Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The safest way to make room is to use Call of Duty’s own file manager: open the game, choose Menu > Manage Files, and uninstall only the titles, campaigns, multiplayer packs, Zombies content, Warzone files, or other components you no longer need. Then check the install screen for your exact game and platform, because Call of Duty has no universal size. If you are still short, remove other unused large files or add storage that your device can actually use for the game.
Start with the exact game, edition and platform
Storage requirements depend on more than the words “Call of Duty.” The current title, edition, installed Call of Duty experience, selected modes, language packs, platform and update state all affect the number shown by your device. A PC installation, a PlayStation installation and an Xbox installation can present different pack choices and different free-space requirements.

What the published numbers do—and do not—tell you
One official example shows why a single “Call of Duty size” is misleading. The official PC requirements for Black Ops 6 list an SSD with 149 GB available space at launch. The same requirement lists 78 GB when Call of Duty HQ and Warzone are already installed. Those figures apply to that title, that PC requirement page and those stated conditions; they are not a promise for every Call of Duty game, platform, update or collection of modes.
Xbox’s launcher listing for Black Ops 6 also warns that additional storage space may be required for mandatory game updates. It does not establish a universal extra-space number. Treat the live install prompt as the final check and leave practical capacity beyond the advertised download rather than assuming the displayed download size is all that will be needed.
| Figure or warning | Scope | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 149 GB available at launch | Official PC requirement for Black Ops 6 | Use only as a reference for that PC configuration. |
| 78 GB with COD HQ and Warzone already installed | Same PC requirement, with the stated existing-install condition | Do not apply it to a clean install or another platform. |
| Additional space may be required for mandatory updates | Xbox launcher warning | Check the current prompt and avoid filling the drive to the exact download figure. |
Use Call of Duty’s Manage Files screen first
Activision’s content-management guidance is designed to remove Call of Duty content without deleting the whole installation. Its file manager gives you control over what is downloaded and stored, and Activision recommends the in-game system when uninstalling full games or game modes.
Open the manager
- Launch Call of Duty and wait for the main menu to load.
- Open Menu.
- Choose Manage Files.
- Review the installed games, modes and content packs listed for your account and platform.
Remove only content you do not need
- Select the title or pack you want to change.
- Choose the uninstall or remove option shown by the manager.
- Read the confirmation screen. Check that you are removing a mode or pack, not the entire Call of Duty installation, if you intend to keep the launcher.
- Confirm the removal and wait for the process to finish before starting another install.
Pack names vary by title and platform. You may see campaign, multiplayer, Zombies, Warzone, co-op, language or texture-related entries, but do not assume every game offers the same list. Manage Files is the place to identify what is installed in your particular setup.
Check the result outside the menu
After uninstalling, reopen Manage Files and then check the platform’s storage or installation screen. Confirm that the available-space figure increased and that the target game still has the modes you intend to play. If the number has not changed, allow the platform to finish pending deletion work, restart the game or console, and check the drive again before deleting something else.

Choose content during a first-time installation
If you have not installed the game yet, use the installer’s content choices instead of accepting every optional component. Activision’s current support guidance directs new installers to select specific content. Depending on the title, that can mean installing a campaign, multiplayer, Zombies, Warzone or another pack separately.
A practical selection order
- Read the install screen for the title and platform, including any “required” label.
- Keep the base files and the mode you will play first.
- Clear optional modes you do not plan to use immediately.
- Review language, high-resolution and other optional packs individually.
- Note the final required-space figure after your selections, not the figure shown for the complete bundle.
Do not rely on older advice that treats the entire Call of Duty library as one mandatory download. Activision’s newer guidance emphasizes selecting specific content for new games, so the choices presented by your current installer are more useful than an aggregate figure from a previous release.

How much free space should you leave?
There is no responsibly universal buffer in gigabytes. The Xbox listing’s warning about mandatory updates means an installation that fits exactly may fail when an update is required. Leave additional capacity that is comfortable for your drive, then verify the live prompt before pressing Install. The amount you need depends on the title, patch, platform and the content you selected.
Use this sequence:
- Record the platform’s current available-space number.
- Record the required-space number after selecting only the desired content.
- Keep a margin beyond that requirement for mandatory updates and any other work the platform requests.
- Start the installation only when the prompt confirms enough space.
Never convert the 149 GB Black Ops 6 PC figure into a rule such as “every Call of Duty needs 149 GB.” It is a title-specific launch requirement, and the 78 GB figure assumes COD HQ and Warzone are already present.
What to uninstall when Call of Duty content is not enough
If Manage Files cannot reclaim enough room, move outward in order of reversibility. Removing a downloadable mode is usually easier to undo than deleting personal files, provided you have the required account access and a reliable connection to download the mode again.

| Uninstall an unused Call of Duty mode or pack | Varies by title and pack | Usually reinstallable; requires another download | Confirm the pack is not needed for a mode you play. |
| Remove another large, finished game | Often substantial | Usually reinstallable; save-data handling varies | Check that saves are synchronized or backed up. |
| Delete captured videos or screenshots | Varies with recording length and resolution | Not reversible unless copied elsewhere | Export anything you want to keep first. |
| Remove unused applications or downloaded media | Varies | Re-download may be possible; personal files can be permanent | Verify ownership, backups and whether another user needs the files. |
Use your platform’s normal storage-management screen for these actions. Do not manually delete folders inside a Call of Duty installation and do not use an unverified “cleaner” to guess which files are safe. Manual deletion can leave an incomplete installation or remove files shared by another mode.

