If Zelda progress is missing, first select the Switch user who played the game, then check the game’s cloud-save support and compare the console and cloud timestamps before restoring anything. A cloud download replaces the console save for that game, and Nintendo says the overwritten copy cannot be recovered.
Why Zelda save data may be missing
Switch save data belongs to the user profile that created it; it is not shared between users. Choose the profile that originally played the Zelda game before checking its local save or cloud backup. Nintendo’s guidance also requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and support for Save Data Cloud in the specific game. Nintendo’s save-data backup guidance explains the service requirements.
Cloud backup is not the same as a local copy. Nintendo says local save-data backups are not currently supported on Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2. Its Nintendo Switch Online Service FAQ states: “Local save data backups are not currently supported on Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch.”
If a Nintendo Switch Online membership expires, cloud backups are inaccessible until membership resumes. Nintendo says previous backups can be accessed again if you resubscribe within 180 days of expiration. Membership is a prerequisite for cloud access, not a way to recreate a backup that was never made.

Check whether your Zelda game and edition support cloud saves
Do not assume every Zelda title or edition has identical support. Check the exact game installed on your console:
- On the HOME Menu, highlight the game.
- Press + or − to open its software menu.
- Select Save Data Cloud. Nintendo says the menu identifies software that does not support the feature.
You can also check the game’s Software Details in Nintendo eShop or its Nintendo product information. For the Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Editions, Nintendo’s Switch 2 transfer guidance confirms Save Data Cloud support and says saves from the original Switch versions can be carried over to those editions. Check the specific edition rather than applying that information to every release.

Compare save timestamps before restoring
The safest next step is to see which copy is newer. Nintendo displays the cloud-backup and console-save timestamps in the cloud-save menu.
- Open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud.
- Select the user who played the game.
- Select the Zelda game and compare the console and cloud timestamps.
If the console save is newer, choose Back Up Save Data to upload it. If the cloud save is newer and contains the progress you want, download that copy. Nintendo’s save-data instructions describe the available actions and timestamp display.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Restore a Zelda cloud save without overwriting the wrong progress
Warning: Downloading a cloud save replaces the existing console save for that game. Nintendo says overwritten save data cannot be recovered. Compare timestamps and decide which copy to keep before confirming a download or upload; either action can replace the other version.
- From the game icon’s software menu, select Save Data Cloud, choose the correct user, then select Download Save Data; or open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud, select that user and backup, then choose Download Save Data.
- Check that the cloud timestamp is newer than the console timestamp and that it represents the progress you intend to restore.
- Confirm the download only if you accept that it will replace the current console save.
If Nintendo reports that the cloud backup is older than the console save, it may be because play began on the console before the latest cloud copy was downloaded. Compare the timestamps and choose the version to keep. Upload the console copy if it has the progress you want, or download the cloud copy if that is the correct one. The overwrite cannot be undone.

Why a Switch save did not upload
Work through these checks before trying another upload:
- Confirm the console is connected to the internet and has current system software.
- Make sure the Nintendo Account has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Confirm that the exact Zelda game and edition supports Save Data Cloud.
- Close the game. Nintendo says save data cannot be backed up while software is open or in use.
- Check the per-user automatic-backup setting and whether a backup for another game is already in progress.
- Check Nintendo Network Status for maintenance or service interruptions.
Nintendo’s backup troubleshooting guidance covers software-in-use and backup-progress conditions. If the console says the cloud copy is older than the local save, treat that as a version choice—not proof that the upload is safe to ignore. Preserve the copy with the progress you want before replacing either one.

Automatic backup and automatic download are different
For compatible software, automatic backup is enabled by default when a Nintendo Switch Online membership starts, but settings can be changed for each user and game. Automatic download is a separate option, and Nintendo says it must be enabled on each console where it should apply.
- Open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud.
- Select the user, then open Settings.
- Enable Automatic Save-Data Download if you want cloud saves downloaded automatically on that console.
Nintendo says a newer cloud save can download while the console is in Sleep Mode. Leave the console asleep until the download completes. See Nintendo’s cloud-save settings instructions for details.
Using Zelda saves on another Switch or Switch 2
For compatible Nintendo Switch software, Nintendo says cloud saves can be shared between Switch and Switch 2 using the same Nintendo Account. The Switch 2 Editions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom support Save Data Cloud, and Nintendo says original Switch-version saves can be carried over to those editions. Nintendo also notes that Switch 2-specific features or content may not be available if a Switch 2 Edition save is used on a Switch console. Check the title and edition before moving between systems.
If you want to move one save directly between two consoles rather than use cloud backup, use System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data and the same Nintendo Account. Nintendo’s transfer guidance says the save is deleted from the original console after transfer. This is a move, not a second backup.
