A dedicated server is the exception that causes most confusion: its GUI and sandbox_config.sbc show the effective order from top to bottom. Put the definition you want to win higher in that dedicated-server list, restart, and verify the result in the log and in-game.

The rule that decides which mod wins
Space Engineers resolves many mod conflicts through definition IDs. A mod can add a definition, change one supplied by another mod, or replace a complete file. When two active mods touch the same definition, the later effective entry takes precedence. The difficult part is that the place you read the list changes the apparent direction of loading.

That reversal is why a collection can appear to work in a local game but behave differently on a dedicated server. The dedicated-server view is not merely a cosmetic sort: it presents the order the server uses when applying definitions. Keen Software House describes it this way: “The mod order is flipped for the dedicated server GUI and the save files (sandbox_config.sbc), which show the mods in the real load order from top to bottom.”
How to place two conflicting mods
Choose the intended winner first
Do not start by moving entries at random. Decide which feature should be authoritative: a weapon balance change, a block definition, an economy setting, an encounter configuration, or another shared definition. The mod supplying that desired behavior is the one that must have precedence.

Use the correct direction for your interface
- In a local or in-game mod list, place the preferred mod above the competing mod. Because the list loads bottom to top, the preferred mod is applied later and wins.
- In the dedicated-server GUI, place the preferred mod higher in the displayed list. The top-to-bottom display is the server’s effective precedence order.
- If you edit
sandbox_config.sbcdirectly, use the same top-to-bottom interpretation as the dedicated-server GUI. Keep a copy of the original file before saving changes. - Restart the server or reload the world after changing the list. A running session may still contain definitions loaded under the old order.
- Test the specific block, weapon, script, or setting affected by the conflict rather than relying only on a successful startup.
A useful written record has three columns: the mod name, its position in the interface you are using, and the definition or feature it is intended to control. This prevents a later edit from silently undoing a deliberate precedence decision.
A safe dedicated-server workflow
Load-order changes can alter a save as well as a server launch. Treat them like configuration changes with a rollback plan.

- Export or record the active list. Save the exact names and current positions before touching anything. Include required items that the game inserted automatically.
- Back up the world. Copy the save and preserve the existing configuration. A backup is essential before changing a large collection or removing a mod that has placed blocks or entities in the world.
- Identify dependencies. Let the game add required items where applicable, then inspect where those items actually appear. Do not assume a dependency will sit immediately next to the mod that requested it.
- Identify the collision. Compare the two mods’ stated functions and the first relevant error in the server log. A visible symptom can come from a shared definition even when the mods appear unrelated to a player.
- Change one variable. Move only the mod that should win, or remove only one suspect mod for an isolation test. Changing several positions at once makes the result impossible to attribute.
- Restart and verify. Check the launch log for download, parsing, and definition errors, then reproduce the in-game behavior. Record the result beside the new list.
- Roll back quickly if needed. Stop the server, restore the saved configuration or world copy, and retain the failing log. A rollback is safer than repeatedly editing a damaged save.
Dependencies: why automatic additions can still cause conflicts
Required items are normally added automatically. That solves the download requirement, not every precedence problem. Official guidance warns that a dependency may load after the mod that requested it. This is usually harmless when the requesting mod merely references definitions supplied by the dependency. It becomes significant when the requesting mod also tries to override one of those definitions.
When dependency order is harmless
If a mod calls a block, component, or definition that the dependency provides without replacing it, the dependency’s later position generally does not change the intended behavior. The important check is that the dependency downloaded correctly and is present in the active list.

When dependency order becomes an edge case
If both the dependency and the requesting mod edit the same definition, whichever entry has effective precedence can erase part of the other change. Move the mod that contains the desired final definition above its competitor in the relevant interface, then test. If no arrangement produces the expected result, the conflict may involve a full-file replacement or incompatible assumptions rather than simple ordering.
Signs that the dependency itself failed
- A required item is missing from the active list after a restart.
- The server reports a download, parse, or definition error before the world finishes loading.
- A feature that worked before the dependency was added becomes inactive without any other list change.
- The save develops missing blocks, holes, or a failure to load.
Recheck download integrity before drawing conclusions from an ordering experiment. A broken or incomplete download cannot be repaired by moving its entry.

