The message is WordPress’s generic fatal-error screen: some PHP code stopped running, but the screen does not identify why. Start with the recovery email, then use a debug or server log to identify the file that failed. Isolate the named plugin or theme, check PHP and update problems, and only then investigate permissions or memory. Restore normal settings and contact your host if the logs point to the server.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
What the WordPress critical-error message means
“There has been a critical error on this website” appears when WordPress encounters a fatal PHP error. WordPress hides the detailed message from ordinary visitors, so the notice is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. A plugin, theme, custom code, an interrupted update, an incompatible PHP version, or a server-side configuration can all trigger it.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe fastest fix is not to reinstall WordPress at random. Find the file and line named in a log, then correct, update, disable, or replace that component. Work through the checks below in order; each one either restores access or narrows the cause for the next step.
Before changing files
- Record when the failure began and what changed immediately beforehand: a plugin update, theme edit, PHP switch, migration, or new code.
- Take a database and file backup if your host provides a backup tool. If the site is reachable in any way, avoid making several unrelated changes at once.
- Use SFTP, your host’s file manager, or a hosting control panel. You need access to the WordPress installation even if
/wp-adminwill not load. - Do not display PHP errors to visitors on a live site. Error output can reveal file paths, credentials, and other sensitive details; log errors instead.
1. Check the recovery email first
WordPress may send the site administrator an email after a fatal error. Check the administrator inbox and its spam or junk folder. The message can identify the plugin or theme that failed and may include a Recovery Mode link.

Recovery Mode can pause the component that caused the failure for your administrator session, allowing you to sign in and deactivate, update, or replace it while normal visitors remain protected. Treat the link as a diagnostic path, not proof that the component is permanently bad: an incompatible PHP version or a partial update can produce the same symptom.
- Open the newest WordPress recovery email and verify that it refers to the affected site.
- Use its sign-in link in a private browser window if possible.
- In the dashboard, note the component named in the error details, then deactivate or update it.
- Test the front end and administration area in a separate window after each change.
If no message arrives, the administrator address may be wrong, mail delivery may be blocked, or the fatal error may occur before WordPress can send mail. Continue with logging.
2. Enable a safe WordPress debug log
When the dashboard is unavailable, edit wp-config.php in the WordPress root. Place these definitions before the line that says WordPress should stop editing:
define( 'WP_DEBUG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_LOG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false );
WP_DEBUG_LOG records errors only when WP_DEBUG is also true. Keeping WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY false prevents the details from appearing on public pages while still writing them to wp-content/debug.log.
- Download a copy of
wp-config.phpbefore editing it. - Look for existing
WP_DEBUG,WP_DEBUG_LOG, orWP_DEBUG_DISPLAYlines. Change the existing values instead of creating conflicting duplicate definitions. - Save the file and load the failing page once to generate a fresh entry.
- Open
wp-content/debug.logand read the newest fatal-error block. - Copy the complete file path, line number, error type, and the first few lines of the stack trace. Those details determine whether to isolate a plugin, theme, or custom code.
Typical clues include a path containing wp-content/plugins/, a path containing wp-content/themes/, or a memory-exhaustion message. A path under a host’s PHP or web-server directories points toward the environment rather than a WordPress extension.

Do not paste a public debug log into a forum without removing usernames, absolute server paths, database names, and other private data. After the incident is resolved, return WP_DEBUG to false and remove or archive the log according to your host’s policy.
3. Read the server error log when WordPress is locked out
If no debug log is created, or even the login page fails, open the hosting control panel’s server logs. Depending on the host, the relevant screen may be called Errors, Error Log, or Logs; cPanel commonly exposes an Errors view.
Reload the broken URL, then inspect entries written at that exact time. Server logs often include the PHP fatal error, the full file path, and a line number even when WordPress cannot initialize. Match the path to one of these locations:
| Log clue | Likely area | Next action |
|---|---|---|
wp-content/plugins/plugin-folder/... |
Plugin code | Rename that plugin folder and test the site. |
wp-content/themes/theme-folder/... |
Active theme or its custom code | Rename the theme folder and let WordPress use a default theme. |
| A custom file outside plugins and themes | Mu-plugin, custom integration, or edited core file | Review the named file and restore the last known-good copy. |
| PHP binary, extension, or server path | PHP version, extension, limits, or host configuration | Ask the host to check the runtime and its logs. |
Do not infer the cause from the first warning line alone. Fatal errors can be preceded by harmless notices. Focus on the fatal exception and the file that generated it.
4. Isolate a failing plugin
Use the log’s file path whenever possible. If it names a plugin, disable only that plugin first; this preserves the rest of the site and makes rollback easier.

