How the New ARC Raiders Grappling Hook Works: Range, Cooldowns, and Limitations

The Frozen Trail Grappling Hook uses a rope-and-pivot movement style, but its exact range and resource costs are not published in the cited notes. Here is what the preview observed—and what belongs to Snap Hook instead.

The Grappling Hook is a new mobility item in ARC Raiders’ Frozen Trail update, released October 8, 2026. In a preview session published the day before launch, PC Gamer’s Morgan Park described a rope that attaches to a pivot point, letting a Raider climb toward it, descend, or swing. The preview also reported that the hook could be redeployed in midair without a cooldown or use limit. Embark’s official notes do not publish an exact Grappling Hook range, so there is no verified maximum distance to quote.

What the Grappling Hook does

The Grappling Hook is an in-game mobility gadget introduced in Frozen Trail 2.0. Embark Studios’ October 8, 2026 update notes and launch announcement confirm it as part of the update. PC Gamer’s Morgan Park reported on October 7, after a hands-on preview session, that the gadget leaves a simulated rope attached to a pivot point. It is therefore not simply a zipline that pulls the player directly to a selected spot.

Once attached, the rope gives the player several kinds of movement: climb toward the attachment point, descend along the rope, or swing through the space around it. Park reported using it to climb buildings, swing between rooftops, descend tall buildings, and interact with flying ARC bots. The preview describes the gadget as green tier; that is a preview report, not a detailed official item specification.

The pivot-and-rope behavior matters because the hook’s value is not limited to crossing a gap. Depending on the attachment and the Raider’s movement, it can provide a route upward, a controlled way down, or momentum across open space. Those are different uses of the same attachment, rather than separate modes with published settings.

Range, cooldowns, and costs: what is actually known

Attribute Grappling Hook Snap Hook
Range No exact maximum range is stated in the reviewed Frozen Trail notes or PC Gamer preview. Embark’s Frozen Trail notes changed the range from 20 m to 18 m.
Midair redeployment PC Gamer’s October 7, 2026 preview reports redeployment without a cooldown or use limit during its session; this is an observation, not a published balance specification. Embark says the changes are intended to prevent immediate back-to-back uses.
Durability consumption Not stated in the cited Frozen Trail notes or preview. Embark’s October 8, 2026 notes raised consumption from 2% to 4% per use.
Power cost Not stated in the cited Frozen Trail notes or preview. Embark’s October 8, 2026 notes raised cost from 50 to 60.

The central range question has a limited answer: the sources above do not establish a maximum Grappling Hook distance. Do not use the Snap Hook’s 18 m figure as a substitute. The two gadgets have similar names and both affect mobility, but Embark’s range revision is explicitly for Snap Hook.

Likewise, the absence of a published Grappling Hook cooldown, power cost, or durability cost should not be treated as proof that those values are zero. The preview’s claim is narrower: Park observed midair redeployment without a cooldown or use limit during the preview session. The report does not provide a complete account of what resource costs, conditions, or restrictions may apply in the live build.

How redeployment and chained swings work

Park’s preview says a Raider could deploy the hook again while airborne, with no cooldown or use limit, allowing swings to be chained together. In practical terms, the observation suggests the player can use one attachment to build movement, then make another attachment before landing to continue moving. That can turn a single swing into a sequence of aerial transitions rather than requiring the Raider to touch down between each use.

This is preview reporting, not a permanent guarantee or a precise set of official rules. It does not establish that every midair attempt will find a valid attachment point, that the hook can reach any surface, or that repeated use has no resource consequence. Nor does it give an exact timing window, range, or input sequence. Treat the no-cooldown observation as a useful description of what the preview writer experienced, not a numerical promise for every live-game situation.

Because no exact range or input instructions are given in the cited material, the safest way to learn the tool is to experiment with a nearby, visible attachment point in a low-risk situation. Observe whether the rope attaches, how it moves the Raider relative to that point, and whether a second deployment can be made before landing. That approach tests the actual build and context without assuming a distance or control behavior that the sources do not document.

What can go wrong: ledges, geometry, and enemies

The preview’s most useful warning is that a successful-looking climb may not finish with a successful ledge grab. Park reported reaching the top of a climb without the Raider grabbing the ledge. In other words, getting close to a roof edge is not the same as having a reliable mantle onto it. Plan for the possibility that the rope gets the Raider near the top but leaves the final transition unresolved.

