The file belongs to Riot Vanguard, but its name on a blue screen does not prove that Vanguard alone caused the failure. A conflicting kernel driver, unstable BIOS or CPU settings, corrupted Windows files, faulty memory or storage, and an incomplete Vanguard installation can produce the same symptom.

What the vgk.sys blue screen means
vgk.sys is a kernel-level driver used by Riot Vanguard, the anti-cheat system that works with the Vanguard client. Because the driver operates in the Windows kernel, a failure can trigger a full system stop rather than merely closing VALORANT.

Common stop codes shown alongside vgk.sys include:
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL(0xD1)KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED(0x1E)PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREASYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
These codes describe different classes of kernel failure. For example, DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL generally indicates that kernel-mode code accessed invalid or pageable memory at an interrupt level where that access was not permitted. The visible filename is therefore a diagnostic lead, not a final verdict.
1. Record exactly when and how Windows crashes
Before uninstalling drivers, cleaning files, or repeatedly reinstalling Vanguard, write down:
- the complete stop code and any hexadecimal code;
- whether the crash occurs during startup, Windows sign-in, Riot Client launch, VALORANT launch, gameplay, or game exit;
- any other driver or module named on the blue screen;
- your CPU, motherboard model, BIOS/UEFI version, Windows version, and graphics driver version;
- what changed immediately before the problem began.
Recent changes worth noting include a BIOS update, memory or CPU tuning, a graphics or network-driver update, RGB or hardware-monitoring software, virtualization software, an antivirus change, or a newly installed motherboard utility.
If Windows created a minidump or memory dump, preserve it. Do not delete dump files with a cleanup tool while you are still investigating. A dump can show whether the same module and call stack recur across multiple crashes.
2. Update Windows and official hardware drivers
Install pending Windows updates first:
- Open Settings.
- Choose Windows Update (or Update & Security > Windows Update on some Windows 10 builds).
- Select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart.
Then obtain drivers from the computer or component manufacturer’s official support page. Prioritize:

- Full Anti-Ghosting, Wide System Compatibility - 104 keys register accurately during rapid combos, and plug-and-play wired connection works across Windows and Mac with no drivers required.
- Pro Software for Even Deeper Customization - Want to go beyond the onboard presets? The companion software lets you design custom RGB effects and program macros with your own keybindings.
- motherboard BIOS or UEFI firmware;
- chipset and Intel platform drivers;
- graphics driver;
- network adapter driver;
- storage-controller or NVMe driver, when supplied by the manufacturer.
Do not use unofficial driver-download sites or generic automatic driver-updater utilities during diagnosis. They can install an unverified version and make it difficult to determine which change caused the crash. If the blue screens began immediately after a driver update, rolling back that specific driver can be more useful than installing several unrelated updates.
3. Check the Intel 13th- and 14th-generation CPU branch
Riot has a dedicated troubleshooting path for vgk.sys crashes involving Intel 13th- and 14th-generation processors. If you use one of these CPUs, treat firmware and processor stability as a priority—especially if the system has been running a motherboard “enhanced,” “unlimited,” or overclocked performance profile.
Use the motherboard manufacturer’s instructions to:
- Update the BIOS/UEFI to a version that addresses the relevant processor-stability issues.
- Load the manufacturer’s or Intel’s baseline processor settings.
- Temporarily remove manual overclocks, undervolts, aggressive memory profiles, and automatic motherboard enhancement modes.
- Test VALORANT again before making additional changes.
Riot’s localized guidance refers to processor power limits such as a 125 W long-duration or processor-base limit and, for some Core i9-13900 and i9-14900 processors, a 253 W short-duration limit. Do not copy those numbers blindly into every motherboard BIOS. Labels, defaults, cooling capacity, CPU model, and vendor profiles differ. Follow the current Riot and motherboard-manufacturer guidance for your exact system, record every setting you change, and make sure you know how to restore the previous configuration.
If the computer is unstable outside VALORANT—during other games, stress tests, idle operation, or boot—Vanguard may simply be the first workload that exposes an underlying platform problem.