Precedence only helps when both mods expose compatible, separately overrideable definitions. Three common cases require a different diagnosis.
Failed or incomplete download
The server may retain the entry while lacking the files needed to apply it. Inspect the launch log for download or extraction errors, repair the installation through the host’s normal Workshop or mod.io management process, and restart before testing order again.

Full-file replacement
Some changes replace an entire definition file rather than merging individual definitions. The later file can discard unrelated settings from the earlier mod. If moving entries causes one feature to appear while another disappears, you may be seeing a full-file collision. Only a compatible patch or a collection designed to work together can resolve that; there is no universal position that preserves both files.
Conflict outside simple definition order
Scripts, plugins, world state, and version incompatibilities can produce the same symptom. Isolate the two suspected mods in a copy of the world, then add the rest of the collection back in small groups. Keep the failing launch log so the first error is not buried under later warnings.
Reading logs and testing without damaging a save
Use a repeatable test world or a duplicated save when the disputed mod changes blocks, entities, inventories, or progression. Record the old list, the one position changed, the server restart time, and the exact behavior observed. Test both creation and loading: a mod may allow an existing world to start while preventing a newly placed block from functioning, or it may fail only when the save is reopened.
Prioritize the earliest meaningful error in the log. A later cascade of missing definitions can be a consequence rather than a second independent problem. If the world will not load after an edit, stop making further changes, restore the backup, and test the collection in a copy.

Steam Workshop, mod.io, consoles, and crossplay
Platform support affects whether a load-order fix is even possible. Steam Workshop is primarily aimed at PC users, while mod.io supports multiple platforms. Console hosts cannot execute user code locally, so script-heavy mods have platform limits. In supported crossplay configurations, a PC dedicated server can provide server-side scripts to console clients; an SBC-only mod remains the safer choice when the same collection must work across platforms.

These constraints should be checked before building the order. A list that is technically correct on a PC client can still fail for console players because the mod cannot run on their platform.

Torch supplies administration and plugin features around the dedicated server. It does not replace the game’s own definition precedence. Continue to read the game’s effective mod order from the dedicated-server GUI or sandbox_config.sbc when deciding which world definition wins.
Keep administration features and world mods conceptually separate during troubleshooting. First reproduce the issue with the game’s active world-mod list. Then test whether the administration layer introduces an additional error, command, or compatibility problem.

Plugins are a separate security decision
A plugin is not equivalent to an ordinary world mod. Keen Software House’s current policy says: “Plugins are not permitted on the Steam Workshop or Mod.io and will be removed if posted.” The company also warns that plugins can affect systems outside the game and are used at the user’s own risk. Install and evaluate plugins separately from a normal load-order change, and do not treat a plugin conflict as something that can necessarily be fixed by moving entries in the world-mod list.

Building a reproducible mod collection
There is no universal best order for every collection. The correct sequence depends on the definitions and dependencies in that specific set. A reproducible collection therefore needs more than a screenshot of a server panel.
- Keep a dated text copy of the active list in effective precedence order.
- Record which mod is intended to win each known collision.
- Note automatically added dependencies and their observed positions.
- Store a world backup with the configuration used to create it.
- Test updates one at a time rather than updating the entire collection before a restart.
- Retain the log from any failed launch alongside the list that caused it.
When comparing two collections or hosting approaches, evaluate effective precedence, dependency depth and override risk, PC-only versus crossplay compatibility, download reproducibility, backup and rollback procedures, and whether administration is native or supplied by Torch or another third-party layer.
Quick decision checklist
- Are you reading an in-game list or a dedicated-server list?
- For a dedicated server, did you read the GUI or
sandbox_config.sbcfrom top to bottom? - Which exact definition or feature should win?
- Are both mods downloaded completely and compatible with the server version?
- Did the game add a dependency, and does that dependency also edit the same definition?
- Did you back up the world and record the old list?
- Did you change one position, restart, inspect the log, and test the affected behavior?
- Could a full-file replacement, script, plugin, or platform limitation explain the result?
If the answer to these checks is clear, the apparent “backwards” order is no longer mysterious: use the interface’s effective direction, make the intended winner higher in that order, and isolate anything that ordering alone cannot resolve.
