A WooCommerce store is ready to launch only after a complete customer journey works: products display correctly, the right tax and shipping rules appear for real addresses, a payment succeeds and fails predictably, order and notification records are created, and the site is intentionally switched out of Coming soon mode. Use this WooCommerce go-live checklist in order, then repeat the final test after any major extension, theme, tax or shipping change.

1. Confirm the catalogue customers will actually buy

The official WooCommerce setup sequence starts with products. Do not treat the catalogue as finished merely because products exist in the dashboard; check the storefront view a customer will use.

Published products and prices

  • Open the public product page for every launch product and confirm it is published, not still a draft or private item.
  • Check the displayed regular and sale prices, currency, decimal formatting and any variation prices.
  • Verify that products intended to be purchasable have the correct stock status. If inventory management is enabled, check the quantity and the behavior when an item is out of stock.
  • Use the product page, shop page, category pages and search to make sure the item is discoverable where you expect it to be.

Images, variations and purchase controls

  • Load the main image and gallery images from the public site, including on a product with variations.
  • Select each variation and confirm that its price, image, stock message and add-to-cart control change correctly.
  • Add products to the cart, change quantities, remove an item and return to the shop. The cart total should update without stale prices or duplicated lines.
  • Check that downloadable, virtual, subscription or back-order products (if used) show the intended fields and fulfillment instructions. Do not leave test products or placeholder copy visible.

Record one representative product for the final launch test: it should exercise the normal price, inventory, tax and shipping path that most customers will use.

2. Connect and test payments before switching to live mode

Connect at least one payment method and test both the customer-facing checkout and the order status created in WooCommerce. A payment that appears successful to the shopper but leaves an incorrect status in the admin is not a successful launch.

Run a payment test in test mode

  1. Open the payment extension’s settings and enable its documented test or sandbox mode.
  2. Use the extension’s test credentials or test card details, not a real card number, and place an order through the normal storefront checkout.
  3. Confirm what the customer sees after submitting payment: the success page, order number, payment message and any redirect should be coherent.
  4. Open the order in WooCommerce and verify the resulting status, payment reference and total. Check that the expected order email is generated.
  5. Trigger the extension’s documented declined-payment scenario. The checkout should remain usable and show a clear explanation without exposing sensitive gateway details.

Test mode is intended to exercise the same order path as a real card order. On WooPayments pages, test data is shown separately and an administrative notice reminds you that the account is in test mode; use that notice as a final safeguard against mistaking test activity for revenue.

Complete the live-account checks

  • Before launch, switch the gateway to live mode and confirm that the account is enabled for the currency and country in which you will sell.
  • Verify that payouts are configured for the correct bank account. A successful authorization is not enough if the money is routed to an old or incorrect account.
  • Check the public checkout once more after changing modes. Test mode credentials must no longer be accepted, and the live gateway should display the intended payment methods.
  • Keep a written record of which mode was active when you performed each test.

If you need a test without processing a real payment, the official Test Orders extension can create test orders without charging a payment method. It requires WooCommerce 5.0.0 or later. Use it for integration and workflow checks, but still perform a payment-extension test because a test order that bypasses payment cannot validate authorization, decline handling or payout configuration.

3. Set up sales tax and test the addresses that matter

Choose your tax approach before launch and connect any tax service you intend to use. WooCommerce Tax can calculate tax at checkout, but it does not file returns or determine where your business has a tax obligation. Those compliance decisions remain yours and may require an accountant or local tax professional.

Requirements for WooCommerce Tax

  • Complete the store address in WooCommerce settings, including the country and the locality information required for your jurisdiction.
  • Connect the site to WordPress.com as required by the WooCommerce Tax service.
  • Confirm whether prices are entered and displayed inclusive or exclusive of tax, then check that the checkout wording matches that choice.
  • Review the tax classes and product assignments. A reduced-rate or zero-rated product must not inherit the standard rate by accident.

Use representative customer addresses

For a US store, place a checkout test with an address in the same state as the store address. Then test an address in another state. An out-of-state result of $0 can be expected when no additional rate applies; it is not automatically evidence that the tax setup is broken. Compare both results with the obligations and rates that apply to your business.

If you sell outside your home country, separately check VAT, GST or other applicable rules. A checkout calculator does not register you, file a return, collect remittance documents or decide where you owe tax. Save the address and cart combinations you tested so a future tax-setting change can be repeated consistently.

4. Verify shipping zones, rates and free-shipping thresholds

Shipping is part of the price promise. A customer should see a method and rate that match the destination before paying, not discover an unavailable method after entering a full address.

