The safe fix is to stop loading or executing wc-cart-fragments on routes that do not need a live legacy mini-cart, while keeping cart, checkout, account, session, and cookie behavior dynamic. First identify which theme, plugin, widget, or dependency enqueues the script. Then remove accidental global loading, use the Mini Cart Block where your theme supports it, or apply WooCommerce’s documented filter to prevent execution on unrelated pages. Test every add-to-cart and cart-update path on staging before changing production.

Cart fragments use WordPress AJAX to refresh mini-cart HTML and cart state. On a busy store, requests to admin-ajax.php can add PHP and database work to pages that have no reason to display a changing cart. WooCommerce changed the default behavior in version 7.8, but older themes, hard-coded widgets, and custom dependencies can still recreate the problem.

WooCommerce’s legacy Cart Widget depends on a frontend script named wc-cart-fragments. The script asks the server for refreshed mini-cart markup through the WordPress admin-AJAX API, then replaces the widget’s HTML and cart indicators without a full page reload. The request can be initiated after cart events such as wc_fragment_refresh and updated_wc_div, when a browser restores a page from history, during Customizer handling, and after a timeout intended to prevent stale cart data.
The WooCommerce code reference shows that the script receives an AJAX URL, a cart-hash key, a fragment name, and a 5000 ms request timeout. A request may appear in DevTools as admin-ajax.php with an action such as get_refreshed_fragments; some implementations use a WooCommerce AJAX endpoint instead.

The performance issue is not that every AJAX call is inherently bad. It is that a live mini-cart can be refreshed on article, landing, or other non-commerce routes where no cart interaction is possible. Each unnecessary request consumes application workers and may query sessions, products, totals, or extensions. The impact varies with traffic, hosting, theme code, plugins, cache configuration, and whether requests are serialized behind slow PHP workers. Official WooCommerce sources do not provide a universal number of milliseconds saved, server-cost reduction, or conversion lift, so measure your own store.
Why WooCommerce 7.8 did not eliminate every case
Before WooCommerce 7.8, cart fragments were globally enqueued on WooCommerce store routes even when a page did not render a mini-cart. In 7.8, WooCommerce changed the default. The developer blog states: “Beginning with WooCommerce 7.8, we implemented a change that disables the cart fragments script from being enqueued on all page routes of a WooCommerce store by default.”
Since 7.8, the script is normally loaded when the legacy Cart Widget is rendered, when another script declares wc-cart-fragments as a dependency, or when custom code explicitly enqueues it. A theme can still hard-code the widget in a header or footer, and a plugin can still declare the dependency globally. Therefore, upgrading WooCommerce does not prove that your site is free of global fragment requests.

Diagnose before changing anything
Use a staging copy whenever possible. The goal is to identify the exact enqueue source and to establish which pages genuinely require live cart updates.
- Capture the request. Open browser DevTools, select the Network panel, enable recording, and reproduce the slow page load in a fresh session. Filter for
wc-cart-fragments,get_refreshed_fragments,admin-ajax.php, andwc-ajax. Record the request URL, initiator, status, duration, and response size. A request that appears after the page has rendered can still consume server capacity. - Find the visible cart UI. Inspect the rendered header, sidebar, footer, and off-canvas menu for a legacy Cart Widget or a theme-built mini-cart. In the Elements panel, look for widget markup and data attributes associated with the cart. Also check whether a page builder inserted the widget outside the normal sidebar.
- Trace dependencies. Inspect the initiator stack in DevTools, then search the active theme and plugins for
wp_enqueue_script( 'wc-cart-fragments' )and for script registrations that listwc-cart-fragmentsas a dependency. A plugin may enqueue another handle whose dependency pulls fragments in indirectly. - Compare routes. Test an article or landing page, a product page, the shop, Cart, Checkout, and My Account. Note whether the request appears on pages with no mini-cart, whether it fires once or repeatedly, and whether removing the widget or dependency makes it disappear. Keep a record of cart count and mini-cart behavior on every route.
- Test interactions on staging. Add a product from a product page and an archive, change quantity, remove an item, restore a browser-history page, and complete checkout with both logged-in and guest sessions. Include any quick-view, wishlist, subscription, bundle, or custom add-to-cart flow used by your store.
Choose the least disruptive fix
There is no single switch that is correct for every store. Use the following decision points before editing code.

Fix 1: remove an accidental global enqueue
Start with the enqueue source found in your diagnostic work. Update the theme or plugin so it registers or enqueues wc-cart-fragments only where a legacy mini-cart or equivalent fragment listener exists. Removing the handle from a page is appropriate only when that page does not need live cart updates.