Streaming settings are not a replacement for uninstalling content
Call of Duty’s On-Demand High-Quality Streaming setting has a bandwidth and image-quality trade-off. Activision describes Optimized as higher-fidelity streaming that uses more internet bandwidth, while Minimal reduces graphical quality and uses less bandwidth.
Changing that setting can make sense on a restricted connection, but it is not a measured way to reclaim a known amount of local disk space. Do not treat Minimal as equivalent to uninstalling a campaign or multiplayer pack. Use Manage Files when your objective is to reduce the installation stored on the drive; use the streaming setting when your objective is to control network use and visual quality.
When a storage upgrade is the right fallback
An upgrade becomes reasonable when you have removed unwanted Call of Duty content and other safe-to-delete files, but the required installation still does not fit. For PC, the Black Ops 6 requirement specifically calls for an SSD, so a compatible SSD is a legitimate path. Compatibility must be checked before purchase.
Verify the drive and device
- Form factor: confirm that the physical size fits the PC or expansion bay.
- Interface: match the supported connection, such as the slot or protocol specified by the computer.
- Capacity: account for the operating system, existing games and update headroom, not just the one install.
- Platform support: check the console model’s approved expansion options and capacity limits.
- Install destination: confirm that the game can run from that drive, rather than merely being stored or moved there.
A generic external USB drive is not a universal solution for every current-generation console game. Some devices can store or move games on external storage while requiring an internal or approved expansion drive to run particular titles. Check the specifications for your exact console and game before treating an accessory as an installation fix.

Plan the migration
- Check the device manufacturer’s storage specifications.
- Confirm whether the drive is intended for installing and running the title or only for archival storage.
- Install or attach the drive according to the platform’s instructions.
- Set it as the installation destination if the platform offers that choice.
- Recheck the Call of Duty installer’s available-space figure before downloading.
Platform-specific checks
Windows PC
Use the game’s Manage Files screen first, then verify the destination drive’s free space in the launcher or Windows storage view. For a Black Ops 6 PC installation, remember that the published 149 GB requirement is for launch conditions and that 78 GB applies only when COD HQ and Warzone are already installed. If you add an SSD, make sure the game launcher recognizes it and that it is an SSD suitable for the title’s requirement.
PlayStation
Use the Call of Duty content manager for mode-level removal, then confirm free space in the console’s storage settings. The pack names and available choices can differ between PlayStation generations and titles. Do not assume that a pack listed in a PC guide exists on your console.
Xbox
Use Manage Files for Call of Duty content, and also read the Xbox installation prompt because the launcher warns that mandatory updates may require additional storage. Xbox storage expansion rules differ by model, so verify whether a proposed drive can run the title or only hold it for transfer.
Why old cleanup advice can be wrong
Call of Duty’s installed structure changes over time. Activision’s Modern Warfare II setup information records that older files within the Call of Duty experience were scheduled for automatic removal on August 7, 2025, and that Modern Warfare II moved outside the Call of Duty experience as a standalone title. That is historical context, not a future cleanup instruction. A current installation may therefore look different from screenshots or folder lists published before that change.
For the same reason, avoid deleting files based on a past launcher layout, an old combined-size estimate or a video made for another platform. The current Manage Files list and your platform’s live storage prompt identify what your installation actually uses.

Troubleshoot a failed or incomplete installation
The installer still says there is not enough space
- Return to Manage Files and verify that the selected mode or pack was actually removed.
- Check the destination drive, not a different drive that has more free space.
- Reopen the platform storage view after a restart so it refreshes the available-space figure.
- Review the selected content again; an optional pack may have been reselected by the installer.
- Leave more capacity than the displayed download because mandatory updates can require additional storage.
A mode disappeared after cleanup
Open Manage Files and identify the missing mode. If it is listed as uninstalled, select it for installation again. Reinstalling requires the available space and download time for that pack, so remove only content you are prepared to download later.
The game launches but requests another download
Let the title complete its required content installation, then check Manage Files for optional packs. A base launcher or one mode does not prove that every campaign, multiplayer or Zombies component is installed.
The drive has room, but the game cannot use it
Check the install destination and the device’s supported drive types. A drive can have free capacity yet be unsuitable for running the title, unsupported by the console, formatted incorrectly for the platform or assigned only as removable storage. Follow the platform’s storage requirements rather than forcing a manual folder move.

- Identify the exact Call of Duty title, edition and platform.
- Read the current installation prompt and note the selected-content requirement.
- Launch Call of Duty and open Menu > Manage Files.
- Uninstall unused modes or packs from the in-game manager.
- For a new installation, select only the content you intend to play.
- Recheck available space in the game and platform storage screens.
- Leave practical capacity for mandatory updates; no universal buffer is established.
- Remove other large games or personal files only after checking saves and backups.
- Do not manually delete Call of Duty folders or use third-party cleaners.
- If space is still insufficient, verify a compatible SSD or approved console expansion and whether the game can run from it.
- Start the install only when the live prompt confirms enough space.
The bottom line
Begin inside Call of Duty, not in a file browser: Menu > Manage Files lets you remove unused modes and select only the content you want. Confirm the requirement shown for your exact platform and title, because figures such as Black Ops 6’s 149 GB PC launch requirement—or 78 GB with COD HQ and Warzone already installed—are configuration-specific. Keep room for mandatory updates, and treat a compatible SSD or approved expansion as a conditional fallback after safer cleanup is exhausted.
