Fix WordPress formatting by first identifying where the problem appears: an editor warning, a live-page layout defect, or both. For a block that says it contains “unexpected or invalid content,” copy the block, choose Attempt Block Recovery, and inspect the Resolve menu if the recovered result is not right. Keep custom markup in a Custom HTML block, keep readable code inside code-oriented elements, and investigate editor-style scope or theme/plugin conflicts before rewriting content.

The sequence below protects your original content, separates markup problems from CSS problems, and gives you a reversible way to find the component that changed the formatting.

Start by classifying the formatting problem

Do not change several settings at once. WordPress formatting failures fall into different categories, and each requires a different first move.

An invalid or unexpected block warning

If a block displays “This block contains unexpected or invalid content,” WordPress has detected that the saved markup no longer matches the markup the block expects. The documented causes include malformed HTML, unexpected inline formatting, and interference from a theme or plugin. WordPress.org explains that the error is usually displayed when the affected block contains content with a formatting problem (documentation updated June 22, 2026).

The editor looks wrong, but visitors see the correct page

This is normally a style-scope or editor-style loading issue rather than damaged post content. The block editor loads styles differently from the classic editor and scopes selectors so they apply inside the editor canvas. A rule that works on the public page can therefore appear missing, duplicated, or visually different while you edit.

The live page is wrong

If visitors see broken columns, unstyled buttons, unexpected spacing, or a mobile layout failure, inspect the block markup, front-end CSS, theme.json settings, and plugin output. Clear a cache only after correcting the underlying markup or CSS; otherwise you can make an old error look like a new one.

HTML or CSS is being displayed as text or removed

Code intended to be read and markup intended to render are different things. A paragraph block may reject unsupported inline styles, while a code snippet needs escaped angle brackets or a <code> or <pre> element. Intentional custom markup belongs in a Custom HTML block.

Use the safest recovery path for an invalid block

Preserve a copy before you edit. Select the affected block, open its options, and use the copy command so the original content can be restored if recovery changes the layout. Invalid-content errors are tied to the block’s current content, and WordPress exposes a copy option for this reason.

  1. Select the affected block. Confirm that the warning belongs to the block you intend to repair, not to a surrounding group, column, or reusable pattern.
  2. Choose Attempt Block Recovery. WordPress compares the current content with the block’s expected markup and rebuilds the block when it can. Review headings, links, images, lists, alignment, and spacing after recovery.
  3. Undo if the recovered result is wrong. Use the editor’s undo control immediately, or paste the copy you made into a new block so you can compare both versions.
  4. Open the three-dot block menu and choose Resolve. The available choices let you keep the recovered version, edit the HTML, or convert the content.
  5. Inspect before converting. Conversion is a content decision, not merely a way to dismiss the warning. Choose the option that preserves the content you actually need.

When Custom HTML is the right conversion

Convert to Custom HTML when the block contains deliberate markup that native block controls cannot represent: for example, a game-embed wrapper, a custom data attribute, or a carefully structured table. This preserves the markup as HTML, but it also means you take responsibility for valid nesting, accessibility attributes, and front-end CSS. Native block controls will no longer protect you from every structural mistake.

When Classic Block is the right conversion

Convert to a Classic Block when the content is legacy Classic Editor material or depends on the classic editing model. This can preserve old formatting behavior, but it gives up many block-native controls and can make future layout changes less precise. Use it for genuinely legacy content, not as a universal fix for malformed markup.

Inspect the block’s HTML instead of guessing

Use Edit as HTML when recovery does not produce the intended result. You are looking for a small set of concrete defects.

  • Unclosed tags: an opening element such as <strong>, <a>, or <div> has no matching close.
  • Duplicated or misplaced tags: a second wrapper was pasted inside an existing wrapper, or a closing tag appears before the element it closes.
  • Invalid nesting: block-level structures are nested where the block parser does not expect them, or list items, links, and paragraphs are placed in incompatible positions.
  • Unexpected inline CSS: a style attribute was pasted into a paragraph or another block that does not support that formatting.
  • Editor-generated markup mixed with hand-written markup: copied content may contain spans, classes, or wrappers that no longer match the block’s current schema.

Repair one structural issue at a time, then switch back to the visual editor and check the rendered result. If the HTML is long or contains several custom wrappers, keep the copied original in a separate draft or staging copy before simplifying it.

