Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →First check which drive or console storage the game will use, then remove or move only files and games you recognize. Try the platform’s built-in storage tools before buying more space: cleanup steps differ on Windows, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Steam, and external storage does not work the same way on every system.
1. Check which storage is full
Before deleting anything, confirm the game’s install destination. A computer may have several drives, and a console may distinguish internal storage from an expansion device. Clearing space somewhere else will not help if the installer is targeting a different location.
Windows
Open File Explorer and select This PC to see available space on each drive. For a breakdown of what is using space, open Settings > System > Storage and review the categories and drives. Microsoft’s guides cover checking Windows storage and drives and freeing drive space.
Consoles
Open the console’s storage or data-management screen and identify the location where the game will be installed. Use that system’s own labels and instructions: installed games, captures, and save data may be managed differently across platforms.

2. Find space you can safely reclaim
Windows: inspect large personal files
Check folders such as Downloads, Videos, Pictures, and Music, sorting by size if that makes review easier. Delete files only when you recognize them and no longer need them. If you want to keep a file, move it to another drive or supported external storage instead.
After deleting files, empty the Recycle Bin to release the space. Windows Storage Sense and Cleanup recommendations can help, but review the selected categories before confirming a cleanup. In particular, removing Windows.old removes the option to return to the previous Windows version, Microsoft warns.

PlayStation 5: review installed games and media
Use the PS5 storage-management screen to review what is installed and what you are willing to remove. PlayStation’s storage guide explains the available storage options. If you delete a game, you may need to download or install it again before playing; do not treat game files, captures, and saves as interchangeable categories.
Nintendo Switch: archive or delete downloadable software
Nintendo documents archiving or deleting downloaded software as ways to free space without affecting save data. Follow the console’s prompts and check the data category before removing anything. See Nintendo’s instructions for managing downloadable software and its data-management FAQ. Switch-family storage details and card compatibility depend on the specific console generation.

Steam: manage installed games and library locations
Steam’s Storage Manager can help manage game installations and their locations. Open Steam’s storage management controls to review the libraries and installed games rather than deleting unfamiliar folders manually. Steam’s support article addresses games appearing uninstalled or downloads resetting, including external-drive cautions in that context; it is not a universal rule for every Steam setup.
3. Retry the installation and check space again
After each meaningful cleanup or move, check the available space on the intended destination, then retry or resume the install. Follow the current store listing or install prompt for that game’s requirements and let the platform report whether it needs more room. The official sources here do not establish a universal free-space buffer or multiplier for large games.

4. Add storage only if cleanup is not enough
Expansion can help, but compatibility and whether games can be played directly from a device depend on the platform. Confirm your exact model and intended use before buying storage.
| Platform | Storage option | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | External storage for personal files | Useful for moving files you want to keep off the game’s install drive. Verify the drive and connection suit your computer and intended use. |
| PS5 | USB extended storage | Can store PS5 game data, but a PS5 game must be moved back to console storage or an M.2 SSD to play. |
| PS5 | Compatible M.2 SSD | Can provide internal expansion, subject to PS5 compatibility requirements. A 2026 Sony safety guide for the referenced model family lists supported capacities of 250 GB–4 TB; check the current guide for your exact console before purchase. |
| Nintendo Switch family | Compatible microSD card | Additional storage needs depend on existing free space and the games you use. Confirm card compatibility for your exact console generation; do not assume Switch and Switch 2 requirements are identical. |
Sony’s PS5 storage guidance and safety guide for the referenced model family are the right starting points for checking expansion details. Nintendo’s data-management guidance covers its console family, but verify the specifications for your own generation. Avoid buying a drive based only on capacity: platform compatibility and whether it is for archiving, file movement, or playing games matter just as much.
