Gears of War: E-Day is set fourteen years before the original Gears of War, at the start of the Locust War. Its campaign follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago through the invasion’s first three days in the city of Kalona. The broad story order is E-Day, Judgment, the original trilogy, then Gears 4 and Gears 5.
What is Emergence Day?
Emergence Day, usually shortened to E-Day, is the moment the Locust erupt from beneath Sera and launch a war against humanity. The planet’s people have only just emerged from the Pendulum Wars, a conflict that lasted almost eighty years. Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago are veterans recently returned from that fighting when the Locust invasion begins. Xbox Wire’s 2026 interview describes the setting and the game’s place in the series.
The official material establishes E-Day’s position relative to other games, not an exact date on Sera’s calendar. It is best understood as the start of the Locust War rather than pinned to an unsupported year or day.
Where does Gears of War: E-Day fit?
E-Day takes place fourteen years before the original Gears of War. Rather than survey the whole planet, its campaign stays with Marcus and Dom in Kalona during the invasion’s first three days. The Coalition says the narrative remains with Bravo Squad: Creative Director Matt Searcy explained, “We never leave Bravo Squad for the entire game. The entire story is told from their perspective. Even though there’s an event going on all over the world, we never jump anywhere else. You only see what they see and learn what they learn.”

Kalona is meant to feel like a real place being destroyed, not just a backdrop. Art Director Aryan Hanbeck said, “We wanted Kalona to feel like another character in the story.” Brand Director Nicole Fawcette added, “Literally everything you see in E-Day did not exist before we made it for this game.” These are descriptions of the game’s design, not additional claims about the wider series chronology.
The Gears of War story in timeline order
This is a practical guide to the main games, not a scene-by-scene chronology of every novel, comic, flashback or expansion. The official summaries place E-Day before the original and Judgment in the immediate aftermath; the later entries follow the numbered series sequence.

- Gears 5: Kait takes the lead, investigating her connection to that enemy and the threat it poses to Sera. The franchise’s official game listings outline the later-generation story.
Should you play in story order or release order?
Choose based on what you want from the first game. Story order begins with the outbreak; release order introduces the series as players first encountered it, with Sera already devastated. The official Gears game page describes Gears of War: Reloaded as a modernized remaster of the original campaign.

For a first playthrough, release order is a sensible choice if you want the original games’ reveals as they were introduced. A returning player who already knows the central story can instead begin with E-Day to revisit the outbreak’s origins.

What the games establish about the expanded lore
The Coalition says novelist Karen Traviss collaborated and consulted on E-Day. Its interview notes that the developers drew on the novels, particularly Aspho Fields, for Carlos’s backstory and Dom’s family life. That establishes influence on character material; it does not, by itself, define a complete canon hierarchy for every novel, comic or game scene.

As of the official updates published in 2026, Gears of War: E-Day is scheduled to launch on October 6, 2026. The franchise update also identifies November 7, 2026, as the series’ twentieth-anniversary date. These are time-sensitive release details, so consult the Xbox Wire update and the official Gears site for current information.
