Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo earn three stars in a single-player Grand Prix cup in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, aim for 60 points: the cited Prima Games guide lists 15 points for first place in each of the cup’s four races, so the reliable target is four wins. Nintendo’s official manual confirms that Grand Prix standings combine all four races and that results include a rating of up to three stars, but it does not give the numeric cutoff; the 60-point threshold comes from Prima Games.
How the three-star target works
A Grand Prix cup contains four races, and your finishing positions contribute points to one cup total. The Prima Games guide lists 60 points as the three-star result and awards 15 points for first place in a race. Four first-place finishes therefore produce a perfect 60-point cup.

Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 Instruction Booklet explains that points from the four races determine the final Grand Prix standings. It also distinguishes the driving-technique rating from the trophy: a trophy is awarded for finishing in the overall top three, while the star rating measures your driving technique. Finishing in the top three overall does not by itself mean you earned three stars.

Defend your lead instead of taking unnecessary risks
When you are near the front, expect incoming items. The Prima Games tips recommend holding a defensive item behind your kart when possible. This can help protect you, but it is not a guarantee against every hit; prioritize staying on a clean racing line over risky maneuvers to avoid an attack.
#1 Best Overall
- Hit the road with the definitive version of Mario Kart 8 and play anytime, anywhere! Race your friends or battle them in a revised battle mode on new and returning battle courses
- Play locally in up to 4-player multiplayer in 1080p while playing in TV Mode. Every track from the Wii U version, including DLC, makes a glorious return
- Plus, the Inklings appear as all-new guest characters, along with returning favorites, such as King Boo, Dry Bones, and Bowser Jr.
- Players can choose a new Smart Steering feature which makes driving and staying on the track easy for novice players and kids even at 200cc
Collect coins along your route
Pick up coins when they are on or close to your racing line rather than making a costly detour. Nintendo’s manual says coins increase speed up to a maximum of 10, and notes that getting knocked over or spinning out can make you drop coins. A safer route is usually more valuable than a coin pickup that sends you off course.
Use shortcuts only when the boost and route make sense
Learn alternate routes on each course. A Mushroom can help you cut across suitable off-road sections; without a boost, off-road terrain can slow you down. Try shortcuts that save meaningful distance, but avoid unfamiliar cuts that risk a fall, a collision, or lost time.

- Inclusi n de circuitos in ditos en el modo batalla
- Los pilotos cuentan con el volante inteligente, que ayuda a no salirse de la pista
- Hasta 8 pilotos en partidas de multijugador local
Choose a manageable speed class while learning
The cited guide lists 50cc, 100cc, 150cc, Mirror Mode, and 200cc. It describes 50cc as the slowest class, with higher classes bringing greater speed and more aggressive computer racers. Practicing a course at a lower class can make it easier to learn its turns and routes before trying faster races; that is a practice recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular class changes the star threshold.
A practical plan for a three-star cup
- Pick a cup and class you can handle. If you are learning the tracks, begin with a slower class and focus on consistent lines and course knowledge.
- Learn the four courses. Identify difficult turns, useful alternate routes, and off-road cuts that can be taken safely with a Mushroom.
- Race for first in every round. The Prima Games point table makes four first-place finishes the straightforward route to the 60-point target.
- Protect the advantage once you lead. Keep defensive items behind you when possible, collect coins without detours, and favor a clean route over a risky shortcut.
- Check the Grand Prix results screen. The cup result aggregates all four races, and the star rating is shown separately from the trophy awarded for an overall top-three finish.
Does the latest update change the star requirement?
Nintendo Support lists Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Ver. 4.0.0 as released September 1, 2026. Its listed changes include Switch 2 display support, shorter loading, multiplayer changes, and a race-speed increase equivalent to one coin. The update notes do not say that Grand Prix star thresholds changed, so the available information does not establish a different requirement from the 60-point target reported by Prima Games.

The numeric threshold is attributed to the Prima Games guide; Nintendo’s manual corroborates the four-race scoring structure and the existence of the three-star rating. The manual is for the Wii U version of Mario Kart 8, so it supports those foundational mechanics rather than serving as a Deluxe-specific source for the 60-point cutoff.