Check the configuration

  • Confirm the store location used by shipping calculations.
  • Review every shipping zone and its destination boundaries. Look for overlapping zones or a catch-all zone that is listed before a more specific region.
  • Open each method and check its cost, tax treatment, processing time text and enabled/disabled state.
  • Confirm that the methods shown for a zone are the methods you can actually fulfill.

Test sample addresses and order totals

  1. Choose a representative address in every region you serve, including a region that uses a different zone or carrier rate.
  2. At checkout, enter the address before and after adding a product. Confirm that the expected methods appear and that unavailable methods disappear.
  3. Repeat with a cart below the free-shipping threshold and another cart at or above the threshold. Verify the threshold uses the intended subtotal and that free shipping does not appear early.
  4. Test a postal code or locality at the edge of a zone. This catches gaps that a single central address will not reveal.

Keep the shipping test addresses with your launch record. When you add a destination or alter a threshold, these same cases provide a quick regression test.

5. Place the complete WooCommerce test order

The test order is the launch gate. Start as a shopper and continue through the administrative record and every notification. Official WooCommerce guidance notes that test orders can trigger order emails, appear in analytics and help expose integration problems.

Customer-side path

  1. Open the storefront in a fresh session and select the representative product.
  2. Add it to the cart, adjust the quantity, and proceed to checkout.
  3. Enter a realistic customer name, email address, billing address and shipping address from one of your shipping test cases.
  4. Choose the intended shipping method and confirm that the tax, shipping charge, discount (if applicable) and grand total are correct.
  5. Submit payment using the gateway’s test credentials while the gateway is in test mode, or use the Test Orders extension when you specifically need a no-charge workflow test.
  6. Capture the order confirmation page and confirm it includes the order number, purchased items, totals, billing/shipping details and the expected next steps.

Admin, email and integration checks

  • Find the order in WooCommerce and verify its status, line items, tax, shipping, customer data and payment reference.
  • Confirm the customer receives the expected confirmation email and that the sender name, reply-to address, branding and links are correct.
  • Check the administrative new-order notification and any fulfillment, download or integration notification that should be triggered.
  • Verify that the order appears in WooCommerce analytics as expected. If an external fulfillment, inventory or accounting integration is connected, confirm that it receives the order once and does not create duplicates.
  • Check that cancellation, refund or status changes produce the intended follow-up notifications.

Optional real-money verification

A common operational practice is to make one small real purchase after test-mode checks and then refund it, verifying that money moves in both directions. Treat this as optional and account for the gateway’s refund timing and fees; it is not a substitute for confirming that the gateway is configured for normal customer transactions.

6. Decide what happens to Coming soon mode

WooCommerce’s setup checklist ends with launch, but the launch state is a deliberate choice. If Coming soon mode is enabled, visitors may see a holding page while administrators can continue to view the store. Before announcing the opening:

  • Decide whether the public should see the complete store immediately or whether you need a staged opening.
  • If opening now, switch off Coming soon mode and view the site in a logged-out browser to confirm that normal visitors can browse, add to cart and check out.
  • If keeping it enabled, confirm that your own test sessions are not masking a public-access problem and set an explicit date or condition for disabling it.

Make this decision after the final test order, not before. Otherwise a successful administrator test can conceal a storefront that is still hidden from customers.

7. Protect the launch with basic security and recovery checks

Before changing payment, tax or shipping settings for launch, take a complete backup that you know how to restore. Verify that the public checkout uses HTTPS and that the browser does not report certificate or mixed-content warnings. Many hosting plans include a certificate, but the only useful launch check is the certificate presented by your actual domain.

  • Open the home page, product page, cart and checkout over the final domain, not an old staging URL.
  • Confirm that administrator accounts use strong, unique credentials and that unused test accounts and keys are removed or disabled.
  • Record the current WooCommerce, WordPress, theme and payment-extension versions so a later update can be correlated with any checkout change.
  • Keep the backup and a rollback contact or procedure available during the first live orders.

8. Final launch checklist

Run this short gate immediately before announcing the store:

  • Products are published with correct prices, images, variations and stock status.
  • At least one payment method is connected, the gateway is in live mode, and payouts point to the correct bank account.
  • A successful payment and a deliberate failed payment have both been tested, with a clear customer-facing error for the failure.
  • Tax settings match the store address, WordPress.com connection and the jurisdictions you serve; you have not confused calculation with filing responsibility.
  • Shipping zones, methods, regional rates and free-shipping thresholds work for sample addresses in every served region.
  • A complete order created the expected confirmation page, admin record, emails, analytics entry and connected-system events.
  • HTTPS is valid, a restorable backup exists, and the final domain is the one customers will use.
  • Coming soon mode is either intentionally disabled or intentionally retained with a clear opening plan.

Only after every item has an observed result—not merely a checked setting—should you announce the WooCommerce store.