Do not blindly deregister the script from every route. Custom mini-carts, quick-buy interfaces, and extensions may listen for fragment events or rely on the returned markup. WooCommerce documents manual enqueueing for stores that provide equivalent functionality, so a custom implementation should declare its requirement deliberately rather than depending on an accidental global load.
What to verify after removing the enqueue
- The Network panel no longer shows a fragment request on pages without a live cart UI.
- The cart count updates after add-to-cart without a hard refresh where your design promises that behavior.
- Remove-item and quantity controls update totals and notices correctly.
- Cart and Checkout still load their required scripts and session data.
- No JavaScript error appears when a customer returns with the browser Back button.
Fix 2: replace the legacy widget with the Mini Cart Block
WooCommerce’s 7.8 release notes recommend the Mini Cart Block as an alternative to the legacy widget. The block is not an automatic drop-in for every theme: confirm that the active theme supports the block editor and that payment, product, localization, accessibility, and page-builder extensions continue to work with its markup.
Migration procedure
- Duplicate the production site into staging and record the current widget’s location, styling, open/close behavior, cart count, and empty-cart message.
- In the site editor or block-enabled template area, replace the legacy Cart Widget with the Mini Cart Block in the same header, sidebar, or drawer location.
- Recreate visible options such as product thumbnails, subtotal, buttons, and display rules using the block’s available settings. Do not assume legacy widget CSS selectors still apply.
- Test desktop and mobile layouts, guest and logged-in sessions, coupons, taxes, shipping estimates, and any extension that adds cart-item data.
- Compare Network requests on non-commerce pages. Confirm that the old widget and its fragment dependency are not still present elsewhere in the template.
If an extension still requires the legacy widget or fragment events, keep the old implementation on the routes that need it and use scoped execution elsewhere instead of forcing an incomplete migration.

Fix 3: prevent execution on unrelated routes with the official filter
WooCommerce documents the woocommerce_get_script_data filter as a way to keep the script available while returning no data on routes that do not need it. With no script data, the fragment code does not execute there. The documented example permits normal data on WooCommerce, Cart, and Checkout pages and returns null elsewhere:

}, 10, 2 );Place this in a controlled site-specific plugin or the child theme rather than editing a parent theme that will be overwritten. The condition is an example, not a universal rule. Add every custom route that contains a live cart indicator, AJAX add-to-cart component, or code listening for fragment events. Conversely, do not assume that a product page is safe to disable: a product template may show a changing mini-cart even though it is not classified by your condition as a standard WooCommerce page.
Common filter mistakes
- Using only
is_woocommerce(). Cart and Checkout need explicit checks because they are separate conditional functions. - Ignoring custom landing pages. A campaign page with an add-to-cart button and header cart must be included in the allow-list.
- Applying the filter before WooCommerce is available. Put the code in a plugin or theme that loads after WordPress hooks are initialized; test for fatal errors on a clean request.
- Assuming no request means no cart update is needed. Confirm the UI behavior, not just the Network panel.
Fix 4: make caching safe for carts and sessions
JavaScript changes cannot correct a cache that serves the wrong cart state. Keep Cart, Checkout, and My Account pages dynamic. Review page-cache and CDN rules so WooCommerce session data and cart-related cookies are not stored and replayed as shared HTML.

A cache that gives one shopper another shopper’s cart, prices, notices, or account content is a correctness and privacy failure. Configure exclusions for the cookies and session identifiers used by your WooCommerce installation, and ensure that cart fragments or equivalent cart endpoints are not cached as public responses. Cache the product, category, and editorial pages that are genuinely public, while allowing personalized cart requests to reach the application.
Cache validation checklist
- Open a private window, add a distinct product, and verify that a second session does not see the first session’s cart.
- Check that logged-in account pages never arrive from a public page cache.
- Confirm that Cart and Checkout totals change after shipping, tax, coupon, and quantity updates.
- Purge existing cache after rule changes, then repeat tests from separate devices or sessions.
- Inspect response headers to verify which requests are served from cache and which are deliberately dynamic.
How to measure whether the fix helped
Measure before and after on the same staging data and representative routes. Record the number of fragment requests, their duration, response status, and server timing. Also inspect PHP worker utilization, database load, and cache-hit behavior during a realistic test window. A reduction in browser requests is useful only if cart interactions remain correct and the server is not simply doing the same work through another endpoint.

Compare cold and warm cache loads, mobile and desktop layouts, guest and logged-in sessions, and a browser-history restore. Do not publish a universal savings claim; WooCommerce’s official material supplies no general benchmark.

Production rollout checklist
- Back up files and the database, and deploy the change through a staging-to-production workflow.
- Clear page, object, CDN, and browser caches after deployment.
- Verify that unrelated pages no longer execute cart fragments.
- Verify add-to-cart from product, archive, quick-view, and custom campaign interfaces.
- Verify cart count, mini-cart contents, remove-item, quantity changes, coupons, shipping, tax, and checkout completion.
- Test guest, logged-in, mobile, desktop, and browser Back-button scenarios.
- Monitor server logs and AJAX error rates after release. Roll back if cart correctness, checkout, or account behavior regresses.
Bottom line for store owners
Begin by finding who loads wc-cart-fragments; do not start by deleting a core script globally. Remove an accidental enqueue where no live cart UI exists, adopt the Mini Cart Block when your theme and extensions are compatible, or use the documented filter to stop execution on unrelated routes. Keep every route with cart behavior in scope, and treat Cart, Checkout, My Account, sessions, and cart cookies as dynamic. The right result is fewer unnecessary fragment requests without sacrificing a correct, private cart for any shopper.
