The Minecraft Bedrock message “You need to authenticate to Microsoft services” means the game cannot verify the Microsoft account needed for the online action you tried, such as joining a Realm or another player’s world. The reports available do not establish one cause or a guaranteed fix. Try the checks below in order, retrying after each.
1. Check your Microsoft account session
Make sure Minecraft is signed into the Microsoft account you intend to use for online play. If the game provides a sign-out option, sign out and sign back in, then try joining again. A third-party tutorial recommends this as a troubleshooting step; it is not an official diagnosis or a proven fix for every platform. TechFixIT’s tutorial also suggests checking connectivity, service availability, and game updates.
2. Synchronize your device’s date and time
Set the device to update its date, time, and time zone automatically, then restart Minecraft and retry. Individual community reports describe time synchronization helping, including a Nintendo Switch player unable to join Realms. Those reports are anecdotal: they make this a useful check, not an established general cause. One report and the Switch/Realms discussion describe such cases.
3. Check the game, network, and service availability
- Update Minecraft: Install any available game update for your platform, then reopen the game.
- Check connectivity: Confirm the device is online and can reach the services required for multiplayer. If possible, retry after reconnecting to the network.
- Check for a service issue: If the account appears signed in but online play still fails, check current official Minecraft or Xbox service information before changing account settings.
These are possible areas to investigate, not confirmed causes. The third-party tutorial names outdated software, connectivity, and service problems, but provides no measured success rate.

4. Review permissions for a child or family account
If the Microsoft account is managed by a parent or family organizer, ask that organizer to review the account’s online-play permissions using current official Microsoft or Xbox guidance. Community discussion raises account permissions as a possible factor, but the exact setting to change is not established by the sources available. Do not alter security protections or guess at settings; use current official guidance for the account and platform.
5. Gather details if the error remains
Before contacting official Minecraft or Xbox support, record the details that can help distinguish an account issue from a platform or multiplayer-specific problem:
Rank #2
- Your platform and Minecraft version.
- Whether one account or multiple accounts on the device encounter the message.
- Whether it happens when joining a Realm, a public server, or a world hosted by another player.
- Which checks you tried and whether anything changed.
Use current official Minecraft or Xbox support channels for escalation. Community posts and a third-party tutorial offer candidate checks, but they cannot establish the root cause, how common each cause is, or which step works best on a particular platform. A Bedrock discussion also raises account permissions, without confirming a universal remedy.

Do not disable account security, use unofficial authentication tools, or configure a server to accept unauthenticated players as a workaround. The available sources do not support these as safe or appropriate fixes for a player encountering this message. No evidence here supports buying hardware, accessories, or physical game products to resolve an authentication problem.
