Start with a full restart from the Xbox Guide. If the console reaches the dashboard afterward, check for a system update. If it returns to the startup troubleshooter, note the complete error code and follow Xbox’s current instructions for that specific code. The available support guidance does not establish one cause or a guaranteed fix for the exact “Took Too Long to Start” message.
1. Restart from the Guide
If the Xbox interface is responsive, use the console’s Restart Console command rather than repeatedly turning it off and on:
- Press the Xbox button to open the Guide.
- Open the System tab.
- Select Restart Console, then confirm.
Xbox Wire explains that clearing the Alternate MAC Address setting was sometimes thought to fix a problem because the action prompted a full reboot—not because clearing that setting was itself a general startup repair. Don’t change network settings as a substitute for restarting. Xbox Wire’s interview with an Xbox Supportability PM discusses that specific scenario.
2. Install an update if you can reach Settings
Once the dashboard is available, connect the console to the internet if needed, then open Settings > System > Updates & downloads > Update console. Follow the on-screen prompts. These are Microsoft’s published Xbox One update steps: Xbox One system update guidance.

3. Try a full power cycle if the restart did not help
A power cycle is a low-risk step to try when the interface still responds but the startup problem persists. The publisher support instructions cited here say this procedure does not delete saved game data or progress, but it resets brightness and language settings.
- Hold the console’s power button until it shuts down completely.
- Unplug the power brick from the console and the outlet.
- Wait at least 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the power brick and start the console.
Rockstar Games Support’s Xbox One cache-clearing instructions describe these steps. This is a general power-cycle suggestion, not a fix proven specifically for the “Took Too Long to Start” message.

4. If you see the startup troubleshooter, record the whole code
If the console switches to a “Something went wrong” or startup troubleshooting screen, write down the complete error code exactly as displayed before choosing another option. An error code changes the troubleshooting question: use Xbox’s current guidance for that code rather than assuming the original message explains the cause.
Xbox’s support index covers startup and system-update problems: Xbox startup and system-update error support. A Microsoft Q&A post describes one console that returned to troubleshooting and showed E102/E101 after update attempts; that individual case does not show that those codes apply to every console displaying “Took Too Long to Start.”

When an offline update may be relevant
An offline system update may be an option for some system-update failures, but the exact steps and requirements depend on Xbox’s current instructions and the displayed error. Consult Microsoft’s current guidance for your console and code before preparing a USB drive; the information available here does not establish USB specifications or a model-specific procedure.