When you know the plugin
- Open
wp-content/plugins/with SFTP or the file manager. - Rename the named plugin directory, for example from
example-plugintoexample-plugin.disabled. Renaming changes its path without deleting its files. - Reload the front end and
/wp-admin. If both load, the renamed plugin is the immediate trigger or is incompatible with the current environment. - Leave it disabled while you check for a compatible release, contact its developer, or restore a known-good version.
- Rename the directory back only when you are ready to test activation again.
When you do not know the plugin
- Rename
wp-content/pluginsto a temporary name such asplugins.hold. This disables all standard plugins at once. - Reload the site. If it recovers, create a new empty
pluginsdirectory if WordPress has not done so, then move the plugin directories back one at a time. - Reactivate each plugin from the dashboard, testing the front end after every activation. The plugin that brings the fatal error back is the one to investigate.
- Restore the original directory name and keep the offending plugin inactive while you update, replace, or roll it back.
Do not delete a plugin directory during diagnosis: some plugins store settings or uploaded assets there, and deletion removes your easiest rollback. If the error remains with every standard plugin disabled, return the folders to their original names and test the theme and environment instead.
5. Test the active theme
A theme can fail because of a syntax mistake, a removed PHP function, an incompatible update, or custom code in its files. The log path should decide whether this is your next branch.
Temporarily rename the theme folder
- Open
wp-content/themes/. - Rename the active theme directory, for example from
my-themetomy-theme.disabled. - Reload the site. WordPress should fall back to an installed default theme. The exact default depends on which themes are present; Twenty Twenty-Three is one example used in WordPress guidance.
- If the site loads, sign in and switch properly to an installed default theme under Appearance → Themes. Do not leave a theme active only because its folder name was changed.
If no default theme is installed, upload a compatible WordPress default theme before renaming the active one. A fallback theme changes the site’s appearance and may not support custom templates, but it is useful for proving whether the original theme caused the fatal error.
What to do after the test
- If the default theme works, update or reinstall the original theme from a trusted package and review any custom child-theme or
functions.phpedits. - If the error persists with plugins disabled and a default theme active, the cause is more likely PHP, memory, permissions, core files, or another server-level component.
- Restore the original folder name only after you have decided whether to keep it inactive, repair it, or replace it.
6. Check PHP, updates, and configuration
Outdated PHP, a plugin or theme that does not support the current PHP release, faulty configuration, and incomplete updates are common environmental causes. Use the fatal-error path and the time line of the incident to choose the check rather than changing everything simultaneously.

PHP version and extensions
In your hosting panel, note the PHP version assigned to the affected domain and compare it with the stated requirements of your WordPress version, theme, and plugins. A host can confirm whether required PHP extensions are enabled and whether the runtime changed recently. Do not switch PHP versions blindly on a production site; make a backup and test the change in a staging copy when your host provides one.

Interrupted or incomplete updates
If the error appeared during an update, the package may be incomplete. Once access is restored, update the affected extension from its normal WordPress screen or reinstall a clean copy. Do not overwrite a customized theme without preserving the child theme and any local changes. If core files were interrupted, use the host’s recovery or WordPress’s built-in update process rather than deleting the entire installation.
Configuration and custom code
Review recent edits to wp-config.php, a child theme, a snippets plugin, or a must-use plugin. A missing semicolon, an unmatched brace, or code written for an older PHP release can produce a fatal parse or “undefined function” error. The log’s line number is the starting point; compare that file with a known-good backup before editing.
7. Investigate permissions and memory only when the log supports it
File and directory permissions
One troubleshooting guide suggests a common baseline of 644 for files and 755 for directories. Treat those values as a starting point, not a universal rule: hosts may use different owners, groups, ACLs, or stricter settings. Incorrect ownership can be just as important as the numeric mode. Ask the host to verify the account that runs PHP can read WordPress files and write only to intended upload or cache directories.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not recursively apply permissions from an untrusted script or make every file writable. Excessive write access creates a security problem and can mask the real cause.
PHP memory exhaustion
If the log explicitly says that the allowed memory size was exhausted, increase the PHP memory limit through the host’s supported control panel or configuration method. Some sites also set a WordPress limit in wp-config.php, but the effective value is controlled by the PHP runtime and host policy. Raising a limit will not repair a plugin that consumes memory in a loop; it can merely postpone the crash. Check the offending request, plugin, import, or image operation after the limit is adjusted.

