How to Free Up Storage Space on Nintendo Switch When a Game Demo Won’t Download

By VGSources Team 8 min read

If a Nintendo Switch game demo will not download because there is not enough space, archive games you are not currently playing. On the console, open System Settings > Data Management, then use Manage Software for one title or Quick Archive for several. Archiving removes the installed software data but keeps the game’s HOME Menu icon and save data, so you can download the title again later.

Check the demo’s Nintendo eShop listing after each cleanup because storage requirements differ by game. If archiving is not enough, a compatible microSD card can expand storage for software, updates, downloadable content (DLC), and screenshots. Your save data remains in the console’s system memory.

What the “not enough space” message means

Nintendo Switch storage is used by installed games, demos, updates, DLC, screenshots, and other downloadable software. A demo can fail before or during download when the console does not have enough available storage for that particular title. There is no single storage requirement that applies to every demo, so the figure shown on that demo’s Nintendo eShop page is the one to use.

The Nintendo Switch family covered here includes the original Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED Model. Nintendo Switch 2 uses different storage guidance and a different card format, so do not apply these instructions to that system.

SANDISK 256GB microSD Card, Super Mario Super Star Edition | Officially Licensed for Nintendo Switch, UHS-I, Up to 100MB/s Read Speeds
  • Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
  • Incredible speeds in a microSD card officially licensed for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo OLED, and Nintendo Switch Lite systems
  • Spend less time waiting and more time playing with read speeds up to 100MB/s(1) and write speeds up to 90MB/s(1).
  • Instantly add up to 256GB (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
  • Store your downloaded games, screenshots and video captures in 1 place so you can travel light.

The safest first step is archiving. Nintendo describes archiving as a way to remove installed software data without affecting the associated save data. It is different from deleting save data, which can remove your progress.

First, check how much space the demo needs

  1. Open the demo’s listing in the Nintendo eShop.
  2. Read the storage requirement shown for that specific demo.
  3. On the HOME Menu, open System Settings, select Data Management, and review the available space shown for the console’s storage locations.

Do not assume that freeing a small amount will be enough. The amount required varies by game, and the exact free-space margin needed can depend on the title and the console’s software. If the available space is still below the demo’s stated requirement, archive additional software or use compatible expanded storage.

Archive one game or demo with Manage Software

Use this route when you know which installed title you no longer need immediately. Archiving is reversible: the software is removed from installed storage, while its HOME Menu icon and save data remain.

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select Data Management.
  3. Choose Manage Software.
  4. Select the installed downloadable game or demo you want to remove from storage.
  5. Choose Archive Software.
  6. Confirm by selecting Archive.

After confirmation, the title’s installed software data is removed and the recovered space becomes available for another download. The HOME Menu icon remains, making the title easy to find later. Nintendo’s support guidance states that archiving software does not affect save data.

  • EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].

Depending on the system menu version, an equivalent archive command may also be available from the selected game’s HOME Menu options. If the labels differ slightly, use the option that explicitly says Archive Software, not an option that deletes save data.

Archive several titles with Quick Archive

Quick Archive is faster when multiple large or unused titles are consuming space.

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select Data Management.
  3. Choose Quick Archive.
  4. Select each title you want to archive.
  5. Choose Archive Data.
  6. Confirm by selecting Archive.

Quick Archive lets you select multiple software titles in one operation. Select games you are comfortable downloading again later, and leave frequently played titles installed if you want to avoid a later redownload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nintendo notes that some data-management features require a system update. If Quick Archive or another menu item is missing, install any available system update, restart the console if prompted, and check System Settings > Data Management again. Menu wording can vary by software version.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

What archiving removes—and what it keeps

Action Installed software Save data HOME Menu icon Can you download the software again?
Archive Software Removed to free storage Preserved Kept Yes, from the icon or the title’s eShop page
Quick Archive Removed for each selected title Preserved Kept Yes, for each archived title
Delete save data Does not serve as the routine software-cleanup method May be removed, along with progress Not the relevant storage-preservation choice Redownloading software does not restore deleted progress
Compatible microSD card Provides additional storage for software data, updates, and DLC Remains in console system memory Not applicable Software stored on the card remains available while the card is inserted

The key distinction is between software data and save data. Archiving removes the former. Save data is separate and stays in system memory; it is not moved to the microSD card by archiving.

Redownload an archived title later

Archiving is intended for software you may want to use again. Once the demo or game is archived, its HOME Menu icon remains. Select that icon and follow the on-screen download prompt while the console is connected to the internet. You can also open the title’s Nintendo eShop listing and start the download there.