4. Remove recent kernel-level conflicts
Temporarily roll back or uninstall a recently added low-level component if the timing matches the first crash. Potential conflicts include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- hardware-monitoring, fan-control, or overclocking utilities;
- RGB and motherboard-control software;
- virtualization or virtual-machine components;
- third-party antivirus or other file-system filter drivers;
- graphics, network, storage, or audio drivers;
- recently added peripherals and their drivers.
Use the application’s normal uninstaller or Windows’ Settings > Apps > Installed apps page. Do not begin by changing permissions on vgk.sys, deleting random registry entries, or removing arbitrary services. Those actions can damage the installation and destroy evidence without addressing the underlying conflict.
If you need to isolate a service conflict, perform a temporary clean boot, test the system, and then restore normal startup and security protection. Do not leave antivirus or other security software permanently disabled as a supposed fix.
5. Reinstall Riot Vanguard using Riot’s supported route
A failed or incomplete Vanguard installation can prevent its driver from launching correctly. Riot describes the driver and client as cooperating components and indicates that a failed driver launch may require Vanguard to update or be deliberately reinstalled.
Use the supported Windows uninstall path:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features on some Windows 10 versions).
- Find Riot Vanguard.
- Choose Uninstall and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows when instructed.
- Launch Riot Client or VALORANT and allow Vanguard to be installed again.
- Restart again if Riot requests it, then test the game.
If Vanguard is also used by another Riot game on the computer, check the effect of removing it before proceeding. Do not use a third-party Vanguard-removal utility or delete locked driver files as your first approach. If a supported reinstall does not change the blue screen, stop repeating the same reinstall and return to driver, firmware, memory, and dump analysis.

6. Use Safe Mode when Windows cannot boot normally
If the system crashes before the desktop is usable, enter Windows Recovery Environment:
- From Windows, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. On Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup.
- If Windows will not stay running, interrupt startup several times to trigger automatic recovery, or use Windows recovery media.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Select Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking.
From Safe Mode, remove or roll back the most likely recent driver or service and restore a known-good BIOS configuration. If the crash stops in Safe Mode, that supports a driver or service conflict; it does not by itself prove that Vanguard is defective.
Back up important files before making major recovery changes. A complete Windows reinstall should be a last resort, not the first response to a blue screen naming vgk.sys.
What the stop code can tell you
| Stop code | Useful interpretation | First checks |
|---|---|---|
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (0xD1) |
A kernel driver accessed invalid or pageable memory at an inappropriate interrupt level. | Inspect the dump, update or roll back the implicated driver, and review recent firmware or driver changes. |
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (0x1E) |
A kernel-mode exception was not handled. A named driver or recently added service may be involved. | Disable or remove the identified recent driver or service; use Safe Mode if startup is affected. |
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA |
Kernel code referenced memory that should have been resident but could not be accessed correctly. | Check memory stability, BIOS settings, other kernel drivers, and the dump before replacing hardware. |
SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED |
A system thread generated an exception that was not handled. | Treat the named module as a lead, then examine the exception details and stack. |
None of these codes, by themselves, proves that Vanguard is the sole cause. Memory corruption can cause a dump to blame the wrong module.
Analyze a crash dump with WinDbg
When the basic fixes do not resolve the problem, Microsoft’s WinDbg debugger can provide more useful evidence than the filename on the blue screen.

- Optional Software for Power Users - Everyday use needs zero software, but for advanced RGB effects and deeper macro profiles, companion software is available whenever you want to go further.
- Install WinDbg through Microsoft’s official distribution channel.
- Open the relevant minidump or memory dump.
- Run
!analyze -vin the debugger command window. - Record
BUGCHECK_CODE, bug-check parameters,MODULE_NAME,IMAGE_NAME,FAULTING_IP,STACK_TEXT, and anyBUGCHECKING_DRIVERfield. - Compare multiple dumps. A module that appears consistently with a similar stack is more significant than one name appearing in a single corrupted dump.
- Compare the crash time with Event Viewer and with driver, BIOS, Windows, and software changes.
In Event Viewer, review Windows Logs > System around the crash time. Look for repeated driver, service, disk, or hardware events, but do not treat every warning as the cause. A stack trace and image name can identify the involved component, yet corrupted memory can make any individual dump inconclusive.
When hardware testing is justified
Test hardware when crashes continue after returning the BIOS to stable baseline settings, updating official drivers, removing recent conflicts, and reinstalling Vanguard. Priorities include:
- memory stability and the installed memory profile;
- CPU stability and temperatures;
- motherboard firmware and processor power behavior;
- storage health and Windows system integrity;
- vendor-provided hardware diagnostics.
A PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA crash is a reason to test memory and inspect other drivers—not a reason to immediately buy new RAM. Likewise, do not replace the CPU, motherboard, storage, or Windows installation media solely because a crash mentions vgk.sys. Replacement becomes reasonable only when repeatable testing or a manufacturer diagnosis supports it.

