Then check access, compatibility, service status, the download queue and available storage before trying a scenario-specific fix. If an error code appears, record it exactly; the right next step depends on the code and console.
Start by identifying what is stuck
Note the console model—Xbox One, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S—and whether the game is a disc or digital purchase. Also distinguish a new installation from an update, and write down the exact status message or error code. “Installation Stopped” describes a symptom; by itself, it does not identify the cause.
These distinctions matter: the documented offline-disc procedure below is specifically for a stuck Xbox One disc installation, not a general fix for digital downloads, updates or every Xbox generation.
Check that you can access the game
Make sure the console is signed in to an account that owns the game or otherwise has access to it. If an owned title is missing from the installed-games list on Xbox One, check My games & apps > Ready to install. Microsoft also cautions that some apps and games are limited to particular device types, so verify that the game version supports your console. For console installation problems, Microsoft directs players to Xbox Support.

Check service, connection, queue and storage
- Service and connection: Check the current Xbox service status and use the console’s network test. If a service issue is reported, follow Xbox’s current guidance rather than treating the install as a local console fault.
- Queue: Inspect the active download or update queue. If the console offers pause and resume for the item, you can try those controls; labels and options may differ by console and software version.
- Available space: Check free storage on the drive where the game is being installed. Low space is one possible obstacle, but verify it before treating it as the cause.
If space is genuinely the constraint, added storage can help manage the library—but the type of drive matters. TechRadar’s 2026 Xbox Series X storage guide distinguishes expansion cards, including the Seagate Xbox Storage Expansion Card and WD Black C50, from standard USB external drives. Expansion cards can run Series X|S games directly. A standard USB drive can store games and help free internal space, but cannot directly run Series X|S-optimized games; you may need to move a title back to internal storage or an expansion card to play it. Some Xbox One and backward-compatible titles can run from a USB drive.
Try a normal restart and check for a system update
A normal console restart is a reasonable low-risk check. You can also look for an available console system update using the current instructions for your model on Xbox Support. Menu paths and labels can change, and a system update is not a guaranteed remedy for a stuck game install or update. Do not jump to a factory reset based only on a stalled queue.

For a stuck Xbox One disc installation
Bethesda Support documents a separate procedure for a game installing from disc on Xbox One. Keep it to that scenario; it is not established as a fix for digital installs, updates or current Series X|S problems.
- On Xbox One, open the console’s Settings and clear Persistent Storage.
- Fully shut down the console, unplug it from power, then disconnect it from the internet.
- Try installing the game from the disc while offline.
- If the installation remains stuck, reconnect to the internet and continue the installation through Marketplace or the game’s Game Details, following the console’s available options.

Use the exact error code to choose the next step
If the checks do not resolve the problem, search Xbox Support using the exact error code and your console model. Microsoft directs players with console installation issues to Xbox Support, but the guidance available here does not establish a universal code-by-code repair sequence. If the failure affects only one game, check that game’s publisher support as well. When contacting support, include the console model, whether the copy is disc or digital, whether this is an install or update, and the exact status or error text.