Redownloading requires enough free space at that time. If the console is full again, archive another title before starting the redownload. Your save data remains separate from the archived software, so restoring the software does not require deleting or recreating your progress.

When a microSD card is the better solution

Archiving is the no-cost first step. A compatible microSD card is the optional expansion route when you regularly install downloadable games, demos, updates, and DLC and do not want to keep archiving and redownloading them.

On Nintendo Switch, a compatible microSD card can store:

  • Downloadable game and demo software data
  • Game updates
  • Downloadable content
  • Screenshots

Save data remains in the console’s system memory. A microSD card does not move save data off the console, and Nintendo’s data-management guidance says save data cannot be saved or copied to the card. This means a card expands room for software but is not a backup location for game progress.

Check compatibility before buying or inserting a card

  • Confirm that the listing identifies the card as compatible with your Nintendo Switch model.
  • Choose capacity based on the size of the software library you plan to keep installed, not just the single demo you are trying to download.
  • Check the console model and the card requirements on the product listing before purchase. The original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED Model are the systems addressed by this guide; Switch 2 has different storage guidance and card requirements.

No universal capacity, price, brand, or merchant recommendation is established for this issue. The right capacity depends on your planned library, and compatibility should be verified for your particular model.

A practical cleanup order that avoids lost progress

  1. Identify the requirement. Read the demo’s eShop listing so you know the target amount of storage.
  2. Open Data Management. Use System Settings > Data Management rather than deleting save data.
  3. Archive one clearly unused title. Use Manage Software and confirm Archive Software.
  4. Recheck available space. Compare it with the demo’s listed requirement.
  5. Use Quick Archive if necessary. Select several games you do not need installed immediately and confirm Archive Data, then Archive.
  6. Try the demo download again. Return to its eShop listing after enough space is available.
  7. Consider a microSD card for recurring shortages. Use one that is listed as compatible with your Switch model, remembering that save data remains in system memory.

Do not delete save data as a routine space-saving step

Deleting save data is not equivalent to archiving software. Save data contains progress and is stored separately in the console’s system memory. Removing it can erase the progress associated with a game, and a later software redownload does not recreate deleted progress.

If your goal is simply to make room for a demo, use Archive Software or Quick Archive. Choose a title you can redownload later, and keep its save data intact.

If the demo still will not download

The console still reports insufficient space

Archive additional titles, then check the available space again. One archived game may not provide enough room because the demo’s requirement varies by title. Use the amount shown on the specific eShop listing as your reference.

Quick Archive is not shown

Some management features require a system update, and menu wording can differ by software version. Check for a system update, then return to System Settings > Data Management. You can still archive a single title through Manage Software if that option is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot find the title after archiving

Archiving keeps the HOME Menu icon. Look through the HOME Menu for the title and select it to begin a redownload, or locate the same listing in the Nintendo eShop. If the icon was removed by a different action, find the title through the eShop account and redownload it there.

You expected a microSD card to hold save data

That is not how Nintendo Switch storage is divided. The card can hold software data, updates, DLC, and screenshots, while save data remains in system memory and cannot be saved or copied to the card.

You are using a Nintendo Switch 2

Stop and consult Switch 2-specific storage guidance. The instructions and card format for Switch 2 differ from those for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED Model.

How to prevent the same problem with future demos

  • Check the eShop storage requirement before starting a large download.
  • Keep a short list of games you can archive quickly if the console approaches its limit.
  • Use Quick Archive when several rarely played titles are installed.
  • Use a compatible microSD card if you routinely keep downloadable software, updates, DLC, and screenshots on the console.
  • Do not treat the microSD card as a save-data backup; progress remains in system memory.
  • Keep the console’s system software current so data-management features and menu labels match the available version.

Which option should you choose?

Your situation Best next step Why
You need room for one demo and have unused games installed Use Manage Software > Archive Software It is free, targeted, and preserves save data.
You need room and several titles are rarely played Use Quick Archive You can select multiple titles in one cleanup.
You frequently run out of room for downloadable software Use a compatible microSD card It expands storage for software data, updates, DLC, and screenshots.
You are considering deleting save data Do not use that as routine cleanup Save data is separate from software and deleting it can remove progress.
You have a Switch 2 Use Switch 2-specific instructions Its storage guidance and card format differ from the systems covered here.

The safest answer in one sentence

Archive unused software through System Settings > Data Management, verify the demo’s own eShop storage requirement, and add a compatible microSD card only if you need ongoing space for software—never delete save data just to make room.