Geometry can interfere as well. The preview describes the rope catching on a protruding balcony. A rope attached around buildings may interact with architectural features in ways that interrupt the intended line of movement; a direct-looking route can be obstructed by projecting structures. This is a reported example, not a complete map of which surfaces or objects block the rope.

Enemy interaction was not uniformly reliable in the preview. Park reported sliding off the Emperor enemy. Although the same article lists interactions with flying ARC bots among observed uses, it does not specify which bot types, conditions, or attachment points are consistently compatible. These examples show that enemy-based use is possible in some situations, not that every enemy is a dependable anchor.

Park characterized effective use as taking trial and error. That is a preview writer’s assessment of handling, rather than a formal difficulty rating. Taken together, the reported misses and snags suggest treating the hook as a movement tool to learn rather than assuming it will automatically place the Raider exactly on a chosen ledge or carry through every obstruction.

Grappling Hook versus Snap Hook

These names are easy to conflate, but the available evidence describes different behaviors and different levels of specification. The Grappling Hook is the new Frozen Trail item covered in the preview: rope, pivot, climbing, descending, swinging, and reported airborne redeployment. Snap Hook is the gadget addressed by Embark’s numerical range, durability, and power revisions.

Comparison Grappling Hook Snap Hook
Movement description Preview describes a rope pivot that supports climbing, swinging, and descending. Embark describes it as a “burst mobility gadget.”
Range information Exact range not stated by the cited sources. Officially changed from 20 m to 18 m in the October 8, 2026 notes.
Use cadence Preview reports no cooldown or use limit on midair redeployment during the session. Official notes say the changes “will no longer allow for immediate back-to-back uses.”
Published costs Power and durability figures not stated by the cited sources. Officially changed to 4% durability consumption per use and 60 power.

Embark explains the Snap Hook changes as adding more commitment while retaining multiple uses at full power. That explanation and the stated restriction on immediate back-to-back use apply to Snap Hook. They do not establish a Grappling Hook cooldown or cost. If you are checking a guide, patch note, or player discussion for numbers, confirm which gadget it names before applying the figure.

Practical ways to approach the gadget

The preview supports a few cautious, actionable expectations, but not a guaranteed movement recipe. Use the hook’s reported flexibility as a reason to test different routes, while leaving room for the rope and the landing to behave imperfectly.

  • For climbing: aim to assess the final ledge transition separately from the rope climb. The preview records a climb that reached the top without a successful ledge grab.
  • For rooftop movement: a swing can provide horizontal movement, but inspect the route for protruding geometry; one reported rope snag involved a balcony.
  • For descending: the preview lists descending tall buildings as an observed use. It does not specify a safe height, descent speed, or landing guarantee.
  • For chained movement: the preview reports another midair deployment without a cooldown or use limit. Treat that as something to verify in the current build rather than relying on unlimited chaining in a high-risk moment.
  • For enemy interactions: the preview includes flying ARC bots as an observed use but also reports sliding off the Emperor. Do not assume every enemy provides a stable attachment.

These are not official timing or aiming instructions: the cited material does not publish button prompts, controller mappings, a maximum attachment distance, or a list of valid surfaces. The useful distinction is between the movement the preview observed and the exact technical rules that Embark has not stated in the cited notes.

What the October 2026 information does—and does not—settle

As of October 13, 2026, the strongest available explanation of the Grappling Hook’s feel comes from PC Gamer’s preview session, while Embark’s October 8 Frozen Trail notes provide official patch details for Snap Hook. The launch announcement confirms the Grapple Hook’s inclusion in the live update. These sources establish that the new gadget exists and describe several observed uses, but they do not supply a full Grappling Hook stat sheet.

Specifically, the cited material leaves the Grappling Hook’s exact maximum range, power cost, durability consumption, and any other per-use cost unstated. It also does not define a complete list of attachment targets or geometry restrictions. Since gadget tuning can change, consult current official patch notes when relying on a precise mechanic; the numerical Snap Hook changes should not be presented as Grappling Hook specifications.
