Yes—but formatting it for Windows will erase the Xbox-specific Games & Apps layout. Back up anything important, identify the correct external disk in Windows Disk Management, and format it as NTFS for Windows-only use or exFAT when broader device compatibility is more important.
Short answer
Yes. An Xbox One external hard drive can usually be reused with a Windows PC, but you must replace the Xbox Games & Apps partition layout with a Windows-compatible file system. The normal process is destructive: back up anything important, identify the correct disk in Disk Management, then format it as NTFS for mainly-Windows use or exFAT for compatibility with other devices.
Do not format the drive if you still need its Xbox games, apps, captures, or Xbox storage setup. Formatting removes the Xbox-specific layout. You can use the drive with Xbox One again later, but the console will need to format it for Games & Apps again.
Important: Formatting destroys data on the selected partition. Check the disk’s capacity and connection carefully before confirming any format operation.

Before you begin
- Back up required files. Copy anything you need to another drive or cloud location. Treat Xbox games and apps stored on the drive as disposable unless you are prepared to reinstall or redownload them.
- Use a direct USB connection. Connect the drive directly to the PC instead of through an unpowered hub while diagnosing or formatting it.
- Know which drive you are changing. Do not rely only on a drive letter. Compare the external drive’s approximate capacity with the disk shown in Disk Management.
- Expect the Xbox layout to disappear. A Windows format is not a way to make one partition work interchangeably with Xbox Games & Apps and Windows.
Xbox One Games & Apps storage was documented as requiring a USB 3.0 external hard drive with at least 256 GB of capacity. Those requirements describe the console’s storage use—not a requirement for ordinary Windows storage. If you need another drive for Xbox storage while converting this one for the PC, look for a USB 3.0 external hard drive and verify the current Xbox compatibility requirements before buying. A 1 TB or larger drive is a practical capacity for many game libraries, but 256 GB is the conservative documented minimum, not a universal recommendation for every buyer. Microsoft’s Xbox storage announcement describes the original Xbox One external-storage requirements.
Format the Xbox One drive in Windows Disk Management
1. Connect the drive
Plug the external hard drive into the Windows PC using its normal USB cable. If it is a desktop-size external HDD with a separate power adapter, connect that power supply. Wait a few seconds for Windows to detect it.
2. Open Disk Management
Use either of these Windows 10 or Windows 11 paths:
- Right-click the Start button and choose Disk Management.
- Search for Create and format hard disk partitions and open the matching result.
Disk Management can show disks that do not appear normally in File Explorer, including disks with no drive letter, disks that are offline, and disks whose partitions Windows cannot mount. Microsoft’s Disk Management documentation covers creating and formatting volumes, assigning drive letters, bringing disks online, and managing unallocated space.

3. Identify the Xbox drive carefully
Look at the lower section of the Disk Management window, where disks are listed as Disk 0, Disk 1, and so on. Use all available clues:
- Compare the listed capacity with the physical Xbox drive.
- Confirm that it is marked as an external disk rather than your internal Windows disk.
- Check whether it has an unfamiliar Xbox partition, no usable drive letter, or unallocated space.
- If more than one external drive is connected, disconnect the others temporarily to reduce the chance of selecting the wrong disk.
If you cannot identify the disk with confidence, stop. Selecting a volume on the wrong disk can destroy unrelated Windows files.
4. Format an existing volume
If the intended Xbox drive shows a volume that can be selected, use this process:

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Right-click the intended volume or partition.
- Choose Format.
- Enter a recognizable Volume label, such as
PC Drive. - Choose NTFS or exFAT as the file system.
- Leave Allocation unit size at Default unless you have a specific storage-management reason to change it.
- Choose whether to perform a quick format, read the warning, and confirm only after checking the disk again.
When the operation finishes, the volume should receive a drive letter and become available in File Explorer. If it does not, right-click the volume in Disk Management, choose Change Drive Letter and Paths, and assign an unused letter.
5. Create a volume when the disk is unallocated
If the intended drive shows a black bar labeled Unallocated, formatting the nonexistent volume is not enough. Create a new Windows volume:
- Right-click the unallocated region.
- Choose New Simple Volume.
- Follow the wizard and accept the maximum volume size unless you deliberately want multiple partitions.
- Assign a drive letter.
- Choose NTFS or exFAT.
- Give the volume a label and leave the allocation-unit size at its default.
- Finish the wizard.
The Xbox partition structure will be replaced by the new Windows volume. Microsoft warns that formatting destroys data on the selected partition; a quick format is not a secure erase. It creates a new file table without fully overwriting the volume.
Formatted the wrong drive? Stop using it immediately and disconnect it. Continued writing can overwrite data that might otherwise be recoverable. Do not install recovery software on the affected drive or save recovered files back to it. Use another computer or storage device, and consider formatted-drive recovery software or a professional external-drive data-recovery service if the files are important. Recovery is not guaranteed, especially if the drive has been used after formatting or has physical damage.
Should you choose NTFS or exFAT?
| Choose | When it makes sense | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| NTFS | The drive will mainly stay with Windows PCs and you want the standard Windows file system. | Compatibility with non-Windows devices varies. |
| exFAT | You expect to move the drive among Windows PCs and other devices that support exFAT, especially when large files are involved. | Device support is not universal, and exFAT does not preserve Xbox Games & Apps functionality. |
NTFS: the best default for a Windows-only drive
Choose NTFS if the drive will primarily store PC games, documents, backups, or other files on Windows computers. NTFS supports Windows-oriented features such as permissions, encryption, quotas, and transaction-based recovery capabilities. It is generally the least surprising choice for a drive dedicated to Windows.

