You cannot force every PC game to use DirectX 12. The game must include a Direct3D 12 renderer and recognize a specific in-game setting, launch argument, configuration value, or executable. There is no universal Windows switch: -dx12, -d3d12, and similar commands work only when that particular game supports them.
The safest order is to use the game’s built-in renderer setting first, then its officially documented launcher argument, verify that DX12 is active, and remove the argument if the game becomes unstable.

Before forcing DX12
First identify the exact game, launcher, and current game version. Confirm through the developer’s documentation or system requirements that the title actually supports DirectX 12. If it only includes DirectX 11, Vulkan, or another renderer, no launch option can add a DX12 mode.
Update Windows and your GPU driver, then restart the PC. On a laptop, ensure the game uses the dedicated or high-performance GPU rather than integrated graphics. Temporarily disable outdated mods, ReShade or other injectors, and aggressive overlays while troubleshooting.

For a hardware and driver check, press Windows + R, enter dxdiag, and press Enter. Review the System and Display tabs, or select Save All Information to export a report for support. DxDiag reports system capability and driver information; it does not prove which renderer a particular game used.
Microsoft explains that Direct3D 12 hardware support is expressed through feature levels and that D3D12 hardware supports at least feature level 11_0. A feature level is not the same as an API version or a performance guarantee. See Microsoft’s feature-level documentation.
Use the game’s built-in option first
- Open the game.
- Go to Settings, Options, or Graphics.
- Look for Rendering API, Graphics API, DirectX version, Renderer, or a DX11/DX12 selector.
- Select DirectX 12, apply the change, and restart if requested.
This is normally more reliable than guessing a command because the game itself knows which renderer and configuration format its current build supports. If a startup dialog offers a renderer choice, select DX12 there rather than adding a second, potentially conflicting argument.

- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Stay on the General tab.
- Find Launch Options.
- Enter the launch argument documented for that game, then close the window.
- Start the game normally from Steam.
Steam’s support documentation lists -dxlevel [level] for supported titles, particularly Valve and Source-based games. That does not make -dxlevel 120, -dx12, or -d3d12 universal Steam commands. Launch options are parsed by the game or its engine, not by Steam or Windows. See Steam’s launch-options guidance.

How to force DX12 in Epic Games Launcher
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Click your profile icon in the upper-right corner and select Settings.
- Scroll down and expand the relevant game.
- Enable Additional Command Line Arguments.
- Enter the command supported by that game and relaunch it.
For Fortnite, Epic documents -d3d12 -sm6 as a DX12 rendering-mode command and -d3d11 for switching back to DX11. These are Fortnite-specific documented examples, not commands for every Epic Games Store title. Follow Epic’s rendering-mode instructions.
Common commands are not universal
| Command | Qualification |
|---|---|
-dx12 |
Used by some games, but only when the title recognizes it. |
-d3d12 |
Used by some games and engines; not a Windows-wide switch. |
-force-d3d12 |
Game-specific and must be confirmed in that title’s documentation. |
-dxlevel 120 |
Relevant to engines that support Valve/Source-style -dxlevel; not a general DX12 command. |
-d3d12 -sm6 |
Official Fortnite example documented by Epic; do not generalize it to other games. |
Do not stack every possible flag. Enter one documented option at a time. Combining -dx12 -d3d12 -force-d3d12 makes failures harder to diagnose and may create conflicts.
Other launchers, shortcuts, and configuration files
Xbox app and Microsoft Store games may provide only an in-game renderer selector. EA app, Ubisoft Connect, Rockstar Games Launcher, Battle.net, and other publisher launchers may have their own command-line fields—or none at all. Check the game’s current support documentation rather than assuming the Steam or Epic path applies.

Some games store renderer choices in .ini, .cfg, or profile files. Back up the file first and edit it only when official documentation identifies the correct setting. Do not replace DLLs, use unofficial wrappers, or patch executables for protected multiplayer games.
How to verify that DX12 is active
A successful launch is not enough. Some games silently fall back to DX11 after a failed DX12 initialization.
- Check the game’s graphics menu after restarting for a DX12 or D3D12 label.
- Inspect the game’s log files for
D3D12,Direct3D 12, or renderer-initialization entries. - Use the built-in benchmark or telemetry screen if available.
- Check whether a DX12-only feature becomes available.
- Use a trusted diagnostic overlay that identifies the active graphics API, where appropriate.
DxDiag can confirm that Windows, the driver, and the GPU expose relevant capability, but it does not identify the renderer selected by each game.

DX12 is not automatically faster. It may reduce CPU-side overhead in a well-optimized engine, but performance depends on the game, workload, GPU, CPU, driver, graphics settings, and shader-compilation behavior. It can also increase VRAM use, expose driver bugs, or produce worse minimum frame rates.

Compare the same save or benchmark scene for several minutes. Record average frame rate, frame-time consistency, crashes, visual errors, and shader-compilation stutter. Do not judge performance only during the first seconds after enabling DX12 or updating a driver: shaders may still be compiling. Epic specifically documents shader recompilation as a cause of initial Fortnite DX12 stutter; the same pattern can occur in other engines, but the exact behavior is game-specific.
If DX12 crashes or shows a black screen
- Remove the launch argument from Steam or Epic and try launching normally.
- Restore the backed-up graphics configuration.
- Use the game’s documented safe mode or reset-settings option.
- Verify the game files through the storefront.
- Disable mods, overlays, capture tools, and graphics injectors.
- Update or clean-install the GPU driver if the problem began after a driver change.
For supported Steam games, Steam documents -safe for minimal video settings and -autoconfig for restoring detected defaults. These options are not universal either; use them only where the game supports them. See Steam’s troubleshooting launch-option guidance.
For a black screen, briefly allow first-run shader compilation, then try Alt + Enter to switch display mode. If necessary, reset the game’s graphics settings, test borderless windowed mode, disable HDR or ray tracing, and confirm that a laptop is using the intended GPU. Never download “DirectX DLL packs” or delete arbitrary files from System32.

Why a DX12-capable PC may still fail
Basic D3D12 support does not guarantee that a game will run. The title may require a higher feature level, Shader Model support, ray tracing, mesh shaders, sufficient VRAM, a particular driver, or a specific Windows version. Optional features associated with DirectX 12 Ultimate are not prerequisites for ordinary DX12, but a game may require them for particular graphics modes.

The DirectX 12 Agility SDK is primarily a developer technology that lets games ship newer D3D12 components. It is not a general-purpose player utility for converting a DX11 game to DX12, so installing developer SDK packages is not a normal troubleshooting step. See Microsoft’s Agility SDK announcement.
How to switch back to DX11
Remove the DX12 argument from the launcher’s launch-options field and start the game normally. If the game has an in-game selector, choose DX11 and restart. For Fortnite, Epic documents -d3d11 as the DX11 command. If the game remains unlaunchable, reset its graphics configuration or use its documented safe mode, then remove the command again after recovery.
When DX12 launches but causes persistent crashes, severe stutter, worse frame times, or broken overlays, DX11 may be the better renderer for that particular game and system.
