How to Fix Uncle Lee’s Cookbook: Five Recipes for Disaster Crashes or Won’t Launch on Switch

By VGSources Team 12 min read

If Uncle Lee’s Cookbook: Five Recipes for Disaster crashes or refuses to start on Nintendo Switch, follow Nintendo’s downloaded-software sequence: restart the console, update the system and game, check the game for corrupt data, then delete and redownload it if necessary. If the game is on a microSD card, test a fresh download in system memory. These are platform-level remedies; no title-specific crash notice, workaround, or patch is established in Nintendo’s official information.

First, confirm which release you are troubleshooting

Nintendo’s US store lists Uncle Lee’s Cookbook: Five Recipes for Disaster as a digital Nintendo Switch game. The listing gives an October 8, 2026 release date and a 174 MB download. DIONOUS GAMES is listed as publisher and Relatively Painless Games as developer. The store page also labels the game “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch” for Switch 2. That is Nintendo’s general compatibility label, not a promise that every individual launch attempt will succeed.

Those details matter because the procedure below is for the digital edition shown on Nintendo’s listing. If your symptom is only a question about language, voice, or play mode, it is not the same as a launch failure. You can verify the edition and compatibility label on Nintendo’s official store listing.

Record the exact failure before changing anything

Write down what happens and when. “Won’t launch” can mean that the icon does nothing, an error appears immediately, or the game opens and then closes. A crash during play points to a different troubleshooting branch than a failure before the title screen.

  • Incredible speeds in a microSD card officially licensed for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo OLED, and Nintendo Switch Lite systems
  • Spend less time waiting and more time playing with read speeds up to 100MB/s(1) and write speeds up to 90MB/s(1).
  • Instantly add up to 256GB (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
  • Store your downloaded games, screenshots and video captures in 1 place so you can travel light.
  • Note the exact wording of any message, including punctuation and an error code.
  • Record whether the software closes at the icon, during loading, or after you begin playing.
  • Check whether the download is installed on the console’s system memory or a microSD card.
  • Note whether the problem occurs in handheld, tabletop, and TV mode, if you have tested more than one.
  • Use the normal HOME-menu restart first unless the console itself is frozen.

Nintendo’s examples include “Unable to start software. Return to the HOME Menu and try again” and, on Switch 2, “There was a problem, and the software needed to close.” Those are examples of platform messages, not evidence that every player will see them. If a code appears, search Nintendo Support for that exact code before trying unrelated fixes; Nintendo says some errors have their own instructions.

What you need before starting

The first checks cost nothing, but prepare a few basics so the sequence is not interrupted:

  • An internet connection for the system update, game update, and any redownload.
  • The Nintendo Account that owns the digital title, because the game must be downloaded again from the account that purchased it.
  • At least the listed 174 MB of available storage, plus whatever temporary space the console requests during installation.
  • A few minutes to let updates and downloads finish completely before launching.

You do not need to buy a microSD card just because the game crashes. Nintendo’s storage test is conditional: it is useful when the card may be contributing, while the store listing does not say that extra storage is required for this 174 MB title. A replacement card is an escalation option only if the system-memory test points toward the card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 1: restart the Switch normally

A restart clears a temporary software state without requiring you to remove the game. On a responsive console:

  1. Hold the console’s POWER button for at least three seconds.
  2. Select Power Options.
  3. Choose Restart.
  4. After the HOME Menu returns, start Uncle Lee’s Cookbook once.

If the Switch does not respond to the menu, hold POWER for about 20 seconds to force it to shut down, then press POWER again to start it. Nintendo documents the normal and forced-shutdown procedure in its guide to general problems with downloaded software. A forced shutdown is a recovery step for an unresponsive system; it is not a title-specific fix.

Step 2: update the console

Run the system update before checking the game’s files. The console must be connected to the internet to download an available update.

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Scroll down and select System.
  3. Choose System Update.
  4. Allow the console to finish and restart if it asks you to.

When the update completes, try the game again. If the console reports that it is already current, continue to the game update rather than repeating the restart. Do not interrupt the console while it is installing; an incomplete update leaves you without a meaningful test.

  • EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].

Step 3: update the game itself

Downloaded software can have a newer version even when the console is current. Update Uncle Lee’s Cookbook from its HOME-menu icon:

  1. Highlight the game without opening it.
  2. Press the + or − button.
  3. Select Software Update.
  4. Choose Via the Internet.

Let the download and installation finish, then launch the game from the HOME Menu. If no update is offered, proceed to the data check. Do not assume that an update exists merely because the game will not start; Nintendo’s official materials for this title do not identify a crash-specific patch. A current version rules out one common platform condition, but it does not prove the game itself is free of defects.