8. A recovery decision table
| Situation | Best first move | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You received a recovery email naming a component | Use Recovery Mode, then deactivate or update that component | It is the quickest path to an administrator session and a specific suspect. |
| The dashboard works but the front end fails | Enable the debug log with display disabled | The log can identify the file and line without exposing details publicly. |
| Neither the dashboard nor login page loads | Read the host’s server error log | The server can record a PHP fatal before WordPress starts. |
| The log names a plugin | Rename that plugin folder | It isolates one component without deleting its data. |
| The log names the active theme | Rename the theme folder and use an installed default | A fallback theme tests whether templates or theme code are failing. |
| Every plugin and the theme are ruled out | Check PHP, extensions, interrupted updates, permissions, and memory | The remaining causes are environmental or outside standard extensions. |
9. If the site still will not load
- Confirm that the renamed plugin and theme folders are recorded so you can restore them deliberately.
- Check the newest server and WordPress log entries again after one clean reload; timestamps help separate the current fault from old warnings.
- Ask your host whether the domain is using the PHP version and document root you expect, and whether a recent server change, disabled extension, quota, or permission issue is reported.
- Provide support with the exact timestamp, fatal-error text, file path, line number, PHP version, and the isolation steps you already performed. Redact passwords, keys, and personal data.
Hosting support can inspect web-server and PHP-FPM logs, resource limits, ownership, and configuration that are not visible from WordPress. If the host confirms a server fault, restore the last known-good backup only after preserving the logs; otherwise the evidence needed to identify the cause may be lost.
10. Clean up after the fix
- Set
WP_DEBUGback tofalseand remove temporary display or logging changes that are no longer needed. - Delete or protect old logs according to your security and retention requirements.
- Restore plugin and theme folder names only for components you intend to keep, then activate them one at a time.
- Update WordPress, PHP-compatible plugins, and themes from trusted sources after confirming compatibility.
- Test the home page, a representative post, forms, media uploads, scheduled tasks, and the administrator area. A page loading is not proof that every request path is healthy.
- Record the trigger and the successful repair so the same PHP, plugin, or deployment change can be checked before the next update.
Common mistakes that prolong the outage
- Deleting everything immediately: this destroys rollback options and can remove plugin data. Rename folders first.
- Turning on visible debugging: detailed paths and configuration can be exposed to visitors. Log privately with display disabled.
- Changing PHP and plugins at the same time: you lose the ability to identify which change fixed or caused the failure.
- Assuming a warning is the fatal error: use the fatal exception and its file path, not an earlier notice, as your isolation target.
- Leaving debug mode enabled: restore production-safe settings as soon as the incident is over.
- Applying broad permissions: making every file writable can create a security weakness without fixing ownership or code errors.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fix the error without access to wp-admin?
Yes. Use the recovery email if available; otherwise edit wp-config.php, read wp-content/debug.log, inspect the server log, and rename the suspect plugin or theme directory through SFTP or your host’s file manager.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I rename the entire plugins folder or one plugin?
Rename one named plugin when the log identifies it. Rename the whole folder only when the cause is unknown or the dashboard cannot load, then restore and test plugins individually.
Will changing the theme delete my content?
Switching themes does not delete posts or pages, but it can change layouts, menus, widgets, and custom functionality. Keep the original theme files and switch back only after repairing them.
Is increasing memory always the answer?
No. Increase the limit only when the log shows memory exhaustion, and investigate the request or extension consuming memory. A higher limit cannot correct syntax errors, incompatible PHP functions, or broken updates.
When should I contact my hosting provider?
Contact the host when server logs point outside WordPress, PHP settings or extensions are inaccessible, permissions or ownership are unclear, or the site remains broken after plugin and theme isolation. Include the exact fatal message and timestamp so support can search the correct log entries.