Put HTML, CSS, and code in the context WordPress expects

Displaying code for readers

If your post explains a snippet, the angle brackets must be treated as text. Use code-oriented elements such as <code> for an inline fragment and <pre> for a multi-line example. In the Classic Editor’s visual mode, angle brackets are encoded so readers see the code rather than having the browser interpret it. The HTML mode leaves markup interpretable by the browser. WordPress.org’s “Write code in your posts (Classic Editor)” documentation describes this distinction.

For example, a snippet that readers should read can be represented as:

&lt;section class=&quot;scoreboard&quot;&gt;High score&lt;/section&gt;

The escaped entities display as literal markup. If you instead want the section to render on the page, use a Custom HTML block and provide intentional, valid markup rather than escaped text.

Rendering custom markup

Use a Custom HTML block for markup that should become part of the page: embeds, custom wrappers, or elements with attributes that native blocks do not expose. Validate its opening and closing tags, then test the result on the front end. A Custom HTML block is not a safe place to paste an entire page, a second document structure, or arbitrary scripts without understanding the security and layout consequences.

Applying CSS

Keep CSS in the style system appropriate to the site instead of attaching unsupported style attributes to ordinary paragraph blocks. For block themes, theme.json is the recommended place for global styles and block-specific settings. Core block styles provide structural layout; adding duplicate rules in several locations can create conflicts that are difficult to diagnose.

Fix differences between the editor and the live page

The block editor does not simply display the public page inside the editing screen. Its styles are loaded and scoped differently, so an editor-only discrepancy can be real without indicating corrupted post content.

Understand selector scoping

The block editor rewrites or scopes selectors such as body so they apply inside .editor-styles-wrapper. A theme rule that targets the public document body may therefore need an editor equivalent. The WordPress Developer Resources Theme Support handbook notes that the block editor supports a theme’s editor styles but works differently from the classic editor.

Check theme support and editor-style loading

In a classic or hybrid theme, editor CSS is controlled by theme support and the editor-style registration. The relevant mechanisms are add_theme_support('editor-styles') and add_editor_style(). Confirm that the stylesheet is registered, points to the intended file, and contains selectors that work inside the editor wrapper.

In a block theme, review the theme’s theme.json settings and styles. Do not assume that a front-end stylesheet automatically supplies an identical editor experience. The Block Editor Handbook’s “Use styles and stylesheets” guidance explains how style loading and scope affect both contexts.

Use a controlled comparison

  1. Open the post in the editor and record the exact discrepancy: font, width, color, spacing, alignment, or missing structural style.
  2. Preview or open the public page at the same viewport width.
  3. Inspect whether the mismatch affects all blocks or only one block type.
  4. Compare the active theme’s editor stylesheet and theme.json rules with the front-end styles.
  5. Test the same content in a staging copy with a compatible default theme. If the editor becomes correct, the original theme’s support or selectors are implicated.

Do not “fix” an editor-only problem by adding random inline styles to every block. That can make the post look correct in one screen while creating a new front-end or responsive defect.

Repair front-end layout and theme.json conflicts

When the public page is broken, first determine whether the block structure or the style rules are responsible.

Check structural layout first

Inspect the block hierarchy: columns inside columns, groups with unexpected width constraints, nested buttons, and missing closing markup can all produce a layout that CSS cannot reliably repair. Use the block list view to locate the affected parent, then inspect that parent’s HTML or block settings.

Check core block styles and duplicate rules

Core block styles provide structural behavior such as spacing, alignment, and layout support. A theme or plugin that adds a second rule for the same block can override those defaults. Look for duplicate declarations affecting the block’s display mode, width, margin, padding, or flex/grid properties.

Review theme.json deliberately

For block themes, treat theme.json as the central place for global styles and block settings. Remove or revise overlapping declarations rather than layering another override in a page-specific field. After each change, reload the public page and check a narrow mobile viewport as well as desktop.

Find a theme or plugin conflict without damaging production

WordPress documentation identifies theme or plugin interference as a possible cause of block errors. The safest practical response is isolation on staging, a maintenance copy, or another controlled environment—not random deactivation on a busy live site.

