If you mean Withermoore’s Soul Jar in Divinity: Original Sin 2, first verify that you destroyed the northwest jar marked “Here lies Withermoore the Supplicant.” The quest journal may remain open even after the jar is destroyed; a later interaction at the source gate in Braccus Rex’s tower has been suggested by players, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
Make sure this is the quest you mean
“Ghost in the Portrait” does not identify a quest by name in the available reference. The closest match is Withermoore’s Soul Jar, in the Fort Joy part of Divinity: Original Sin 2. If your game or quest is different, these steps may not apply.
Check the jar and objective
Find Withermoore’s jar
In the Ancient Passage, look for the northwest jar. Its plaque reads “Here lies Withermoore the Supplicant.” There are five similar-looking soul jars in the area, and choosing another can lead to traps or guardian fights. Use the plaque and location rather than appearance alone.
Resolve the jar interaction
The quest guide documents destroying Withermoore’s jar or returning it to him. Destroying it frees his soul; returning it is an alternative choice, not a troubleshooting step. The guide also describes refusing to return it and having another party member destroy it during dialogue, but that is another choice path—not a verified way to repair a stuck journal entry.

Reach the Ancient Passage if you have not
If you have not found the jar, the route begins with Withermoore in the Forgotten Cell. Remove the spear pinning him to begin the quest. The guide lists three ways to do this: a character with at least 12 Strength, at least 1 Telekinesis, or breaking the spear. Breaking it means you do not recover the weapon.
- Go to the statue or shrine in the Fort Joy courtyard and find the hatch beyond it, leading toward the prison route.
- Near the altar, use a character with enough Wits to reveal the lever that opens the hatch to the Ancient Passage.
- In the passage, locate the northwest jar with Withermoore’s name on its plaque.
The quest guide includes coordinates, but landmarks and the plaque are safer to follow than coordinates alone, which can be presented differently across platform interfaces.

If the journal stays open after you destroy it
An open entry does not, by itself, show that you chose the wrong jar or that the game is broken. Players in a Larian forum discussion reported that the entry remained open after destroying the jar, and replies disagreed about whether the quest was bugged or still had another step.
A Steam discussion suggests interacting with the source gate in Braccus Rex’s tower later in the game; players report that Withermoore may appear there and the quest may complete. Treat this as community guidance, not a guaranteed or officially confirmed fix.

When the quest still will not progress
The available sources do not establish whether this behavior is reproducible on current PC or console versions, or across later editions. An old Early Access bug thread records a historical player report, but it does not establish a present-day defect. No universal workaround is confirmed, so avoid assuming that restarting, reloading, changing party order, or using a platform-specific trick will fix it.
For a version-specific diagnosis, the useful details are your platform, game edition, game version, the journal objective shown, and whether the correct jar was destroyed or returned. Those details help distinguish a later quest step from a possible version-specific issue.
