If Valheim stops loading mods after a game patch, first check whether the affected mods and the Valheim-specific BepInEx pack support your installed game build. Then identify which part is failing: the loader, the manager’s launch configuration, an individual plugin, or multiplayer version matching. Mods do not all become compatible at once, so updating everything—or reinstalling the game—may not be the right first move.

Before changing anything, identify what broke
A Valheim update can make a plugin incompatible, require a newer Valheim-configured BepInEx pack, or expose a problem with the mod manager’s launch setup. Those are different failures and call for different fixes. A game that starts without mods is not the same problem as a crash during startup, a black screen, or a server rejecting a client.

- Valheim version: note the installed game build, rather than simply writing “latest.”
- Mod setup: record whether you use Gale, Thunderstore Mod Manager, r2modman, or a manual installation, and which profile you launched.
- Loader and plugin versions: note the installed BepInExPack Valheim revision, the affected mod versions, and any dependencies named by those mods.
- Platform and installation: identify the operating system and whether the game came from Steam or another storefront.
- Symptom and error: note whether the game fails to launch, starts without mods, displays a black screen, crashes after loading, or fails only in multiplayer. Copy any specific error text.
If you have a heavily modded setup, preserve your saves and export or otherwise back up the known-working profile before making changes. The r2modman Valheim guide specifically recommends exporting a working profile before a game patch. Avoid changing several variables at once: if the game starts working, you want to know which change fixed it.
A useful way to keep the test controlled is to change one layer at a time. First establish whether the loader launches; next check whether plugins appear; then test the plugin or dependency associated with the failure. If you update the game, loader, and every mod together, you may get a working game but lose the clue that would help diagnose a later failure.
Check compatibility before reinstalling
Start with the package page and release notes for each affected mod. Look for an explicit update or compatibility note that applies to your installed Valheim build, and check whether the mod lists dependencies that also need updating. A newly published mod version is not automatically proof that every other plugin in the profile is compatible.

Next, check for a compatible revision of BepInExPack Valheim, the community-configured BepInEx pack used by these instructions. It is not interchangeable with generic upstream BepInEx instructions: the Valheim pack includes its own configuration, launch scripts, and preloader changes. Install its dependencies through your manager when possible, and use the pack’s own instructions if installing manually.
Do not assume that all mods support the newest game build, or that a profile working on one build will work unchanged on another. Compatibility depends on the game build, loader-pack revision, plugin and dependency versions, platform, and—in multiplayer—server requirements. The project documentation does not provide a complete compatibility matrix for every Valheim mod.
Check the affected package pages individually rather than treating a patch as a single all-or-nothing compatibility event. One plugin may have a compatible release while another is still waiting for its maintainer. If a mod page has no update or compatibility note for your game build, do not infer support just because the package installs or another player’s different profile launches.

Confirm that BepInEx is starting
With the documented BepInExPack Valheim setup, a BepInEx console should appear on Windows when the loader starts. If Valheim launches but there is no sign of BepInEx, check the platform instructions and manager configuration before troubleshooting every plugin individually.

Windows
Launch the profile through the manager you installed and check whether the BepInEx console appears. If it does, the loader is starting; move on to checking whether the plugins load or whether a particular one crashes. If it does not, verify the manager’s configured game directory and the launch arguments in Steam as described below.
Linux
The pack’s Linux instructions require making start_game_bepinex.sh executable and using ./start_game_bepinex.sh %command% in Steam’s launch options. If the script is not executable or the launch option is missing or overridden, the game may start without BepInEx. Follow the pack’s instructions for your installation rather than substituting a generic launch command.
Apple Silicon
The pack states that BepInEx does not run natively on Apple Silicon and documents launching through Rosetta with this Steam launch option:
/usr/bin/arch -x86_64 /bin/bash ./start_game_bepinex.sh %command%Without the x86_64 prefix, the game can start without BepInEx. Use the pack’s current platform instructions if the documented command or installation method has changed.
If the game launches but no mods load
When Valheim opens normally but plugins are absent, first distinguish “loader did not start” from “loader started but plugins did not load.” On Windows, the documented pack’s BepInEx console is one useful sign. Then check the manager’s selected profile, installation path, and Steam launch arguments.
- Confirm the profile. Start the same profile where the mods are installed, not a different profile or a direct game launch that bypasses the manager.
- Compare the game directories. In r2modman, compare the configured Valheim game directory with the path shown by Steam’s Browse local files option for Valheim. If they do not point to the same installation, correct the configured path using the manager’s instructions.
- Check Steam launch options. Confirm that the launch-argument box has not been overridden or replaced. Linux and Apple Silicon also require the platform-specific launch setup described above.
- Check the loader pack and dependencies. Review the pack and affected mod pages for a compatible revision and required dependencies, then install the applicable updates through the manager where possible.
The r2modman troubleshooting wiki documents the directory and launch-argument checks. If those are correct and the loader starts, investigate the individual plugins rather than reinstalling the game as a first resort.
For an automated installation, the BepInExPack Valheim README recommends Gale, Thunderstore Mod Manager, or r2modman and launching through the manager. A manager helps install the pack and dependencies, but it does not establish that every plugin is compatible with a new game build. With a manual install, you must follow the pack’s own instructions and use a clean game folder as the starting point; mixing manual files with a manager-managed setup can make it harder to tell which copy or launch path is being used.