  1. Record the symptom and current versions. Note the affected post, block type, browser, viewport, active theme, and active plugins.
  2. Create a staging or backup copy. Make sure you can restore the database and files before changing components.
  3. Update compatible components. Bring WordPress, the theme, and plugins to supported versions where your maintenance policy allows. Recheck the issue after each meaningful update.
  4. Deactivate plugins in a controlled test. Disable them temporarily, then reload the editor and the public page. If the problem disappears, re-enable plugins methodically rather than all at once.
  5. Switch to a compatible default theme for the test. If the problem disappears with the theme change, compare its editor support, selectors, and theme.json configuration with the original.
  6. Use a binary-search style sequence. Re-enable half of the plugins, test, and continue narrowing the set until one component or combination reproduces the defect.
  7. Return production only after verification. Apply the confirmed fix, clear relevant caches, and retest the original post at desktop and mobile widths.

This sequence is an operational way to isolate the documented conflict cause; it does not prove that every formatting error comes from a plugin or theme.

Choose the least disruptive fix

The right option depends on what must be preserved and where the failure appears.

Option Preserves best Use when Trade-off
Attempt Block Recovery Native block structure and controls The warning is isolated and the intended content is ordinary block content Recovery may alter malformed markup, so compare the result with your copied original
Resolve → Custom HTML Deliberate custom markup and attributes Custom HTML must remain intact or native blocks cannot represent it You assume responsibility for valid HTML, accessibility, and CSS
Resolve → Classic Block Legacy Classic Editor behavior The content was created for the classic editor or relies on its editing model Fewer block-native controls and less precise modern layout editing
Edit as HTML Existing block identity while you inspect it You suspect unclosed tags, invalid nesting, or unsupported inline styles Manual edits can create new parser errors if the structure is not checked
Theme/plugin isolation Production content and configuration history The editor or front end changes when components are disabled Requires staging, a maintenance window, and methodical retesting

Use recovery first because it is usually the least invasive. Convert only when the content’s editing model or custom markup makes that conversion the more faithful representation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Retest formatting across devices and caches

After the markup or configuration is corrected, test the exact paths readers use.

  • Open the post in the editor and confirm that no invalid-content warning remains.
  • Preview and open the public URL in a logged-out window.
  • Check desktop and narrow mobile widths, especially columns, buttons, galleries, tables, and embeds.
  • Test links, headings, lists, captions, and keyboard focus after changing wrappers or CSS.
  • Clear page, object, or CDN caches only after the underlying result is correct, then reload once more to confirm the cached version is not masking the fix.

If the editor is fixed but the front end is not, continue with front-end CSS and theme/plugin isolation. If the front end is fixed but the editor remains wrong, continue with editor-style scope and theme support rather than rewriting the post.

Common failure modes and their remedies

Recovery makes the block look different

Compare the recovered block with the copy you made. If the original contained custom wrappers or attributes, use Resolve and consider Custom HTML instead of accepting a structural change that removes them.

Pasting code turns it into a broken layout

You pasted renderable HTML into a visual paragraph or pasted unescaped code where it was meant to be displayed. Move readable snippets into <code> or <pre>; move intentional markup into Custom HTML.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A CSS override works on desktop but fails on mobile

The rule may be tied to a fixed width, a parent selector that changes at a breakpoint, or an editor-only selector. Inspect the parent block and test both viewport sizes before keeping the override.

The issue returns after a plugin is re-enabled

Keep the plugin disabled in staging while you confirm the conflict, then check for an update or a documented compatibility setting. If no safe correction exists, choose whether the plugin’s feature is worth the formatting risk and document the decision before changing production.

Clearing cache does nothing

Cache invalidation cannot repair malformed markup or an incorrect selector. Recheck the block structure, front-end CSS, editor styles, and theme.json first; clear caches only after those are correct.

A repeatable checklist for WordPress formatting repairs

  1. Classify the symptom as editor-only, front-end-only, or both.
  2. Copy the affected block before changing it.
  3. Try Attempt Block Recovery.
  4. Use Resolve only after reviewing the recovered content.
  5. Inspect HTML for unclosed tags, invalid nesting, duplicate wrappers, and unsupported inline CSS.
  6. Place readable code in code-oriented elements and renderable custom markup in Custom HTML.
  7. For editor-only differences, inspect editor styles, .editor-styles-wrapper, add_theme_support('editor-styles'), and add_editor_style().
  8. For front-end differences, inspect core block styles, theme.json, and duplicate CSS rules.
  9. Isolate plugins and themes on staging or a controlled maintenance copy.
  10. Retest the original post at desktop and mobile widths, then clear caches and verify again.

These steps keep a formatting repair reversible and show whether the defect belongs to content, style scope, or a component conflict instead of treating every warning as the same problem.