Step 4: check for corrupt data

Nintendo provides a built-in check for damaged downloadable files. Update the console first, then use this path:

  1. Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
  2. Select Data Management.
  3. Choose Manage Software.
  4. Select Uncle Lee’s Cookbook: Five Recipes for Disaster.
  5. Choose Check for Corrupt Data.

The check reports whether the installed software has a data problem. Follow any on-screen instruction it provides. Nintendo’s menu path is also published in its instructions for checking corrupt data on downloadable software. This operation checks the installed game files; it does not establish that a particular save file or a game-specific bug has been repaired. If the check finds nothing, continue with the redownload rather than treating a clean result as proof that the console hardware is at fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: delete and redownload the game

If the restart, system update, game update, and corrupt-data check do not resolve the failure, Nintendo’s launch guidance recommends redownloading the software. Because this edition is digital and listed at 174 MB, the redownload is relatively small, but you still need a working internet connection and enough available storage.

  1. Open System Settings and select Data Management.
  2. Use the software-management option to remove the installed game, following the console’s confirmation prompts.
  3. Return to the HOME Menu and redownload the title from the Nintendo eShop account that owns it.
  4. Wait for the installation to complete before launching it.

Nintendo’s support article for software that cannot start on Nintendo Switch describes redownloading as a later troubleshooting step. The official information does not say that redownloading repairs title-specific save-data problems, so do not treat it as a guaranteed save recovery method. Read each deletion prompt carefully, avoid removing unrelated software, and do not power off while the new copy is installing.

Redownloading is different from simply opening the game again. It creates a fresh installation to test whether the original downloaded files were incomplete or damaged. If the same failure appears immediately after a clean installation, record that result for Nintendo Support instead of repeating the same download indefinitely.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Step 6: test system memory if a microSD card may be involved

Use this branch only after the earlier checks, or when the failure appeared after installing or moving the game to a microSD card. Nintendo’s launch-error guidance recommends removing the card and downloading the software directly to system memory. The purpose is to separate a storage-path problem from a general launch problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Power the console down normally. If it is frozen, use the 20-second forced shutdown described earlier.
  2. Remove the microSD card according to Nintendo’s hardware instructions for your Switch model.
  3. Start the console and redownload Uncle Lee’s Cookbook so the installation goes to system memory.
  4. Launch the fresh system-memory installation.

If the game works in system memory but not from the card, the storage path is relevant. Nintendo lists replacing the microSD card as an option when the issue persists; that is a conditional repair path, not a reason to buy extra storage in advance. Since the title is listed at 174 MB, the listing does not establish that additional capacity is necessary. If the game fails identically from system memory, a replacement card is less likely to address that particular launch symptom.

Choose the right branch for the symptom

The icon returns you to HOME immediately

Run the full sequence in order: restart, system update, software update, corrupt-data check, and redownload. If the game was on microSD, repeat the redownload to system memory before considering a replacement card. Keep the exact message if one appears, because Nintendo may have a separate article for that wording.

The game opens and then closes during play

Apply the same update and data-integrity checks, but record where the closure occurs and whether it repeats at the same point. A repeatable location is useful information for support. The official information does not identify a known Uncle Lee’s Cookbook scene, recipe, or mode that causes a crash, so do not infer a title-specific trigger from one failed session.

Switch 2 displays “There was a problem, and the software needed to close”

Nintendo’s Switch 2 procedure is to restart, install current system and game updates, check for corrupt data, and redownload to system memory if necessary. Follow those steps in that order. Nintendo’s store label says the game is supported on Switch 2, with behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch, but that compatibility statement is not a diagnosis of an individual crash. The platform procedure is documented in Nintendo’s article about software that closed because an error occurred.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You see “Unable to start software. Return to the HOME Menu and try again”

Treat it as a launch error and use Nintendo’s launch-error sequence, including the system-memory test when a microSD card is involved. Search Nintendo Support for the exact wording if the general sequence does not work; Nintendo notes that specific errors can have their own instructions.

You are unsure whether this is a game-card problem

The Nintendo listing for this title identifies the edition as digital software. That means the relevant checks are download, installation, update, and storage location rather than cleaning or reseating a physical game card. If your HOME Menu shows a different edition or a different product, verify the title before applying this guide.