Choose exFAT when broader device compatibility matters more than Windows-specific features. It is designed for large storage devices and large files, but every device must support exFAT; a television, game console, camera, media player, or older computer may not.

Neither NTFS nor exFAT turns the drive into a shared Xbox-and-PC Games & Apps disk. Reformatting is a choice to repurpose the drive for Windows or other compatible devices. If you later want Xbox One Games & Apps storage, the console must set up the drive again.
Optional command-line method
Advanced users can format a confirmed volume from Command Prompt with Windows’ format command:
format X: /FS:NTFS /V:PC_DRIVE /Q
Replace X: only after verifying the correct drive letter. The /FS: parameter selects the file system, /V: supplies a volume label, and /Q requests a quick format. To use exFAT, the pattern would be:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
format X: /FS:exFAT /V:PC_DRIVE /Q
This method is easy to misuse because a wrong drive letter can format an unrelated volume. Disk Management is safer for most readers. A quick format should also never be described as secure erasure.
If the drive does not appear in File Explorer
File Explorer is not the only place to check. Open Disk Management and look for the drive in the lower pane. It may be detected but:
- has no drive letter;
- is marked Offline;
- contains unallocated space;
- has a partition layout Windows cannot mount; or
- needs a new volume before it can be used.
Assign a drive letter when appropriate, bring an offline disk online only after confirming it is the correct disk, or create a New Simple Volume from unallocated space. Do not initialize or format the drive merely because Windows displays an unfamiliar layout if you still need the data on it.

If the drive does not appear in Disk Management
Work through these checks before assuming that the Xbox format is the problem:
- Disconnect and reconnect the drive while Windows is running.
- Try a different USB port, preferably a port directly on the computer.
- Try a replacement cable that matches the enclosure’s connector and USB requirements.
- Check the external power adapter if the drive uses one.
- Remove USB hubs and docking stations during diagnosis.
- Test the drive on another computer if one is available.
- Open Device Manager and check for a hardware-enumeration or USB-device error.
A different cable can solve a detection problem, but it cannot repair or convert an Xbox partition layout. Similarly, Windows already includes the tools and storage drivers required to format a working drive; a driver-updater utility is not necessary for the normal procedure.
When a driver utility might be relevant
Only consider USB storage driver troubleshooting as a secondary diagnostic path if the drive is healthy, the cable, port, power, and hub have been checked, the drive fails to enumerate in Windows, and Device Manager suggests a driver problem. Do not use third-party software as a substitute for identifying the correct disk or as a requirement for formatting. Any utility should be independently reviewed and obtained from its official source.
If Device Manager suggests a driver issue after these checks, Outbyte Driver Updater is an optional diagnostic path; it is not required for formatting.
If formatting fails
Formatting errors can result from a bad cable, insufficient power, a failing disk, a read-only state, a damaged partition table, or another process using the volume. Try a different direct USB port and a known-good compatible cable, then inspect the disk’s status again in Disk Management.
Recommended Free Tools
Stop repeated format attempts if the drive:
- makes clicking, grinding, or repeated spin-up sounds;
- disconnects and reconnects by itself;
- reports I/O or CRC errors;
- becomes unusually hot; or
- contains data that has not been backed up.
Those symptoms can indicate hardware failure. If the data matters, disconnect the drive and consider professional recovery rather than repeatedly writing to it.

Select the external drive and choose the option to format it for Games & Apps. Read the console’s warning carefully: this step removes the Windows file system and any files stored on it. The drive must meet the console’s applicable USB and capacity requirements; the original Xbox One documentation used USB 3.0 and at least 256 GB for Games & Apps storage.
Quick decision checklist
- Want Windows-only storage? Back up the drive, then format it as NTFS.
- Need to move it among Windows and other exFAT-capable devices? Format it as exFAT.
- Want to keep Xbox games and apps on it? Do not format it on the PC.
- See unallocated space? Use New Simple Volume, then format the new volume.
- Windows cannot see the disk at all? Check the port, cable, power, hub, another PC, and Device Manager before considering software troubleshooting.
- Formatted the wrong disk? Disconnect it immediately and avoid installing recovery software or saving files to it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use an Xbox One external hard drive on a PC?
Yes, but not without changing its file-system layout. Back up anything important, then format the intended volume in Windows Disk Management as NTFS or exFAT. This erases the Xbox Games & Apps setup.
Should I format the drive as NTFS or exFAT?
Use NTFS when the drive will mainly remain connected to Windows PCs. Use exFAT when you need to move large files among Windows and other devices that support exFAT. Neither file system preserves Xbox Games & Apps functionality.
Can the same external drive work for Xbox One games and Windows files?
No. Xbox Games & Apps storage is formatted and managed by the console. If you format the drive for Windows, Xbox One will need to format it again before you can use it for Games & Apps.
What should I do if I formatted the wrong external drive?
Stop using and disconnect the drive immediately. Do not install recovery software on it or save recovered files back to it. Recovery may be possible, but it is not guaranteed; use another storage device or a professional recovery service for important data.
The Bottom Line
To repurpose an Xbox One external drive for Windows, back up its contents, identify it in Disk Management, and replace the Xbox layout with NTFS or exFAT. NTFS is the practical Windows-only default; exFAT is better when supported non-Windows devices also need access. The conversion erases the Xbox setup, so the console must format the drive again before it can store Xbox Games & Apps.
