How to Fix Total War: Warhammer III Crashes and a Stuck Copyright Screen

A copyright-screen freeze does not point to one confirmed cause. Follow a safe, storefront-aware sequence to verify files, test without mods, check PC settings, and prepare useful support diagnostics.

If Total War: Warhammer III freezes on the copyright screen or crashes during startup, that symptom alone does not identify the cause. SEGA’s support guidance covers general launch problems, not a confirmed copyright-screen-specific defect. Start with your game client’s file check, then test mods and PC settings in a low-risk order; back up local data before resetting preferences.

Start with the game client you use

Verify the installation using the storefront where you own or launch the game. The menu path differs by platform.

Client File check Additional client-specific step
Steam In your Library, right-click Total War: Warhammer III, choose Properties > Installed Files, then select the option to verify the integrity of the game files. [SEGA Support] Steam Overlay is one of the environment checks SEGA recommends considering. [SEGA Support]
Epic Games Open the game’s Library menu, choose Manage, then select Verify Files. [SEGA Support] If Epic’s launcher itself has display problems, SEGA also suggests checking for launcher updates and clearing its webcache. Those steps address launcher issues, not a confirmed game-specific cause. [SEGA Support]
Microsoft Store / Xbox App Use the platform guide’s Verify And Repair flow rather than Steam’s instructions. [SEGA Support] Use the Microsoft Store/Xbox App-specific troubleshooting steps in that guide.

Test without mods

Mods can stop working correctly after a game update, and leftover manually installed files or mod launchers can complicate a clean test. SEGA recommends removing mods and checking for residual files before verifying the installation again. [Steam troubleshooting] [Epic troubleshooting]

  1. Disable mods in the game client or mod manager. For Steam Workshop content, unsubscribe from the relevant items.
  2. Check the game’s data directory and the Steam Workshop content directory for manually installed or leftover mod files. Remove only files you can identify as mod-related.
  3. Verify the game files again using the storefront steps above.
  4. Launch the game without mods. If it starts, re-enable mods selectively to identify whether one is involved.

Before changing a mod setup, consider your campaign saves: a save that depends on a mod may require that mod or a new campaign to continue. [SEGA’s mod guide]

Check Windows, graphics, and security settings

SEGA’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends checking these areas. They are diagnostic possibilities, not confirmed causes of a copyright-screen stall. [Steam troubleshooting] [Epic troubleshooting]

  • Install available Windows updates and current graphics drivers.
  • If the PC has both integrated and dedicated graphics, check that the game is assigned to the intended dedicated GPU rather than an energy-saving setting.
  • Consider whether antivirus or firewall rules are blocking the game, and whether Steam Overlay affects startup if you use Steam.
  • SEGA lists Visual C++ components as a possible missing dependency. Treat this as a check, not evidence that a missing component is the reason your game hangs.

Reset local preferences only after making a backup

SEGA says corrupted preferences or cached data may contribute to startup problems. To test this, back up the Creative Assembly folder under AppDataRoamingThe Creative Assembly, then move the Warhammer III-specific folder out of that location and try launching. Keep the backup so you can restore settings and other local data if the test makes no difference. [Steam troubleshooting] [Epic troubleshooting]

Give SEGA support useful diagnostics

If the game still crashes or stalls, submit a support request with a DxDiag report and, if available, the latest mdmp file. SEGA’s mod guide specifically recommends these for unresolved issues. [SEGA’s mod guide]

SEGA’s separate Warhammer III guide for an offline or connection message asks for mp_log, antivirus details, DxDiag, and msinfo32. That request is for online-connection problems; it should not be treated as a confirmed diagnostic checklist for a copyright-screen startup hang. [SEGA’s offline-message guide]
