For the fullest star-based completion in Super Mario Galaxy, collect all 121 Power Stars as Mario, then all 121 as Luigi. You’ll need to reach 120 stars with each character and clear the Grand Finale Galaxy’s Star Festival with both. That makes 242 character-specific star records in total.
What counts as 100% in Super Mario Galaxy?
The game’s sources do not define a single official “100%” percentage. Here, 100% means collecting every Power Star in both character campaigns, including each character’s postgame Grand Finale star. A narrower target, such as finishing Mario’s 120-star campaign, is not the same endpoint.
| Completion target | What it involves |
|---|---|
| Finish the story | Complete the main route and defeat Bowser. |
| Unlock Luigi | Collect 120 stars as Mario, then defeat Bowser. |
| Complete one character’s campaign | Collect 120 stars, then the 121st star in Grand Finale Galaxy. |
| Full star-based completion | Collect 121 stars as Mario and 121 as Luigi: 242 character-specific star records. |
How to track missing stars
Use the Star List as your cleanup ledger rather than relying only on the overall star count. The original game manual says the Universe Map shows how many Power Stars have been found in each galaxy, and directs players to select the Star List from the Map screen: Nintendo game manual. Check the list for each galaxy and special area represented there, then revisit entries that are not complete.
How to get all 121 stars as Mario
Clear the regular missions and special entries
Work through the normal missions and use the Star List to find anything still missing. The special categories to look for include comet missions, Luigi missions, Hungry Luma galaxies, and the green-star Trial Galaxies. Check each galaxy and special area shown by your own Star List; this guide does not provide a verified location-by-location checklist.

Reach 120 stars and defeat Bowser
Collect 120 Power Stars as Mario, then defeat Bowser to unlock Luigi. The 120-star mark is a gate to the second character’s campaign, not the broadest completion endpoint.
Collect Mario’s final star
Once both characters have reached 120 stars, the Grand Finale Galaxy becomes available from the Planet of Trials. Complete its mission, The Star Festival, as Mario to earn his 121st star.

How to get all 121 stars as Luigi
Repeat the Star List audit
Play Luigi’s separate campaign and collect 120 stars. As with Mario, check the Star List across regular missions and special entries instead of assuming that a high overall count means every category is complete.
Clear the Grand Finale as Luigi
After Luigi has 120 stars, return to Grand Finale Galaxy and complete The Star Festival with him. This earns Luigi’s 121st star and brings the two-character total to 242.

Don’t confuse this game with Super Mario Galaxy 2
The green-star cleanup often associated with Super Mario Galaxy 2 is not the target here. In the original Super Mario Galaxy, the relevant green-star content is associated with three Green Power Stars and the Trial Galaxies; it is not the sequel’s separate Green Star campaign.
Does the route change by edition?
Nintendo’s US store listing gives Super Mario Galaxy for Nintendo Switch an October 2, 2025 release date. Nintendo describes enhanced resolution, an improved UI, extra Storybook Chapters, and Assist Mode for that release; it also says Switch 2 supports 4K output with a free update. The listing does not give a star-by-star comparison with the Wii or Super Mario 3D All-Stars editions. The route above follows the established star structure; use the Star List in your own game to verify what remains in your edition. Nintendo Switch product listing.
