You don’t need an amiibo to invite a regular campsite visitor in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Talk with the visitor and keep going through the interaction; for a later random camper, Nookipedia says you can invite them after winning the game they offer. The first campsite visitor is different: Nookipedia says that visitor must move in as part of island progression.
How to invite a regular campsite visitor without amiibo
- Talk to the camper. Keep interacting and take part in the game they offer.
- Win the game. According to Nookipedia’s moving guide, winning makes the invitation available for a later random campsite visitor.
- Continue the move-in conversation. If the camper agrees to consider moving, what happens next depends on whether your island has a vacant house plot or already has ten animal residents.
Nintendo describes the campsite as a way to meet visitors, help them with tasks and potentially persuade them to move to the island. The invitation details above come from Nookipedia, a community-maintained reference; Nintendo’s official game page confirms the broader campsite-recruitment feature.
What happens if your island is full?
When your island has ten animal residents, a standard random campsite visitor may name a current resident to replace. Nookipedia says you can accept or reject that proposal, but the camper may choose the resident at random; you should not expect to select the replacement yourself.
Is the first campsite visitor different?
Yes. The initial campsite visitor is a progression case, not the recurring random-camper route. Nookipedia says the first visitor moves in, so treat that encounter differently from later visitors who appear at the campsite.

Other ways to find a villager
If you have an open house plot, you can pursue other routes instead of waiting for a random camper. Nookipedia lists Mystery Tours, where each visit offers a randomly chosen villager, and inviting a villager who is moving out from another player’s island.
| Route | What you need to know |
|---|---|
| Random campsite visitor | You do not choose who appears. A later visitor can be invited after you win their game; with ten residents, they may propose a random resident to replace. |
| Mystery Tour | Requires an open house plot; each tour offers a randomly chosen villager. |
| Another player’s island | Requires an open house plot and a villager who is moving out on that player’s island. |
| Amiibo | An optional route for inviting a chosen eligible character. Nintendo Support says repeated campsite visits and continued interaction are needed for the character to move in. |
Which characters can move in?
These steps apply to eligible animal villagers, not every character in the game. Nintendo Support says special NPCs, including characters associated with Series 5 amiibo cards, cannot be invited to the campsite or live on the island; regular NPCs can be invited to the campsite.