Cost, storage, and what not to buy

Restarting, updating, checking corrupt data, and redownloading are software troubleshooting steps; Nintendo does not charge for those procedures. The game’s listed download size is 174 MB, so the store page does not support a claim that a larger card is required. A compatible microSD card becomes relevant only if installing to system memory changes the result or Nintendo Support directs you toward replacing the existing card.

Do not pay for an unrelated “game repair” service, cleaner, or third-party download. The supported path is the console’s own menus and Nintendo Support. No verified service or paid utility is needed to perform these checks, and no success rate is established for any one step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the current official information does—and does not—establish

Nintendo’s store page confirms the digital release, 174 MB size, October 8, 2026 release date, publisher, developer, supported play modes, listed languages, and Switch 2 compatibility label. Nintendo’s support pages provide the platform procedures above. They do not identify a confirmed, title-specific crash notice, a known recipe or level that fails, a publisher workaround, or a patch that specifically addresses launch failures for this game.

That distinction matters. The troubleshooting sequence is appropriate because it is Nintendo’s standard process for downloaded Switch software, not because a particular defect has been proven in Uncle Lee’s Cookbook. The absence of a listed notice is not proof that no player has ever encountered a problem, and software updates or support guidance can change. Recheck Nintendo Support and announcements from DIONOUS GAMES or Relatively Painless Games if a later update changes the situation.

When to contact Nintendo Support

Escalate after the prescribed steps fail, especially if the game still will not start from system memory. Before contacting support, prepare:

  • The exact error message or code.
  • Your Switch model, including whether the failure occurs on an original Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch 2.
  • Whether the game was installed on a microSD card or system memory when it failed.
  • Whether the crash happens at launch, during loading, or during play.
  • Which steps you completed and what changed after each one.

Use Nintendo’s support flow for the matching error wording when one exists. If there is no exact match, describe the symptom in the same terms shown on the console and state that you have already updated, checked for corrupt data, redownloaded, and tested system memory where applicable. This prevents support from having to repeat steps you have already completed. If the problem began after a move to microSD, mention that timing specifically.

A compact decision checklist

  1. Record: save the exact message, code, point of failure, console model, and storage location.
  2. Restart: POWER for three seconds, Power Options, Restart. If frozen, hold POWER for about 20 seconds.
  3. Update the console: System Settings > System > System Update.
  4. Update the game: highlight the icon, press + or −, then Software Update > Via the Internet.
  5. Check files: System Settings > Data Management > Manage Software > game > Check for Corrupt Data.
  6. Redownload: remove the installed software and download it again from the owning Nintendo eShop account.
  7. Isolate storage: if microSD may be involved, remove the card and install the 174 MB title to system memory.
  8. Escalate: contact Nintendo Support with the exact message, console model, storage location, and results.

This order starts with reversible software checks, moves to a clean installation, and uses the microSD test only when storage could be contributing. It does not claim a guaranteed success rate or a game-specific cure; it is the complete official platform procedure currently applicable to this digital Switch release.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Uncle Lee’s Cookbook a physical cartridge or a digital Switch game?

Nintendo’s US store lists this edition as digital Nintendo Switch software. Use download, update, corrupt-data, redownload, and storage-location checks rather than cartridge-cleaning steps.

How much storage does the game need?

Nintendo lists the download at 174 MB. You still need enough free space for the installation process, but the listing does not establish that a microSD card is necessary.

Will deleting and redownloading fix my save data?

Nintendo recommends redownloading as a launch-error step, but the official information does not establish that it repairs a title-specific save-data problem. Read every deletion prompt carefully and do not treat redownloading as guaranteed save recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I buy a new microSD card first?

No. First remove the card and install the game to system memory when storage may be involved. Consider replacing the card only if that test or Nintendo Support indicates a storage-path problem.

What should I do if Switch 2 says the software needed to close?

Restart the console, install current system and game updates, check for corrupt data, and redownload to system memory if needed. Nintendo labels the game as supported on Switch 2, but that label is not a diagnosis of a particular crash.

What information will Nintendo Support need?

Have the exact error message or code, Switch model, storage location, failure point, and a list of the steps you already tried. Mention whether the game works from system memory.

Is there a known Uncle Lee’s Cookbook crash patch or recipe that fails?

No title-specific crash notice, workaround, or patch is identified in Nintendo’s official listing and support materials. Use the general downloaded-software procedure and check for later announcements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

For Uncle Lee’s Cookbook: Five Recipes for Disaster on Switch, restart first, update the console and game, check for corrupt data, then redownload the 174 MB digital title. If it was on microSD, test a fresh system-memory installation before considering card replacement. Keep the exact error and storage details, and contact Nintendo Support if the game still will not launch.