If startup crashes, isolate the plugin
A crash that appears only when the modded setup loads is a reason to narrow down the plugins. The community installation guide recommends removing plugins from the test setup and adding them back in groups to identify the failing mod.
- Close Valheim and make a backup of the profile or save a copy of the plugin files you plan to move.
- Move the plugins out of
BepInEx/pluginsso the game can attempt a clean start without them. Do not delete your only copy. - Start Valheim again. If it now starts cleanly, the failure is associated with one or more plugins or their dependencies, rather than the same full plugin set.
- Return half of the plugins to the folder and test again. If the crash returns, the problem is in the group you restored; if it does not, investigate the group still removed.
- Repeat the split until you identify a likely offender. Check that mod’s release notes and required dependencies for compatibility with your game build and loader pack.
- Restore the rest of the profile only after checking the affected mod. If you cannot identify a compatible version, leave that plugin out while testing the others.
Changing groups is a practical way to narrow down a large plugin set, not proof that a particular mod is universally broken. A dependency or interaction between plugins can also be involved. Keep the game build, plugin set, and error text consistent between tests so each result is useful.
If the game still crashes with the plugins removed, the test has not established that a plugin is the cause. Recheck whether the loader pack itself is compatible and whether the manager is launching the intended game installation. Conversely, if removing the plugins lets the game start, add them back methodically; putting the entire folder back at once only recreates the original failure without narrowing it down.
If r2modman shows a black screen
For a black screen reported by r2modman, its troubleshooting wiki directs users to run the profile’s preloader fix:
- Open the affected profile in r2modman.
- Go to Settings → Debugging → Run preloader fix.
- Wait for Steam validation to finish before testing the profile again.
This is a targeted r2modman troubleshooting step for the black-screen symptom. If the game still fails, return to the compatibility, launch, and plugin checks rather than treating the fix as a general repair for every startup problem.

A third-party Valheim guide reports that creating an empty folder named unstripped_corlib in the Valheim installation directory can resolve a particular preloader error. Use this only when the error explicitly names the missing unstripped_corlib folder. It is a reported, symptom-specific workaround—not a standard step for a missing mod, a generic crash, or a black screen.
If the error does not name that folder, do not add it as a guess. Check the exact error against the loader and mod documentation first.

If the loader installation appears corrupted
If ordinary path and compatibility checks do not resolve the problem and r2modman indicates a damaged installation, its troubleshooting wiki documents a profile-export and re-import approach. Follow the current wiki steps for the exact controls in your installed version; the sequence below describes the documented approach without assuming every release uses identical labels.
- Disable the manager’s download cache as directed by the r2modman troubleshooting instructions.
- Export the affected profile and import it again.
- If the export process indicates that the BepInEx installation is broken, redownload BepInEx as directed by the wiki.
- Test the re-imported profile before restoring or changing other parts of the setup.
Keep a separate backup of your working profile and saves. Exporting or rebuilding a profile is different from repairing a particular plugin, so do not use it as the first step when the game’s error already points to one mod or a launch-path problem.

Manual installation is also documented: start with a clean game folder and extract the pack’s contents into the Valheim installation directory. The community guide’s modding instructions assume the Steam version. It describes Microsoft Store and Game Pass installs as harder to mod, and says Xbox clients cannot load mods. These are platform constraints; they do not show that a recent Valheim patch broke a particular plugin. If you use a non-Steam PC installation, verify that the pack and manager support that installation before applying Steam-specific paths or launch arguments.

A multiplayer failure is not automatically a client-side mod problem. The server guide distinguishes client-only mods from server-side mods: a server-side mod must be installed on the server, and some server-side mods may also be required on clients. Check each package’s requirements instead of telling every player to install every mod.

Change one side or one mod at a time when testing, and record which clients can connect. That helps separate a server installation issue from a plugin that prevents the client from loading or joining.
Do not assume the same installation rule applies to every package. A client-only mod does not automatically belong on the dedicated server, while a server-side mod does need to be installed there and may also require matching client installs. The package’s own server/client requirements determine where it belongs. When comparing a group’s setup, check exact versions on the server and the clients that require each mod, not just whether everyone has a package with the same name.

A practical recovery order
Use this sequence to avoid rebuilding a working setup before you know the cause:
- Back up saves and preserve or export the working profile.
- Record the game, loader, mod, and dependency versions, plus the platform and exact symptom.
- Check release notes for the affected mods and a compatible BepInExPack Valheim revision.
- Confirm that the loader starts and that the manager points to the actual Valheim installation.
- Apply platform-specific launch instructions where required.
- If the game crashes with plugins, isolate them by adding groups back and checking the likely offender’s requirements.