- Do not force permissions changes on
vgk.sys. - Do not delete random Vanguard services, registry keys, or driver files.
- Do not use registry cleaners, “optimizers,” or unofficial driver updaters as a universal fix.
- Do not apply a random BIOS overclock, undervolt, or power limit copied from another motherboard.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus or Windows security features without a controlled isolation test.
- Do not repeatedly reinstall Vanguard while ignoring a recurring dump, unstable BIOS, or memory error.
When to contact Riot or the hardware manufacturer
Contact Riot Support if the supported Vanguard reinstall and the relevant Riot processor-specific steps do not resolve the problem. Contact the computer or motherboard manufacturer for BIOS behavior, processor-baseline settings, warranty questions, or hardware diagnostics.
Include useful evidence instead of only reporting “Vanguard causes a BSOD”:
- the complete stop code and parameters;
- WinDbg output from
!analyze -v, when available; - CPU and motherboard model;
- BIOS/UEFI and Windows versions;
- graphics, chipset, network, and storage driver versions;
- recent hardware, firmware, or software changes;
- the exact point at which the crash occurs;
- whether the crash also happens outside VALORANT or Riot Client.
Quick decision checklist
- One crash after a driver or BIOS change: roll back that change and preserve the dump.
- Crash on an Intel 13th- or 14th-generation system: update firmware and return processor settings to the manufacturer’s baseline.
- Crash only when Vanguard starts: use Riot’s supported Vanguard reinstall process, then investigate conflicting kernel software if it returns.
- Crash during boot: use Safe Mode or Windows Recovery to isolate the driver or service.
- Crashes in several games or at idle: prioritize firmware, memory, CPU stability, storage, and vendor diagnostics.
- Repeated crashes with inconclusive dumps: collect multiple dumps and escalate with system specifications and timestamps.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. vgk.sys is Vanguard’s kernel driver, but Windows may name the component that was running when memory was corrupted by another driver, unstable firmware or CPU settings, faulty memory, storage problems, or a software conflict.
Does vgk.sys always mean Riot Vanguard is broken?
No. Use Riot Vanguard’s supported uninstall and reinstall process. Manually deleting driver files, registry entries, or services can damage the installation and remove evidence needed to diagnose the crash.
Should I delete vgk.sys manually?
Riot maintains a specific vgk.sys troubleshooting path for these processors. Firmware and motherboard performance profiles can affect stability, so affected systems should be updated and returned to the manufacturer’s baseline settings before additional tuning.
Why are Intel 13th- and 14th-generation CPUs mentioned?
Not necessarily. Vanguard is a separate component, and a corrupted Vanguard installation may need its own supported reinstall. If that does not help, investigate drivers, firmware, memory, CPU stability, and crash dumps instead of repeating the game installation.
Will reinstalling VALORANT fix the blue screen?
Only after memory, firmware, processor stability, storage, and vendor diagnostics provide evidence of a hardware fault. A blue screen that mentions vgk.sys alone is not sufficient justification for a replacement.
When should I replace my RAM, CPU, or motherboard?
The Bottom Line
vgk.sys is a clue, not a diagnosis. Begin with the exact stop code and dump evidence, update official Windows and hardware software, return BIOS and CPU settings to a stable baseline, then reinstall Vanguard through Riot’s supported process. If crashes continue outside VALORANT or across multiple tests, investigate platform stability and hardware rather than assuming that replacing Vanguard—or buying new hardware—will solve the problem.
