:
- It does not upgrade the core DirectX runtime already installed in Windows 11.
- It does not add a missing GPU feature level.
- It is not the appropriate primary fix for a graphics-driver crash or unsupported hardware.
If the message is only a generic DirectX Runtime error and Windows is up to date, inspect DxDiag and repair the graphics driver before treating the legacy package as the answer. It is an official compatibility component, but its relevance to every modern VALORANT runtime error is not established.

5. Repair Windows system components
Use Windows repair commands when DxDiag, Windows Update, Device Manager, or other games show signs of broader corruption. These commands do not replace the graphics driver and will not make unsupported hardware compatible.

- Open Windows Search, type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run the following command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM can repair the component source that SFC uses. Restart Windows after both commands, then launch VALORANT. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, save the result and include it in a support case rather than repeatedly running the command without investigating the underlying Windows installation.
6. Use a clean boot to find software conflicts
Overlays, hardware-monitoring programs, RGB utilities, third-party antivirus, screen-capture software, and GPU-tuning tools can interfere with games or their anti-cheat components. A clean boot temporarily starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs only.
- Press
Windows + R, typemsconfig, and press Enter. - Open the Services tab.
- Check Hide all Microsoft services.
- Choose Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager.
- Disable enabled startup items, recording what you changed.
- Close Task Manager, select OK in System Configuration, and restart.
- Test VALORANT.
If the error disappears, the clean boot has identified a conflict category, not necessarily a guilty program. Restore normal startup after testing, then re-enable services and startup apps in batches. Test after each batch until the failure returns. The last group re-enabled contains the likely conflict; verify by disabling items in that group one at a time.

7. Repair VALORANT and Riot Vanguard
If the GPU, driver, Windows files, and background software check out, the problem may be in the game or Vanguard installation. Use Riot’s current support workflow for VALORANT installation, launch crashes, Vanguard, Windows logs, and Secure Boot rather than deleting arbitrary folders or DLLs. Riot changes support article URLs and repair workflows, so start at Riot Games Support for VALORANT and follow the current instructions for your symptom.
Before reinstalling, record the error and keep the DxDiag report. If Riot’s current repair option is available, use it first. If a reinstall is necessary, follow Riot’s instructions for removing and reinstalling VALORANT and Vanguard together. Randomly deleting files can leave services or permissions in an inconsistent state and makes the original cause harder to identify.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Check TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot carefully
VALORANT on Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot according to Riot’s published requirements. These are separate from the DirectX runtime. Check their status without changing firmware settings:
- Press
Windows + R, typetpm.msc, and check whether Windows reports that a compatible TPM is ready for use. - Press
Windows + R, typemsinfo32, and inspect BIOS Mode and Secure Boot State.
Do not casually enable TPM, switch from Legacy/CSM boot to UEFI, change storage modes, or alter Secure Boot in firmware. Such changes can affect booting, encryption, and security configuration. If either requirement is missing, use the PC or motherboard manufacturer’s instructions and make sure you understand recovery-key and boot-mode implications before changing anything.

9. What to send Riot Support if the error remains
Escalate after the evidence-based checks rather than sending only “DirectX is broken.” Include:
- The complete error text or a screenshot, including any code.
- The saved
DxDiagreport created with Save All Information. - Windows 11 edition and build.
- GPU model, driver version, and whether the PC uses integrated and discrete graphics.
- When the problem began and whether it followed a Windows, VALORANT, Vanguard, or driver update.
- Whether the failure occurs at launch, while loading a match, or during gameplay.
- Whether other DirectX games or graphics applications work.
- The results of DISM, SFC, driver rollback/reinstall, clean-boot testing, and any VALORANT/Vanguard repair.
This information helps distinguish an application launch failure from a driver crash, unsupported feature level, Windows corruption, hardware problem, or Vanguard issue.
Do not use these “fixes”
- Do not promise that installing DirectX 12 will solve the issue. Windows 11 receives the core DirectX runtime through Windows Update.
- Do not claim that Microsoft’s legacy package upgrades DirectX 12. It adds optional legacy libraries and does not modify the installed core runtime.
- Do not download replacement DLLs from random websites or copy them into System32, the VALORANT folder, or other game directories.
- Do not use registry cleaners or unofficial “DirectX repair” utilities.
- Do not label a particular graphics-driver version defective without an authoritative, hardware-specific notice.
- Do not change BIOS, TPM, Secure Boot, or boot-mode settings casually.
Recommended order in one checklist
- Capture the exact error and save a DxDiag report.
- Compare the GPU, feature levels, Windows build, RAM, and VRAM with Riot’s current requirements.
- Update, roll back, or cleanly reinstall the official graphics driver.
- Install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX package only if the message points to a missing legacy component.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth, thensfc /scannow. - Use a clean boot to isolate overlays and other background conflicts.
- Repair or reinstall VALORANT and Vanguard using Riot’s current workflow.
- Submit the error, DxDiag, system details, and test results to Riot Support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will installing DirectX 12 fix VALORANT on Windows 11?
No. Windows 11 already includes the core DirectX runtime, and Windows Update maintains it. Installing a newer DirectX version cannot add hardware feature levels that the GPU does not support.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do I check whether my GPU supports VALORANT’s Direct3D requirements?
Use DxDiag. Open Windows Search, run dxdiag, select a Display tab, and inspect the GPU, driver information, and feature levels. Compare the hardware with Riot’s current VALORANT specifications.
Should I install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer?
Only when the error names a missing legacy DirectX component or DLL. Microsoft’s End-User Runtime Web Installer adds optional older libraries; it does not upgrade Windows 11’s core DirectX runtime or repair unsupported hardware.
What should I do if VALORANT crashes after a GPU driver update?
A driver update, rollback, or clean reinstall is usually more appropriate when the error began after a graphics-driver change or mentions a driver crash. Use the official GPU or PC manufacturer package.
Can overlays or antivirus cause a VALORANT DirectX error?
A clean boot can show whether a non-Microsoft service or startup application is interfering. Re-enable disabled items in batches afterward to identify the conflict, then restore normal startup.
The Bottom Line
The correct fix depends on the message: install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX package only for a missing legacy component; repair or roll back the graphics driver for driver-related failures; verify the GPU feature level for D3D11 errors; and use DISM, SFC, clean-boot testing, or Riot’s repair workflow when the evidence points beyond DirectX itself.
